Key Features of Stem Cells

    • Example: A stem cell can become a nerve cell or a skin cell.

Importance of Stem Cells

  • Human Development

    • Embryonic stem cells can differentiate into any type of cell (nerve, skin, blood cells).
    • These cells continue to divide and differentiate to form a baby over nine months.

Adult Stem Cells

    • Adult stem cells can no longer differentiate into all types of cells.
    • They are somewhat specialized, with limited differentiation potential.
    • Found in places like bone marrow.
  • Function
    • Produce cells such as red blood cells, white blood cells, or platelets.
    • Replace damaged cells but do not form new tissues.

Plant Stem Cells

    • Found in meristem tissues in plants, especially in growing areas like tips of roots and shoots.
    • Differentiate into various plant cells and tissues (e.g., palisade cells, phloem, xylem, root hair cells).
    • Persist for the plant's entire life, unlike embryonic stem cells in animals.
