Understanding Stem Cells and Their Importance
Apr 16, 2025
Lecture on Stem Cells
Introduction
Topic
: Stem Cells
Explanation of what stem cells are.
Importance of stem cells.
Examination of examples: Embryonic stem cells, Adult stem cells, and Plant stem cells.
Key Features of Stem Cells
Ability to Divide
Stem cells can divide by mitosis to form more cells.
One stem cell can become two, then four, and so on.
Ability to Differentiate
Stem cells can differentiate into specialized cells.
Example: A stem cell can become a nerve cell or a skin cell.
Importance of Stem Cells
Human Development
Human life starts with a sperm fertilizing an egg to form a zygote.
The zygote divides by mitosis to form an embryo.
Embryonic stem cells can differentiate into any type of cell (nerve, skin, blood cells).
These cells continue to divide and differentiate to form a baby over nine months.
Adult Stem Cells
Characteristics
Adult stem cells can no longer differentiate into all types of cells.
They are somewhat specialized, with limited differentiation potential.
Found in places like bone marrow.
Function
Produce cells such as red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.
Replace damaged cells but do not form new tissues.
Plant Stem Cells
Location and Function
Found in meristem tissues in plants, especially in growing areas like tips of roots and shoots.
Differentiate into various plant cells and tissues (e.g., palisade cells, phloem, xylem, root hair cells).
Persist for the plant's entire life, unlike embryonic stem cells in animals.
