Importance of a Well-Written Resume
- A resume is your personal marketing brochure.
- First impression a potential employer has of you.
- Employers spend less than 30 seconds reviewing a resume.
- Essential to stand out among other applicants.
Resume Format
- Margins: 1 inch on all sides (top, bottom, left, right).
- Font:
- Color: Black only.
- Style: Professional fonts like Cambria, Calibri, Times New Roman.
- Size: 10 to 12 point font (11 point recommended).
Parts of a Resume
1. Heading
- Includes name, address, phone number, and email.
- Name: Bold and slightly larger font.
- Email: Use personal email, not work email. Remove hyperlink.
2. Education
- List in reverse chronological order.
- Do not include high school education.
- Include degree title, emphasis area, school's name, location, and graduation date.
- GPA can be included if above 3.0.
3. Experience
- List jobs in reverse chronological order.
- Details: Job title, company name, location, start and end dates.
- Use present tense for current jobs, past tense for previous jobs.
4. Activities, Honors, and Skills
- Can be combined or listed separately.
- Highlight achievements and skills.
- Do not include personal information (e.g., marital status, religious/political affiliations).
References
- Do not include on resume.
- Separate document with 3-5 professional references.
- Include full name, job title, company, address, and email.
Summary of Key Do's and Don'ts
- Do not include high school details or abbreviate months.
- Do not list a GPA below 3.0 or hyperlink email.
- Use varied verbs, correct tenses, and consistent formatting.

- Draft first version of resume using tips from lecture and handbook (pages 7-19).
- Submit through module 5 in my courses.
- Assignment worth 25 points.
- No email submissions for credit.
