Summary of A Christmas Carol Stave 1

what exactly happens in stave 1 of a Christmas Carol let's find out how is it going revision squad it's me Liam aka mr. Knight aka dystopia junkie and this is me officially kicking off my a Christmas Carol revision series and what better way to start than by summarizing the books first stave the rest of the novella will follow in due course but if I were to sum up the entire thing in one video well it'd be pretty long now you know the bag by now if this video helps you out please do let me know by liking commenting and subscribing and if you really want to make the most out of watching this video grab a pen and some paper so that you can make notes of the things I say as I go right so the first stave indeed the novella as a whole begins in a really odd way it tells us that Jacob Marley Scrooge's business partner is dead straight off the bat ideas of death ghosts and the supernatural can be seen now here's the thing Marley's not just being dead for a random amount of time he's been dead for exactly 7 years to this very day which also happens to be Christmas Eve Dickens is establishing a connection between the supernatural and Christmas it seems now was anyone particularly sad when Marley died no not really not even Scrooge speaking of Scrooge is then his turn to be described and you know what he's not a pleasant chap whatsoever not only does he look horrible but he behaves in horrible ways too he won't even give his employee Bob Cratchit an extra bit of coal for a fire that's in his part of the offices it's really cold in there and Scrooge he isn't bothered so unsurprisingly there's not many people who seem to like Scrooge and he's alright with that speaking of people not liking Scrooge someone who apparently does then turns up and that person is Fred Scrooge's nephew he wishes his uncle a Merry Christmas but Scrooge responds with a ham duck basically showing that he thinks at Christmastime well is a bunch of nonsense he really does not like it in fact he dislikes Christmas so much that he flat-out rejects Fred's offer of having Christmas dinner over at his the next day still jolly Fred leaves Scrooge's work place stopping to have a quick friendly word with his uncle's employee Bob Cratchit so pretty much as soon as Fred leaves 2 men enter Scrooge's workplace they ask if you'd be happy to provide financial aid for the less fortunate especially now at Christmastime and guess what Scrooge just flat-out rejects them in a bit of a rant he suggests that's the poor should be in prisons or be sent to the work houses or otherwise die and decrease the surplus population not rice unsurprisingly the two men leave after that Scrooge the garage Inc B gives his employee Christmas Day Off and once the working day is over Scrooge eats dinner alone reads and then goes home so Scrooge goes home which actually used to belong to Marley just as he's about to go in something really weird happens he thinks he sees Marley's face in the door knocker and understandably this leaves him a bit spooked I mean who wouldn't feel shocked and a little scared to see the face of their long dead business associate suddenly appear on their front door well it turns out that Scrooge is spooked for most of the evening he does things like check the various rooms and starts to imagine things really Marley's face all around the house he just about starts to settle down whew and then a bell in one of Scrooge's rooms starts to chime uh-oh and then someone or should that be something appears who that's right Marley's ghost Scrooge and notices something very interesting about the ghosts appearance it has a thick heavy chain wound around it complete with cash boxes Keys padlocks etc things that's in one way or the other relates to Marley's former line of work and Scrooge's current employment now screwed doubts the ghosts authenticity to begin with trying to come up with loads of different reasons as to why he's seeing it but eventually this softens and he begins to listen to its message but what is that message well Marley's ghost tells Scrooge that he's got to roam the world for eternity he says that this is punishment for the greed and selfishness that he exhibited in life which manifested itself in his and therefore Scrooge's line of work he then goes on to suggest that he should have been much more generous and charitable when he was alive as that would have allowed him to avoid this horrible torturous fate now before he leaves Marley's ghost gives Scrooge one last warning Scrooge will be haunted by three spirits and if he does not learn from their lessons he will have no hope of avoiding the same fate that Marley has faced throughout his afterlife and once he passes on this final warning Marley's ghost leaves as he watches his friend vanish Scrooge tries to dismiss the whole evening by saying humbug but finds that he stops at the first syllable maybe he's learning something already so there you go that is the first stave of a Christmas Carol summarize for you I hope that you found this video to be informative and useful and that it's giving you a little bit more confidence when it comes to tackling this text please do like comment and subscribe if you made it this far and remember that I hope you have an awesome rest of the day if you are revising police do take frequent short breaks as a burned out student it is not a happy or successful student which is what I think you deserve to be so what does happen in that first stage well we meet a very grumpy horrible man he seems quite cruel than hates Christmas and then a ghost turns up who tells him that even more spirits are going to turn up as well spirits that might want to teach him a lesson or two or three [Music] [Music]
