May 27, 2025
Using Inhalers with Spacers and Masks
Importance of Using a Spacer
Inhalers are the most common method to take asthma medicine.
To effectively deliver medicine to the lungs, use a spacer.
Without a spacer, only about one-third of the medicine reaches the lungs.
Steps to Use an Inhaler with a Spacer and Mask
Prime the Inhaler
Follow the manufacturer's instructions to prime before use.
Position
Stand or sit up straight.
Prepare the Inhaler
Remove the cap and shake the inhaler.
Insert Inhaler into Spacer
Ensures medicine reaches the lungs effectively.
Breathing Technique
Breathe out fully.
Using the Mask
Place the mask firmly on the face, covering nose and mouth.
Press down on the inhaler and breathe in and out slowly six times.
Repeat if Necessary
Shake the inhaler before each additional pump.
Allow 30 seconds to one minute between puffs if more than one is ordered.
Post-Use Care
Wipe the face after using inhaled steroid medicine.
Clean the spacer weekly:
Disassemble and soak pieces in warm soapy water for 15 minutes.
Rinse with clean water and air dry.
Do not wipe inside the spacer to avoid damaging the special lining.
