This video lesson covers the verb estar in the preterite. Guess why? Oh, right! Because it's also irregular in the preterite.
Estar, if you've forgotten, means to be. In the present tense, estar is changed as follows. Yo estoy.
Tú estás. Él. Ella está.
Usted está. Nosotros estamos. Nosotras estamos. Ellos están.
Ellas están. Ustedes están. Some examples. Yo estoy triste.
¿Ok? Raúl está en el baño. Ellos estuvieron, ellas estuvieron, ustedes estuvieron. Those examples again, yo estoy triste, become yo estuve triste.
Raúl está en el baño. Raúl estuvo en el baño. Something that I should clarify for you, the preterite tense is something that we use for actions that are started and finished. So when I use estar with emotions in the preterite, even though I can translate the first example, I was sad, estuve triste, it kind of carries the idea of I got sad.
Stay tuned for the videos on the imperfect tense where this will be explained more clearly. Now I have some forms of estar in the present tense. Go ahead and change it into the preterite. Francisco estuvo.
Nosotras estamos. Nosotras estuvimos. Yo estoy. Yo estuve.
Usted está. Usted estuvo. Okay, now I'll give you some sentences in English, translate them into Spanish. Pause the video if you need more time. Use the word bank and conjugation chart as well if you need to.
Gilberto was in school. Gilberto estuvo en la escuela. Victor was in the pool.
Victor estuvo en la piscina. Dora and Clara were at the museum. Dora y Clara estuvieron en el museo. We got tired. We were tired.
Estuvimos cansados. Don't forget that the adjectives in Spanish are masculine, feminine, and plural depending on who we are talking about. So because we're saying that we are, that's multiple people, so we're really saying we got tireds.
Because we is plural, so we'll say in Spanish, estuvimos cansados. Or, nosotros estuvimos cansados. Raul got bored. Raúl estuvo aburrido.
I was at home. Yo estuve en casa. My friends were at the movies.
Mis amigos estuvieron en el cine. Okay, I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions about this video. Gracias y adiós.
