Hi everyone, thank you for coming to the Bayou 181 lab. So this is the first lab we are going to do prior to the 19 other labs. Right, so first lab is the laboratory safety.
So you must be aware what is the rule you need to follow to do all the fun and really exciting 19 labs in the future. Right, so if you are not aware of the lab safety rules, then it's very easy to hurt yourself. So that's why you need to know what is the rule you need to keep during the while you are conducting the lab, right? So you know like during the lab we are using the chemicals which is the explosive chemicals like hydrochloride, where we are using the bio like a fire hazard the chemicals like alcohol.
And also we are using the knives, we are using the hot plate, and we're using the glass, right? So You know, like if you don't know what is the rule and how to handle it and how to do if something has happened, which is a lab safety rule, then you're going to hurt yourself. So that's why to reduce the possibility, I mean, to protect you, you must be aware of what is the rule for doing the lab.
And also this lab safety is applied for all the other classes like human physiology, microbiology, and chemistry lab. After you take the Bio 181, you are going to take another higher level of the class. And that class, if they have labs, they also use all these same rules of the laboratory safety lab you are going to learn today. Okay, so all the lab safety must become your habit, right? So you must become a habit of you must have a lab safety habit.
So before you come to the class to do the lab, you must check yourself if your your all the outfit is ready for doing the lab or not. So everything must become a habit or the safety must become a habit. So number one, so following the following rules of the laboratory safety should become a habit. So why? because to prevent the possible hazardous to eyes or contact lens or wear, so you need to wear the goggles or glasses.
So, you know, like in the Bayou 181 lab, we don't use the large of like hazardous chemicals, but sometimes we are using like hydrochloride, sodium hydroxide, it's not bad, but alcohol, that kind of things. So if we are using the hazardous chemicals, or dangerous chemical, the instructor will ask you to wear the goggles. In that case, you must wear the goggles to protect your eyes. And the second one, you must assume that all the reagents you're using in the lab is poisonous or harm you, right?
So you shouldn't eat, you shouldn't inhale, or you shouldn't taste it, right? Anything. All the chemicals we are using, you assume that that is that can make you sick, right?
So if your chemicals get into your body, right? You must wash it immediately so that if the chemical touch your skin, if you inhale your chemicals or like swallow your chemicals, you must clean it out or everything out, right? So you need to clean it right after you contact it. So that is the habit. So what you shouldn't do during the lab, so first things you cannot do, do not ingest any reagent.
You cannot ingest any reagent during the labs. Do not eat, drink, do not eat, do not drink, do not smoke during the lab. So you know like if you have food or if you have water, you must leave everything outside of the class and then you could come into the class.
So you shouldn't eat, you shouldn't drink. If you are found that you are drinking and you are eating in the class, maybe that's possible that you are asking to leave the class and then you finish outside and you maybe you could come back right so anyway the bottom line is all the food or the drink you it should be stay outside of the class right okay so do not wear the open toe shoe right so you know like in arizona it's very hot so a lot of students wear the open toe shoe but not in the lab in the uh the during the laboratory you shouldn't you are not allowed to wear the open toe shoe If the instructor finds out that you wear the open-toe shoe, then maybe you are going to ask you to leave. And then you could come back with the tennis shoe or closed-toe shoe.
So again, open-toe shoe is not allowed. So you must wear the closed-toe shoe. to protect your toe, to protect your feet.
There's a possibility that you will spill the chemicals while you are doing the lab on the toe, on your skin, and there is possibility that you are going to drop the test tube and the glass will be broken on the top of your toe, then you are going to hurt your feet. So that's why you shouldn't wear the open-toe shoe during the lab. And you should not carry a boot. the reagent bottle so you should not carry the chemical bottles around the room. If you just carry the chemical or chemicals around the room and there's possibility that you are going to triple or you are going to fall and then you spit all the chemicals on the floor so that's why you are not you are not allowed to carry the reagent bottles around the room.
And number two, you do not pipette means you do not suck in any liquid chemicals. through your mouth. So you are using the transfer pipette to transfer the liquid from the one bottle to another bottle. Do not put chemicals into the skin, sink, or the trash unless the instructor does so.
So if the instructor allows you to throw all the chemicals or all the metals into the sink or trash, you are able to throw it. But if the instructor doesn't say, I mean, If the instructor asks you to collect the waste into the special waste bottle, then you need to collect the chemicals in the special waste bottle. So you must ask your instructor how you can waste your chemicals and materials. And do not pour the chemicals back into the containers unless instructed to do so. So it means if you use the used chemicals, if you finish the lab and there's leftover chemicals, do not put it back to the original bottle.
You should waste it. If you do that, you are going to contaminate the original bottle, right? And then that original bottle is very expensive, right? So if you finish the lab and use the chemicals, just throw it away.
Do not operate any equipment until you are instructed in its use, right? So don't start the experiment as soon as you come to the class. You must wait until the instructor told you to do so, right?
So just wait until instructor is allow you to start the lab. So that is the number three. And number four, what is what you need to do?
So what you need to do the first, you must know where is the first aid kit and where is the eye wash bottle and where is the fire extinguisher and where is the ceiling shower, right? So you must know where the all the equipment to wash yourself away. and wash your eyes and treat your skin. So you must know where is the eye wash bottle.
So if some chemicals splash into your eyes, you must find out the eye wash bottle and clean up your eyes right away. And you must know where is the fire extinguisher in case you catch the fire. And also you must know where is the ceiling shower because in case you are soaked, like you are splashed by the chemicals, and you must take a shower.
And in each lab, we have a ceiling shower. So you go under the ceiling shower and pull the bar, then the water is coming from the ceiling and you will be cleaned. So you must know where all the safety equipment are in the class. Number B, so you must become familiar with the experiment you are going to do during the class. So we call this pre-lab.
So I really want you to do the pre-lab before you come to the class. So before you come to the class, you must know what is the lab for today, and what is the equipment, and what is the chemicals you are going to use. So if you know ahead of doing the laboratory, it will make you really easy, and you are not going to make any mistakes and any confusion. So you will finish all the labs really quickly and safely and easily. So I really strongly recommend you before you start the lab, you must read the protocol.
first and then find out what chemicals you are using and what is the steps for the each experiment. C, what you need to do is you must keep your working area really neat, clean, and organized. So then you are going to do the lab really quickly and safely.
And you are going to read the D and E and F. I'm going to talk about the F. You must do wear the shoe, right?
The witchy shoe. the closed toe shoe, not open toe shoe, right? You must wear the shoe which could protect your toe, right?
Because there is possibility that you are going to drop the glassware, and the glassware is broken, and then if you wear the open toe shoe, the broken glassware will cut your toe, right? So that's why you must wear the, to prevent that kind of incident, you must wear the clothes toe shoe, like a tennis shoe. Okay, so G, what's the number G?
Handle hot glassware. So sometimes we are using the, we are boiling the water where we are making a fire, right? So in that case, when you transfer some equipment, you must wear the glove. So wear the glove and touch the hot things, right? So I don't want you burn your skin.
So if you handle the hot stuff, you must use the clamp, right, or tong or glove, right? So that's what you need to do. Okay, so H, you could read it by yourself, and I like to point out the K, right? So the K is if you have something happens, right? You must like if you have a cut or if your skin is broken, right?
you must let the instructor know right away. Any instructor will help you out to bring the first aid and then treat your burnt skin or cut skin or bleeding. So if you have some wound or the bleeding or cutting, you must let the instructor know first.
And then the next one is same thing, report to the instructor any condition that appear unsafe or hazardous. So if you spill the chemicals or if you make a mistake with the echinemons or if you break the echinemons or if you break your skin or bleeding, please don't let instructor know and instructor will take care of it. Okay, so that's all about the biosafety lab. And after you listen to this video, I want you to read all the handout carefully. and after you read the handout carefully, watch this video.
So this video, I really like this video, the lab safety video, it talks about everything I talked. So after you watch this video and after you read the handouts and listen to my video things, you will finish out the homework. I have the questionnaires, I have a lab safety questionnaire so you can you can finish the homework and then upload the homework to the blackboard.
So you could find all the answers 100% from the handout of the lab safety and then video that I posted. So this video you could find it in the blackboard. So I posted all the materials in the blackboard and you could find everything from the blackboard. Again, after you did to the, I mean after you listen to this and watch the video, you must have finished the homework.
which is the questionnaire about the lab safety and you could find 100% answers from the handout or this video. Yeah, this video or the video from the YouTube, right? Okay, so if you have any questions, let me know and thank you.
