Challenges in Studying for Nursing School
- Students are often told to "think like a nurse," but this is unclear for beginners.
- Overstudying and deep-diving into every detail can be overwhelming and unsustainable.
- Focusing on must-know information improves efficiency and understanding.
The LATTE Method Framework
- A five-step study approach to organize and focus nursing knowledge:
- L: Look — Assess the patient's appearance, signs, and symptoms.
- A: Assessments — Identify key assessment steps for the condition.
- T: Tests — Note typical diagnostic tests ordered.
- T: Treatments — List common treatments and interventions.
- E: Education — Summarize patient education and, optionally, evaluation of interventions.
Applying the LATTE Method (Example: Broken Ankle)
- Look: Patient reports severe pain, possibly pale, diaphoretic, fast breathing, guarding the injury.
- Assessments: Conduct pain assessment (0-10 scale), check pulses and capillary refill distal to injury, assess movement and sensation, palpate area.
- Tests: Main test is an X-ray of the affected ankle.
- Treatments: Possible surgery or casting, pain medication, activity restrictions, antibiotics (for compound fractures), and physical therapy.
- Education: Teach about activity restrictions, crutch use, signs of complications, medication management, pin care if relevant, and when to contact the provider.

- Always learn normal physiology ("phys") and pathophysiology ("patho") as a foundation before using the LATTE framework.
