Lecture Notes: Theatrical Design and Types of Sets

Introduction

  • Focus on elements of theatrical design: elements, point, structure, line, focus.
  • Discussion on the major types of theatrical sets.

Types of Theatrical Sets

1. Box Set

  • Definition: Realistic depiction of a room on stage.
  • Usage: Primarily used in shows with one main location.
  • Structure: Often used in proscenium theaters; back walls form three sides of a 'box'.
    • Audience views through the invisible fourth wall.
  • Nature: Does not have to be hyper-realistic but often is.

2. Unit Set

  • Definition: A generic, multi-purpose setting.
  • Usage: Functions as different locations without physical changes.
    • Popular in modern-day Shakespearean performances.
  • Characteristics: Includes various shapes and sizes, multiple levels.
    • Not distinctive to any specific location or time period.
  • Design: Often starts as a white model (unpainted, no texture).
  • Scene Changes: Achieved through repositioning furniture and lighting changes.

3. Multiple Set

  • Definition: Opposite of the unit set, involves moving elements.
  • Usage: Transforms to represent different locations.
    • Popular in musical performances with grand scene changes.
  • Challenges: Requires solutions for storing, moving set pieces on and off.

Considerations for Set Design Projects

  • Key Questions:
    • What type of stage will best tell the story?
    • Does the play have multiple or central locations?
  • Objective: Select a set type that aligns with the script and storytelling needs.
  • Next Steps: Incorporate basic elements of design learned previously.
