Comprehensive Overview of APUSH Units 1-3

e [Music] hey all right it's time it's time welcome everybody uh to the APUSH review for units one through three I kind of love there's this little uh AI thing uh on here on the chat oh oh it's gone it's gone I thought oh man it was say it was giving me like a summary of all that you guys were talking about it's like people are talking about how they feel about the a push exam and how they feel about it and all that it's kind of great but uh anyway welcome we ain't got no time to waste but uh I want to tell you guys a couple of things uh before we get started number one we're keeping this than 90 minutes okay so soon as we're done and I hit stop streaming this will be posted on the channel so you can go back and check it or whatever but it will be posted uh secondly there's a lot of you here so I'm grateful that y'all are all here uh but I I won't be able to answer you know probably any questions that that youall putting in the chat because it's just there's too many of them but you all know I love you you know you do uh you know I do um but if uh if y'all want to use the the Super Chat I know a lot of you guys like me to shout out your teachers or your friends or whatever uh feel free to use the Super Chat to do that and um between uh units we're going through units one through three so after unit one I'll do some shoutouts a few of them after unit two do some shout outs and then after unit three when we're done I'll just finish them all up so um so you know if you want to do that it's fine I'd love to love to do that for you so um I do little AI thing did say that uh people are feeling anxious about the a push exam um and uh and yeah I know that the the a push exam is sort of like a um a great hairy beast of a thing and um and you know maybe you even saw I've seen several things on social media it's like last year you know some of the lowest scores we've ever had on the a push exam but and you're like why are you saying this this is not helpful but here's where I'm going to try to be helpful uh in case you didn't know the the rubric for the writing has changed this year uh the the bar for getting points has been lowered kind of significantly in several different areas so you know I'm not going to go through all that I've got you know DBQ laq SAQ videos y'all can watch and and catch up on that but um but yeah last year was tough but not this year baby you're here I'm here we're going to do this together and it's going to be great okay so you know I feel like yeah we're going to have a great time so I feel like I I know stress is high uh we got that exam in you know like three nights from now morning 8: a.m. whatever uh it's close uh so as is my custom feel like we should start with a joke uh and get things you know loosened up a little warmed up hope you guys enjoy this one so on March 10th 1876 Alexander Graham Bell made the first telephone call moments later he discovered that his car warranty was out of [Music] date May maybe that's only funny to me do youall get it because you know like you get the do you all get the Spam calls about the car warranty in the maybe not if not I had a great time telling it I don't know if y'all liked it or not anyway that's all all right um I I suppose we go ahead and get started so uh going through units uh one through three and um I guess we'll go ahead and get started with unit one um just so you know I you know you spent the last nine months learning this stuff there ain't no way I can tell you every little detail of what's about to come so um and or everything you've learned over this course uh I'm going to try to hit the the Big Ideas so that you can sort of fill in some of the details if you do need more help right on those details and like everything you really do need to know uh himler review guide heard it's great link down in the description you can check it out and uh see what um see if that's any good for you so uh I think that's it and I think we're ready to get started so let's start with unit one period here is 1491 to 16 1907 so this unit is all about uh the natives of America various societies um that they had contact with Europeans and then the transformation as a result of that the transformation of both societies and so we're going to organize this into a series of big ideas and for unit one we have five Big Ideas number one being Native American populations in the Americas were diverse peoples with differing ways of life shaped by the environment in which they lived so that's one of the key things you have to remember for unit one is that the natives of America all the various indigenous peoples they were not like one culture there were various cultures lots of different kinds of people and many of them and their cultures were shaped by the environment in which they lived so let's talk about those different cultures so first of all you've got the coastal regions um those peoples who lived in the coastal regions they developed permanent settlements because you know there's lots of fish fish uh small game um and the diversity of plant life so you know they they were sort of uh um stationary people uh sedentary is the word I'm was looking for um and that's in the coastal regions but then in the Great Basin region you know what is basically today modern Colorado all the way up to Canada you had a different kind of people shaped by their environment they were nomatic peoples they were hunters and gatherers and in in order to you sustain that lifestyle they had to have huge tracks of land in order to hunt Buffalo example here the Ute people uh good to know some examples um but there were also some groups in the same region who were farmers and settled and for a good example here would be the pbl their main crop was uh Maze and they got this as a result of their contact with other peoples in the meso America region uh would love to talk about all those trade routes but we can't so let's move on on to another region and see how those people live namely the Mississippi River Valley which is where it sounds like along the Mississippi River uh they were farmers so they didn't move around and that's because the river created a r you know very rich soil in which they could plant so um and these people were well connected like they participated in trade networks up and down the Mississippi River Valley and a great example here is the Cahokia civilization this is the a massive civilization uh in early North America it's like 10 to 30,000 people um they had a centralized government and you know all anyway so um that's a different kind of um group then you move up to the northeast of America like you know where we uh like New England area um we see a lot of farmers like they lived communally in long houses uh and that's partially because remember we're talking about how their uh environment impacted the way they live well they lived in these long houses that were constructed from Timber and there was lots of trees around there so that's how they lived good example here the iroy okay that's unit or that's big idea number one Let's uh keep moving along to big idea number two Europeans came to the Americas for various reasons but heimler what are those reasons I will tell you reason number one in the 13 to 1400s European states were undergoing a massive change like they're going through a process of political unification that led to Stronger more centralized state um and the consequence of that is you know many consequences but for our purposes the most significant consequence was a growing upper class uh with a taste for luxury goods from Asia but they had a problem their problem was that Muslim empires controlled the landbased trade routes to get them their fancy stuff from Asia so therefore they start looking for seab based routes to trade with Asian and South Asian Southeast Asian States uh so that's reason number one um and the first major mover in this uh search for SE routes um was Portugal they established you know what what was called a trading post Empire all around the African coast and then eventually got a really strong presence in the Indian Ocean and the reason why they were able to do this is because of new and you know adapted to be clear adapted and adopted uh Maritime technology like uh astronomical Church the astrol the latine sale the stern post Rudder etc etc so Portugal was first then the next major player you need to know was Spain they wanted to sail west to find New Paths to Asian markets just like Portugal additionally motivating Spain was the Reconquista of the Iberian Peninsula which meant you know basically they expelled all the um uh mus Muslims and Jews from the Iberian Peninsula and that meant that now that Christianity was ascendant there they were kind of motivated to SP expand Christianity elsewhere and so to that end they got our boy Christopher Columbus to you know who was sponsored by the Spanish crown and they sponsored him to sail west and when he got there he found great wealth among the inhabitants of the Americas and and his return led to this Fierce competition among European states to explore these new lands especially among uh England and Portugal and France um and uh yeah those are the big ones so then moving on to big idea number three I wonder what happened after that well the Colombian Exchange resulted in massive changes in Europe and the Americas oh my goodness let's talk about the Colombian Exchange so by definition the Colombian Exchange just refers to the transfer of people animals plants diseases from the East to the west and from the West to the east okay so exchange going both ways now you you need to know a couple examples of all those categories that I just gave you of things that were exchanged so you know I'll name a few lock on to one of them and that's all you need to know as far as crops that were exchanged uh something that went from the Americas into Europe probably the biggest one was maze okay it's kind of kind of a corn kind of thing um and then from Europe into the the Americas was wheat and rice now or I should say afro Eurasia into the Americas now it's it's not we're not just throwing out you know oh ma went from here to there and rice and whatever who cares the point is as those new foods ended up on different sides of the Atlantic it expanded the diets of uh the various populations and that led to longer lifespans better um uh better nutrition and that sort of thing so that's why it's important animals were also transferred so um from America from the Americas to Europe uh turkeys uh went across the sea from Europe to the Americas uh cattle you pigs horses were a big one uh especially for um certain um indigenous peoples who used them to you know gain advantage in Warfare and in hunting as well and farming then you had diseases arguably one of the most significant of the things transferred in the Colombian Exchange from the Americas to Europe and it's debated whether or anything came from Europe or excuse me uh went from the Americas to Europe um did I say that right no so so um a disease that came from Europe into the Americas that's what I'm trying to say um small pox that's that's the big one if you can only remember one you got the measles and that sort of thing but small pox is the big one because it devastated the population of the Americas massively um which led to the conditions that you know especially in the beginning Spanish colonizers could come in with relatively few folks and Conquer massive civilizations um and then there was the transfer of minerals and when we're talking about minerals really what we're talking about is gold and silver and especially in the beginning we're really talking about silver so and this was mainly a transfer from the Americas into Europe okay so so w with this huge amount of gold and silver coming from the Americas into the European economy first through Spain and then through others um that facilitated the big idea here is that facilitated the shift in Europe from a feudalistic society to to more capitalistic economy it's not it's not going to be full on capitalism yeah but it'll it'll get there and this is sort of like kind of a first baby step in that direction and it also changed this new influx of uh money also changed the way that exploration and colonizing was done namely through the use of joint stock companies of which I'll have more to say in a moment for now let's just go to big idea number four we got five Big Ideas this is number four the arrival of the Spanish fundamentally changed the social and economic makeup of the Americas so let's talk about this change how did the Spanish change the Americas number one excuse me I'm not crying uh change number one the encom Indus system so Spanish under the system used Native American forced labor to work their plantations and mine their precious metals but they had a problem with this uh particular system of coerced labor namely that when they were sort of you know enslaving indigenous peoples there were were frequent escapes because the native peoples knew the land far better than the Spaniards um but also don't forget that the natives of America are dying in huge numbers from small poox and measles and so uh coerced Labor uh being imposed on the indigenous peoples through things like the encomenda system and the Henda system it did not work it did not work so that leads to change number two which is increased demand for African slavery so basically Europeans began partnering with West Africans to bring enslaved Africans to the Americas which would then replace uh the labor of indigenous people which wasn't working out because of the reasons that I just said um and then change number three was the establishment of a social cast system it's also you might have heard it called the Casta system in the um in AP World History um essentially what this did was imposed a whole you know a social hierarchy on the societies of the Americas that was never there before okay so the the cast system the Spanish cast system categorized people in the Americas based on race and ancestry you know like at the top were native born Spaniards and then you know you went down to the people the Spaniards who were born in the Americas and then all the way down to Africans and Indigenous peoples and so essentially that's how they reoriented and rearranged society and that leads us to big idea number five I like unit one it's so it's so short I love it uh last big idea for unit one as a result of their interaction with each other Europeans and Native Americans Native Americans understanding of each other changed over time how did it change well let me tell you about it so each group indigenous Europeans they had different understandings of how the world worked you know respecting religion gender roles family land use power Etc and let me just give you a couple examples so in terms of land use Europeans understood land as a commodity to be bought and sold right that's my land that's your land Native Americans on the other hand had a more uh symbiotic kind of spiritual connection to the land so very different understanding of land and then religion as well so Europeans by and large were Christians uh indigenous peoples in the Americas in general engaged in a more pantheistic religion that you know I shouldn't say religion it's um various different religions uh that differed from region to region so the important point there there are other differences as well but the important point is that even though the two groups often like clashed with one another they did adopt some practices and ideas from each other so you know later on uh indigenous peoples taught English colonists how to hunt in the forests and cultivate maze for example um and all of this interaction led to a debate about the proper relationship of Europeans to Native Americans and you need to know kind of the the two faces of that debate um first was Juan Guin de Sepeda who was a Spanish philosopher he said that Native Americans were less than human and like benefited from this Arrangement benefited from the harsh labor conditions that were being imposed upon them by European bar deas kasas on the other hand who was also Spanish but he was a Dominican priest he argued for the Dignity of uh indigenous peoples as human beings and so I'm not going to get into the details of the debate any further just so you know there was a debate and there were two sides of it and those were the poster boys for both sides of the debate and that is all you need to know for unit one and that's actually not all you need to know for unit one that is those are the big pieces for unit one so I reckon we got to do some shout outs before we move on to unit two y'all feeling good y'all y'all feeling mid cringe this is a this is a time period here is607 to 1754 so kind of important to know what those dates signify 1607 founding of Jamestown 1954 beginning of the French and Indian War okay um so this unit uh oh let me get my big idea up here all right so uh yeah this unit it's all about how various European powers colonized and interacted with the Americas with a particular emphasis on the British so first big idea the Spanish Dutch French and English projects of colonization were motivated by different goals so basically what they all shared in common the different goals could be shared as or or the ones they had in common were gold God and Glory it's a great way to remember gold God and Glory so the Spanish goals were extraction of wealth silver you know gold cash crops and the spread of Christianity um and then the result of Spanish colonization was subjugated uh subjugation of native populations and reordering of the society which we just talked about then the French and the Dutch they were most mostly interested in trading Partnerships rather than Conquest um and especially important to the French was the fur trade so therefore you know there weren't very many permanent settlements uh from the French and the Dutch compared to the Spanish and you know we'll talk later about the um the British um the French the big French uh uh Colony uh was Quebec and Dutch was New Amsterdam uh and again they're they're not much interested in converting the native peoples to um Christianity um they're more interested in economics then you get the British um partially because of inflation in Britain due to the Colombian Exchange and all the you know uh Spanish silver that was being you know suffused throughout the European economy the enclosure movement uh began and that meant that land was scarce um and also you had the Puritans and uh the separatists who were um under threat of religious persecution uh and therefore um they they began to colonize the Americas as a result of social Mobility or or desire for social Mobility for economic prosperity and for Religious Freedom um and that's all I want to say about um those because we're going to talk more about the British colonies so the British colonies in North America differed from each other in their goals population makeup and Society so uh we're going to zero in now on the British colonies in North America and what you really have to remember is that they're not all the same okay they they basically they they are different according to there's a few very discernible regions in these colonies and they were uh different according to their economic purpose uh purpose of their founding what came out of them the people who moved there etc etc so make sure that you can compare and contrast these various um uh regions of of the North American colonies so let's start with the Chesapeake region um and the first permanent settlement here is Jamestown in 1607 and the goal for the establishment of this colony was pure and simple extraction of wealth okay the population that came here was mainly young men looking for work and most of them were indentured servants and although they were later replaced by enslaved Africans um and the main impetus for that change was Bacon's Rebellion uh in which uh disgruntled indentured servants and Farmers rose up and tried to kill the colonial Governor so that led to a spike in demand for African slavery their main crop there was tobacco and they had a rough time of it but eventually they sorted it out so that what was going on in the ches Peak region then move north and you've got the New England region it was settled in 1620 by Puritan uh family groups um they were part of the separatist movement in the Church of England their goal was to was was not you know was was not like Jamestown at all their goal was to establish a colony shape by their religious principles and create the occasion for economic Prosperity um because uh not they they actually had well anyway I don't want to muddy the waters that that was why they moved that was why they uh set up their um their Colony it's not not the time for all this Nuance right now we just got to get the big Ideas uh then we go further south and we get the British West Indies and the southern Atlantic Coastal colonies so uh St Christopher Barbados nevas um these were all like very warm they had a very warm climate all year round and that meant they could grow crops basically all year which led to those colonies becoming cash crop economies uh which um which meant that they now grew certain crops like big ones were sugar uh tobacco rice uh Indigo those sorts of things in order to export them that was that was their only they they didn't live off those things they exported those um and so a spike in demand for all of those goods especially tobacco and sugar led to again the further increased demand for enslaved African laborers on the plantations then then we need to visit the middle colonies like New York and New Jersey so these colonies were on the sea and they had lots of rivers and they became as a result of that hubs of trade uh and they also in some ways were organized around export economies based on cereal crops and because they were trade hubs these colonies attracted a much greater diversity of folks than you saw in some of the other regions now let's talk about those are the main regions of the now let's talk about governance in the New England colonies this is important largely they were self-governing and unusually Democratic for that time and why because of the distance between Big Mama Britain and the colonies there a big honking Ocean between them and so you know they were basically running themselves um so a good example of this Democratic impulse was the Mayflower Compact so up in the northern colonies the pilgrims drafted this document before they disembarked and essentially it organized their government based on the model of a self-governing church congregation remember they were all very religious up there uh another example of this self-governing um impulse was the House of Burgesses you found this in Virginia and essentially it was a representative assembly which could Levy taxes and pass laws uh etc etc that leads us to big idea number three what kept colonization viable was the great wealth being generated by the transatlantic trade so let's talk about the development of the Atlantic economy and here we need to talk about the Triangular Trade now this is the development of the Triangular Trade is when uh trade became truly Global in nature so um so let's talk about the three points of the triangle so start in New England where Merchants would carry uh rum from there to West Africa and then they would uh trade that for enslaved people and then they would take them across the Atlantic Sea across that brutal what was known as the Middle Passage to the Caribbean where they would trade for sugar canane and then they just repeated the thing all over again so what drove this what was the economic engine of this sort of globalizing trade well it was mercantilism baby it was mercantilism so really got to understand this uh mercantilism relied heavily it was it was the main economic system uh that was uh dominant in many of these Colonial or imperial Powers at that time uh and they relied heavily under that system on establishing colonies to provide their parent country with raw materials and new markets for their goods um and Britain for an example made uh a lot of efforts to tightly weave their colonies to the mainland through this system uh and one example of that was the Navigation Acts Navigation Acts required Merchants to trade like only on English ships uh with English colonies and goods had to pass through English ports where they were taxed by the English so who's benefiting from this yeah it was the English and so Navigation Acts was a way that uh England tried to like further like very closely knit the their North American colonies with themselves economically under the system or under a partial system of mercantilism then we get to big idea number four as European colonies became more established European powers maintained differ policies in their interactions with Native American peoples which often to put it mildly led to conflict so um so there were some Wars with indigenous peoples in the Americas and there were then alliances with some groups against others you need to know a couple of these first first metacom's war also known as King Philip's War so metacom was the chief of the Indians um he began to see that you know this British encroachment on their lands would never stop and therefore it was threatening their way of life and so they allied with other American Indian groups and attacked British settlements um the British actually allied with another indigenous group named namely the Mohawk and ended up defeating uh metacom but the point was was like this is an illustration that all is not well between the colonist and the indigenous populations okay another example of that was the poblo Revolt this was a uh against the Spanish in the southwest and so it essentially it came down to Pau resistance to Spanish land grabs and their christianizing mission which was slowly eroding their culture at least threatening to and although you know the the poblo I mean they were initially successful the Spanish eventually crushed the rebellion and you know further Consolidated their power but they did accommodate certain aspects of the indigenous poblo culture in the southwest instead of maintaining their policy of complete eradication okay big idea number five and we've got seven in this unit so big idea number five all British colonies depended more or less on enslaved African laborers but some enslaved people actively rebelled against the system okay so not all colonies relied equally on enslave labors the the number actually if you think about it on a map I wish I had this but you think about it on a map uh the number grows the number of enslaved people grows if you start North the further south you get like there's relatively few in the Northeast and the further south you get down into the Caribbean there's the most okay so um in the Middle Colonies it was a significant minority Southern and ches PE colonies the largest number of all until you get down to the Caribbean and then it's the most African slavery in this period was Justified on the idea that enslaved people were chatt that's what they call it chatt slavery chatt means that it's basically a word for property okay so these enslaved people in their minds in in the the colonist minds they were not fully human and so it was justifiable to enslave them as a result of this that in a lot of cases this is where people stop talking about slavery uh in in the early uh Americas um but the full story is that there was an awful lot of rebellion against these conditions and those rebellions took on two kind of different flavors there was sort of covert rebellion and then there was overt Rebellion so could give you lots of examples of each but just keep it B here in terms of covert sort of like under the radar secretive kind of uh Rebellion um many enslaved Africans in different regions they maintained their cultural customs and their belief systems from their Homeland they uh they broke tools they faked illness all of which you know slowed down uh harvests and planting and all that kind of stuff but then probably the most significant overt uh rebellion was the Stono Rebellion this occurred in South Carolina in 1739 and long story short a small group of enslaved people burned plantations killed lots of white folks and ultimately this um this rebellion was put down but it's important to know that this resistance occurred and that that this um Rebellion actually sent kind of shock waves of fear through the the the slave holding South and Caribbean um and that's going to have some consequences here in a moment but for that let's go to number six uh no we won't talk about the consequences here we'll talk about it later so colonial society both resembled English society and developed its own character so let's talk about Society first of all in terms of social um uh influences we need to talk about the enlightenment Enlightenment was Enlightenment ideals huge influence on colonial society so thanks to the Atlantic uh transatlantic print culture American colonists were influenced by this you know European intellectual movement the enlightenment going on way over there they heard things about natural rights they heard things about the social contract the weakening and overturning and questioning of religious Authority and that had a big impact on them and we're going to see how that worked itself out in unit 3 one response to this Enlightenment um influence in uh Colonial North America was the rise of what was known as the new light clergy they they were characterized by as those who preached against the loss of Faith because of Enlightenment influence remember Enlightenment uh thought they they poo pooed uh religious Faith um and so this new light clergy poo pooed right back on the Enlightenment and said no we we must keep uh the faith and this whole rationalistic empir empirical nonsense we're not buying it the the reason why this is important is that the new light clergy and the movement that they represent it laid the foundation for what became the first Great Awakening this was a massive religious revival that swept through the colonies uh as a result of several different folks but the two you know big names to remember here are Jonathan Edwards in um Massachusetts and George Whitfield who was sort of a traveling evangelist who went up and down preaching a marel LLY and and spellbinding in spellbinding ways to crowds and you know fields and that sort of thing it was beautiful um and uh the reason why this is important it's not just e they got really religious whatever the reason why the first grade awakening was important especially to what's about to come in unit 3 is that the first grade awakening was a truly kind of the first truly national movement in uh in colonial uh America and that meant that there was sort of like from the the southern colonies all the way up uh the coast to the northern colonies um a a kind of national identity began to be formed okay so that was the the significance of the first grade awakening truly national movement national identity is beginning to form I wonder if that's going to have any consequences spoiler alert it does which we'll get to those in unit three but for now last big idea of this unit big idea number seven British colonial policies led to an increasing mistrust in the American colonies okay so so American the American colonies were becoming more uh anglicanized Anglican means English like um like the Anglican Church is the Church of England so they're becoming more english-like and they're developing autonomous political communities many of which resembled English institutions so it might be strange or surprising to find out that they're still like real frustrated with this Arrangement okay they're they're they're becoming very English in their social and political and uh institutional lives but they're growing very frustrated um we'll talk more about this in the next unit but one illustration here is uh impressment okay um uh basically impressment was the practice of seizing Colonial men against their will and forcing them to serve in the Royal Navy uh the British royal Navy and you know people resisted this because I mean nobody wants to do anything against their will but also lots of stories about malnutrition and disease and death in the Royal Navy not many people were into that and so there was a huge amount of resistance to this you know coerced service in the Royal Navy that led to 3 days of rioting and resistance in response to you know the general impressment that was going on for King George's War the point is this is what you need to remember the point is colonists were becoming increasingly aware of their natural rights and they were becoming tired they're growing tired of these kinds of violations okay so they're becoming kind of like a teenager you're like I I I my own person now and you can't tell me what to do dad um anyway that's the point so uh and that is the end of unit 2 and you know guard thyselves because uh unit unit three is is a beefy one so um let me get this off of here and we'll do a few uh shout outs before we move on to unit three y'all feeling good here we go Zoe lever shout out to Irish k shout out to Mrs uh selin seelin hope I said that right all right thank you guys appreciate that now let's uh let's get down to business talk about unit three this is a longer one we've got 10 Big Ideas here and the time date or time stamps are time stamps dates 1754 to 1800 so 1754 French and Indian War uh 1800 the election of Thomas Jefferson okay let's see why those time periods are such a why those uh dates are so important let's start with big idea number one the French and Indian war led to increased land for the American colonies and a greater burden of Taxation okay so um talk about the French and Indian War this is also this is a smaller part of the Seven Years War uh so if you see the Seven Years War just remember French and Indian War just a smaller part of that war this is a mutual contract uh conflict between the French and the British uh British are getting nervous about French encroachment in the Ohio River Valley and vice versa long story short the British win okay so French are completely ousted from North America and the Louisiana Territory is transferred to Spain as a result the British doubled their land Holdings in North America all way to the Mississippi River but it's the consequences of this war that are most important for us after this war American colonists began moving West that increased conflicts with the indigenous peoples living there therefore as a result of all those conflicts uh British Parliament passed uh uh essentially passed the Proclamation line of 1763 saying you know you can't go any further west than this line right here basically the Ohio River Valley this frustrated colonists because they had shed their blood they felt entitled to The Spoils of War but they weren't going to get it something else getting the colonist Saucy was taxation the British uh levied new taxes on the colonies in order to help pay for this war and so that increased tax burden fell on the colonists and that's going to cause some problems which we're going to learn about here in big idea number two so British colonial policy specifically taxation without Colonial representation in Parliament led to the Revolutionary War uh so why did new taxes cause so much angst in the colonies let me tell you first salut salutary neglect okay when when when colonists flouted the Navigation Acts I mean the the British crown basically just like yeah it turned to Blind Eye because of the distance remember but now that that's the idea of s AR neglect that like they're so far apart they kind of the British Parliament and the crown were kind of hands off letting the colonist do whatever they wanted but now all of a sudden they win the French and Indian War the Seven Years War uh and now Parliament is cranking down and demanding more tax revenue out of them they weren't fans of that so there were salutary neglect also there were new laws and and further taxation so as a result you had the stricter enforcement of the navigation acts you for example you had the Quartering Act uh which in which Imperial troops would remain in the colonies in order to make sure that they submitted also most stanky and OD of them all was the Stamp Act which was attack on all paper items and American colonists love their paper uh items like newspapers Etc so um here are the colonist objections essentially Parliament is extracting taxes from us without our consent they're they're taxing us but we have no representation in Parliament and so parliamentarians hear this complaint and they respond back yeah but you've got virtual representation meaning that within Parliament all classes are represented not necessarily all locations and so the colonist they're not having this and so they have a response in what was known as the Stamp Act Congress there they uh composed a formal petition to Parliament to repeal the Stamp Act and it's important to realize that they did this as loyal British citizens they they are they're not thinking about Revolution yet they're just they just wanted their rights okay but the British just kept on introducing new taxes and you know the response from the colonies was a massive boycott of British goods so there's this growing tension between the colonies and Britain and then the tension reaches a boiling point in an event known as the Boston Massacre here British Imperial officers fired into a crowd killed 11 colonists and and I mean you know it it was for sure propagandized in the colonies but regardless whether it was exaggerated or not it that was a sure sign to American colonist of increasing British tyranny but then they had other acts of resistance namely Boston Tea Party so this was a response to the Tea Act of 1773 and as a result of that colonist dumped 45 tons of British tea into Boston Harbor British respond with the coercive acts which basically shut down the British Harbor until they paid for the Lost te it was a lot it was Lot very valuable what they throw threw into the harbor there and shutting down that Harbor meant that colonists you know their economy was at least in that region was significantly affected so so we got this spat going back and forth news of all this spreads throughout the colonies and that's going to lead to a growing support for the Patriot movement and where did they get their ideas well let's talk about big idea number three Enlightenment ideals exhibited a major influence on the American independence movement especially exhibited in Thomas Payne's common sense the Declaration of Independence okay um oh yeah Enlightenment so lots of Enlightenment ideals there's a few that you probably should stuff into your brain folds for this exam one is natural rights two is a social contract three separation of powers in government um and what's important is for you to understand how those those Enlightenment ideas ideals are um exhibited in um these two documents that I mentioned in the big idea common sense and the Declaration of Independence so common sense written by Thomas Payne is incredibly popular pamphlet in the colonies by the spring of 19 19 1776 uh a majority of colonists had been convinced in in some part by common sense that Independence was the only way forward with Britain then you've got the Declaration of Independence this is deeply influenced by Enlightenment thought you had uh natural rights you know PE people um are endowed by their creator W by with certain unalienable rights there's natural rights um you also had uh social contract uh to secure these rights governments are instituted and if you know they're tyrannical you throw them off and you know you make a new government that's the social contract so these ideas are turning lot of people into converts for Independence not certainly not all certainly not all but a lot that leads us to big idea number four out of 10 despite Britain's uh military and financial advantages the American Patriots won the Revolutionary War and gained independence oh baby so in the American Revolution two groups you need to know the Loyalists and the Patriots the Loyalists they were American colonists who opposed independence Patriots were also American colonists who favored Independence okay loyalist oppose Patriots they're for Independence so the Patriot cause succeeded it probably shouldn't have like you look at all the measures you look at all the data it probably should not have exceeded succeeded but it did succeed in no small part because of the leadership from George Washington uh who was the general of the Continental Army um and in the beginning of the war it was not looking good for them like American suffered enormous kind of humiliating defeats but there was a turning point like on your exam you're not going to need to know all the battle strategies and the weapons and all the what you need to understand is one particular battle and it's consequence for the revolution that is the Battle of Saratoga in 1777 it was the colonial Victory it was the American victory in the Battle of Saratoga that convinced France to Ally with the Americans against the British and that's largely thanks to Benjamin Franklin's diplomatic work in France um and with uh with French intervention against their old Ally or against their old enemy uh the British whom they had just lost the Seven Years War I they were eager to get in uh and make sure that they could um beat the British this time but they were the French were not going to offer any help while it looked like the Americans were kind of not going to win win this war but the Battle of Saratoga changed that that's how we got the French to come help us and ultimately with their help uh the battle ends at the uh or excuse me the war ends at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 and that's when we get the Treaty of Paris in 1783 which officially recognizes American independence and all of us let us high five a bald eagle right now I I I should have brought a bald eagle with me but in spirit let us high five a bald eagle all right uh but things don't remain uh Rosy for long so let's go to big idea number five the Articles of Confederation was the first Constitution of the United States of America and it failed largely because the federal government was too weak so before during and after the revolution States had assembled their own constitutions and governments and in in the drafting of the Articles of Confederation those uh smaller State uh models were consulted and implemented and in some cases ulated so the Articles this is the first Constitution of the United States basically uh it was ratified in 1781 and it put all federal power into a legislative body okay which is to say congress okay there was no executive there was no judicial branch there was no provision for a National military no power to tax the TA States Congress was exceedingly weak the federal government was exceedingly weak under the Articles of Confederation but there there were some you know there's The Good the Bad and the Ugly that comes with the Articles maybe okay maybe two good things okay one good thing it definitely avoided uh the potential for a tyrannical Central Power okay they the colonies still had a monarchy hangover they didn't want that the article succeeded in that the other potentially good thing was the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 basically this provided a plan for how unformed territories could apply to the union for Statehood um and this is how this stuck with us through you Westward Expansion and all the addition of new States um throughout the Union uh and additionally another consequential uh thing that the um Northwest Ordinance did was abolish slavery in the Northwestern territories we'll pick that up tomorrow the that and that's about the only good things that I could possibly think of for the the article articles Confederation on the bad side it was like riddled with weaknesses it was very difficult to be effective um like I said no Judiciary no executive you know no president no power to raise taxes nothing like that the problem that or I should say the event that exposed all those weaknesses of the Articles was a little event called Shay's Rebellion so this was a rebellion of farmers in Massachusetts and it was basically it was squashed by the local militia so what's the problem well in other colonies like leaders became alarmed in other colonies because what if more rebellions like this happened and and if it did there was no National military to call on because there was there was no executive there was no you know there was just Congress and they they were broke basically so that that event Shay's Rebellion really highlighted the weaknesses of the Articles in a way that was like we got to do something we we got to change some things around here and I wonder if we'll talk about what they're going to change we are going to talk about what they change uh so let's talk about the Constitutional Convention which was called uh to draft a new constitution to rectify the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation so the purpose of the constitutional convention was to revise the Articles of the Confederation like they weren't they weren't going to write a new constitution they were going to revise the Articles but it quickly turned into drafting a new constitution as this developed two factions uh emerged there was the Federalists who favored a stronger central government and then there was the Anti-Federalists who favored more state power and a weaker central government the Federalists or I should say the Anti-Federalist they liked the Articles of Confederation just fine fine I mean some had some complaints but they like the Articles confederation so between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalist there was a big debate um as the Constitutional Convention wore on and they began having uh conversations about a new governing document so you need to know some of these debates a big debate was how representation would work in the new constitution um and the new government you had two potential plans the Virginia plan which said that people would be represented by population and then the New Jersey Plan which said basically everyone should have one vote per state Okay the reason why these are important is because you know like Virginia big state and so if the new government is going to be um the people are going to be represented by population big States like Virginia they're going to be just fine uh and they're going to be more powerful but New Jersey is a small state they want one vote per state in the new government uh and in that way smaller states have outside power uh as uh in um comparison to the bigger States like Virginia so they're debating about this they're fighting it's getting dirty but the compromise that ultimately merged these two was called the Great Compromise or sometimes you'll hear it called the Connecticut Compromise basically the compromise said fine what we're going to do is have a bamal legislature which means there are two houses there's the House of Representatives in which the people will be represented by population and then there's the Senate in which each state is represented equally by two Representatives so that was a big compromise then there was the Compromise over slavery first you have the three- fifths compromise uh slavery as you can imagine was a an exceedingly uh contentious debate uh the three- fifths compromise basically said um that in terms of uh representation in the House of Representatives 3- fifths of the population of enslaved people um would be counted towards representation then another compromise was the Prohibition of the international slave trade but not until excuse me not until 1808 so they just like kicked the can down the road uh for about 20 years then there was the debate over ratification and this is another fight between the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists um the on the Federalist side you had Alexander Hamilton James uh John J James Madison they wrote a uh group of papers group of essays called The Federalist Papers um which they outlin their ideas basically e explicated the entirety of the Constitution as it stood as it began circulating for you know ratification and uh and ultimately the Federalists won this debate but they did have to concede to the Anti-Federalist demands for a Bill of Rights uh in the Constitution which explicitly outlined the protections of the various civil civil liberties uh guaranteed to American CI citizens so um so what we got as a result is the Constitution of the United States uh and it was indeed ratified which leads us to big idea number seven the Constitution of the United States created a new central government defined by federalism and the separation of powers so let's uh let's get cozy with the Constitution so what is federalism please please do not get confused by this so many students do Federalism is not the same as federalism like Alexander Hamilton and it's not not the same as Federal like Federal power like you know the national government Federalism is just the sharing of power between the federal government and state governments that's all it is so when you see federalism on your exam which you probably will don't think Federal power like uh you know like Congress in Washington Federalism is the sharing of power between the federal government and the state government it's not saying that federals should have more power it's just saying we're sharing it okay that's that's enough um federalism as a system of governance is outlined for us in the 10th Amendment in that Bill of Rights basically what it says is that unless the Constitution explicitly names a power that belongs to the federal government then that power is reserved for the states that's they're called reserved powers um so so the Constitution sets up a system of of government characterized by federalism but also we see the separation of powers and checks and balances this is you know uh that uh Enlightenment ideal uh known as republicanism so in terms of the separation of powers we have in the federal government under the Constitution three branches of government we've got the legislative which is the lawmaking Branch the judicial which is the Supreme Court which interprets the laws and declares whether or not they are constitutional and then you've got the executive branch oh by the way that well never mind we'll get there um and then you got the executive branch which is characterized by the president which is uh there to make sure to to execute the laws to make sure people are carrying them out all of these three branches act independently that's how it's set up by nature but there are several ways that each can check and balance the other the the president can veto legislation from um from Congress and then Congress can override that veto by a two-thirds vote uh the Supreme Court can declare a law unconstitutional uh and the Pres you know so there's all sorts of ways that they can um check and balance each other the point is this is how the Constitution sets up our government and that brings us to big idea number eight out of 10 we got 10 here here's number eight ideals about no the ideals of the American Revolution affected Society in America in terms of gender roles and debates about slavery but while they also inspired Revolutions in France and Haiti okay um so slavery bitter debate um not surprisingly the ideals of freedom and democracy led to a renewed debate in the United States over the morality of slavery like northern states abolished slavery or began the process of gradual emancipation in the South not so much they're they're not doing it um and so that's going to cause significant you know tension later um then in terms of women they were not social considered socially equal to men but the the development of the idea of the Republican Motherhood in some circles assigned women a new purpose so in under the ideals of the Republican Motherhood the best way that women could influence political realities because they had no political efficacy they could not vote or otherwise run for office or get elected or anything like that so under the Republican Motherhood the bone that they threw women was hey look the best way you can influence political realities was by raising virtuous sons who are instructed in the principles of Liberty and who's going to do that their mom so that's the idea of the Republican Motherhood then the ideals of the American Revolution inspired other revolutions number one the French Revolution so they were deeply inspired by the American revolution's emphasis on freedom and the right of the people to consent to their political leadership and so they went ahead and had a revolution it was a lot um different in a lot of ways from the American Revolution um probably more a proper Revolution than the American Revolution but we won't get into all that um and then they you know went ahead and cut the king's head off and then they have themselves a republic the point is American Revolution inspired much of the French Revolution French Revolution okay so American Revolution French Revolution then further inspiration trickles down to Haiti okay there in the Haitian Revol Revolution Haiti during this time was a colony of France on this island uh was uh the population was majority black uh majority enslaved um and so you know like they're hearing all these ideals of Liberty equality and they're like yeah that sounds kind of nice and so they raise up they they rise up overthrow French Colonial leadership and ends up being the first free black Republic in the entire world okay so um so that's that's it for um uh inspiration uh big idea number nine get some water all right big idea number nine the president presidencies of George Washington and John Adams set presidents for the way uh America would behave regarding the relationship between the federal government and state government's economic policy and foreign policy saying a lot there let's let's uh let's explain that so once um once we have our new government under the Constitution quickly we uh we get two political parties um we got the Federalists and we got the Democratic rep Republicans and they disagreed on basically everything they disagreed on the relationship between federal and state governments uh case in point the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794 excuse me remember Shay's Rebellion that we talked about before that freaked everybody out in the colonies and they're like oh there's no National Army what are we going to do if that happens again not so with the Whiskey Rebellion remember now we've got ourselves an executive we've got ourselves a federal army someone and someone to lead it and execute those laws and so in uh the Whiskey Rebellion Farmers attacked tax collectors and this time instead of you know the local militia putting it down Washington George stinking Washington assembles federal troops to go quash squash that Rebellion Democratic Republicans see this so there's lots of footsteps upstairs uh hey this is this real life um so so so Washington was a federalist in case I didn't mention that that seemed like a good use of federal power to him Democratic Republicans you know Thomas Jefferson and them over on the other side they criticized that as significant Federal overreach like yeah plus you know Jefferson and his folks they were very sympathetic to Farmers and it was farmers who were doing the Rebellion against the federal tax and so they're again they're just divided on everything basically they're also divided on economic policy um good one here is Hamilton's National Bank so Hamilton institutes this National Bank or gets this you know going through the use of the elastic clause in the Constitution or you may have heard it called the necessary and proper clause um in order basically he does this in order to consolidate the Revolutionary War debts from the states into a national debt um and it did have the effect of binding States together and increasing the credit of the United States in the world but Democratic Republicans criticize this because it diminished the economic independence of the states and so again they they they're tossing they they're um uh uh fighting on all sorts of things there's economics they also fight on foreign policy here we'll go to the second President of the United States namely John Adams uh to the XYZ Affair which is actually a rare example of an agreement between the Federalists and the Dem Democratic Republicans so the XYZ Affair basically was this the French were seizing American Trade ships and so John Adams sends a delegation to figure it out but they demanded uh those ships demanded a bribe excuse me the the French diplomats demanded a bribe before they would even talk to the Americans that not surprisingly led to outrage in in in the Americas in the United States and that was large scale agreement ment between the the two political parties over what you know that this was this was wrong and a slap in the face of American dignity but then they started disagreeing again for example with the Alien and Sedition Acts these uh Together made it illegal to um or I should say legal and easy to deport any non-citizen in the United States and it made it also illegal to criticize the federal government publicly so like shut your mouth whole uh don't say anything about what we're doing um and that was a federalist policy that happened under the presidency of John Adams and it was a federalist policy needless to say massive opposition from democratic republicans codified in the Virginia and Kentucky resolutions so basically what those said is that if a federal government passes a law that is clearly unconstitutional then the states have the right to nullify them and that is going to set a precedent and and sort of a groundwork for uh what we're going to see um in tensions leading up to the Civil War so just put that in your pocket we'll come back to it tomorrow and that leads us to the last big idea of the night big idea number 10 ideas about National American national identity found expression in art literature and architecture and while there were National expressions of national expressions of American identity there were also strong Regional repres presentations as well so when we're talk about national identity you have to understand yes there is a growing sense of We Belong to the United States like we are Americans but there's also still very distinct regional identities as well so got to keep those two uh in ttention um and we see this in you know some of this national identity in the Arts so artists would devote themselves their their work to historical themes like Charles Wilson Peele um John Trum uh Trumble can't say that um you've probably seen some of their paintings in your textbooks uh you also see this national identity begin to emerge in the literature of the time so Benjamin Franklin was a big one here his uh Poor Richard's Almanac which was filled with you know like aphorisms like real pithy uh aphorisms uh and and that book was exceedingly popular and it helped shaped the American identity as people who are industrious hardworking Thrifty that sort of thing practical that sort of thing um and then there was uh National more Regional identity in terms of architecture so real clear example of this would be the classical Revival style of architecture in uh Thomas Jefferson's home Montello I mean if you've seen it it's got the columns and the Dome um and that was a very you know a bar growing from European um uh styles of architecture but it it is um it is also giving unique identity to particular regions and that ladies and gentlemen is it that's it for unit one through three so I'm going to go crazy uh reading the rest of these shoutouts if you have to go before that same time same place tomorrow we'll go through units 4 through six and uh we will um we'll have all the same stuff so uh hope you can join me uh tomorrow again if you need more detailed help than I'm able to give you here in this you know 90minut session himler review guide I
