Bullet Journal Method Overview

  • A simple practice to stay organized and focus on what matters
  • Requires only four categories: Notes, Actions, Moods, Events

Ryder's Personal Experience

  • Grew up with ADHD
  • Found naming experiences helpful through writing
  • Developed a method to distill experiences into four categories

The Four Categories

1. Notes

  • Symbol: Dash (-)
  • Captures thoughts, facts, dates, insights, observations
  • Keep sentences short and clear
  • Write notes as if for a stranger to future-proof them

2. Actions

  • Symbol: Dot ()
  • Captures actions rather than tasks to feel empowering
  • Dot is quick to draw and flexible (e.g., migrate, complete)
  • Different symbols for different states:
    • Single arrow for migration
    • Double arrows for external migration
    • Line for irrelevance
    • X for completion

3. Moods

  • Symbol: Equal sign (=)
  • Connects with body feelings (emotional and physical)
  • Record entries in one sentence to observe without judgment
  • Helps identify what's working in life through awareness

4. Events

  • Symbol: Open circle (o)
  • Captures things happening externally
  • Keep sentences short and objective
  • Observing without judgment is a key skill

Implementing the Method

  • Use categories as needed throughout the day
  • Mix and match for context
  • "Rapid logging": quick capture of thoughts, actions, feelings, experiences
