Summary of 'Araby' by James Joyce

hello friends welcome back to my channel MKkesh English so in this video we shall summarize a very interesting story titled Arabi by James Joyce james Joyce famous Irish noveist poet and literary critic so let's know about the story in brief the story Arabi is about a young boy who is very excited about going to a bazar bad means special market because he wants to buy something for a girl he likes however in the end he feels very sad and very disappointed because the trip does not go as he expected so the story is about growing up and realizing that life is not always a wonderful always as wonderful as we imagine it to be so when you read the story you will find some sort of infatuation which generally some people have in the childhood so there's a difference between love and infatuation and um some changes you'll find here which you notice when people are growing into adulthood from childhood so let's see what does the story say here so the story takes place in Dublin Ireland in a neighborhood called North Richmond Street the street is very quiet dull and lifeless just like the boy's daily life the boy lives in a house where a priest once lived and died so the house feels very dark and very empty the street is boring boring except when this the street is is boring except when the school ends and the children come out to play otherwise the remaining time the the street looks very boring very empty the boy and his friends play in the dirty backyards and muddy lanes but the lives feel small and unexited unexciting so this dull setting of the story is very important because it makes the boy dream of something more exciting like the Arabi bazar arabi bazar very famous bazar which all the expensive things very pomp show expensive things are being sold out so though he's in such location obviously he'll be dreaming for a very more exciting place like the rabbi bazar then the narrator narrator is here the boy the boy has a huge crush on a girl who lives across the street and she's the sister of his friend Mangan so who is this girl this girl is the sister of this boy uh the sister is is the sister of this boy's friend Mangan right so it's friend sister so he watches her everyday when she comes out of her house he follows her secretly on the way to school he thinks about her all the time even in places where romance does not belong for example in the middle of a noisy street which is filled with drunken men so this kind of noisy street is not a place where a romance can happen but even he gets such kind of romantic feelings romantic ideas in his mind even at that place also he's so crazy about this girl then he sees his love as something pure and special like a holy mission so however the boy barely talks to her the boy really talks to her barely talks to her but his love is not based on the real conversation but his love is not based on the real conversation they are not spoken much the love is based on his own imagination that's fancy fancy in imagination so here finally one day the girl finally speaks to this boy she asked if he's going to Arabi and a big bazar coming to town she asked that is he going to this Arabi big bazar then she says that she wishes that she could go but she's unable to go to this Arabi big bazar because she has to attend a religious event at her convent school the boy feels very excited and he promises her that yes he promises that yes he will go to Arabi bazar and he'll bring some gift for this girl this mangan's friend Mongan's sister so this conversation makes this boy very extremely happy he feels like he has a special mission to bring her something beautiful object from the bazar so from this moment Arabi becomes a magical dream in his mind he imagines it as a place which is full of wonders something completely different from his boring life so he starts dreaming about the bazar he will go there he'll buy this he'll buy that right now after talking to Mangan sister the boy cannot think about anything else he daydreams about Arabi Bazar all the times in school he cannot concentrate on his lessons he loses interest in everything else he feels that everything in his daily life is annoying and very slow because somehow he just want to go to he wants to go to Arabi Bazar his expectations grow bigger and bigger he thinks the bazar will be magical place where he can buy something wonderful for the girl for Mangan sister so finally the Saturday has arrived but things to do things do not go as planned saturday has come right and he has to go to Arabi Bazar to go to Bazar what does he require money and for money he has to ask somebody so the boy needs money from his uncle to go to Arabi Bazar in the morning he tells his uncle about it and but the uncle does not pay attention in the morning and the boy is waiting till evening for his uncle to come home but the uncle is late so as he waits what happened in between a woman named Mrs mercer visits the house and she stay and stays for tea talking about some boring things the boy is angry and restless because the time is running out he has to go to Arabi Bazar he's still waiting for his uncle to get money his aunt tells him "Maybe you won't be able to go." Making him more anxious now finally his uncle comes the uncle comes home late but he's drunk he forgot about Arabi completely he casually says "All work and no play make all work and no play no play makes Jack a dull boy." Showing that he doesn't take the boy's excitement seriously he doesn't take this boy's excitement seriously he comes late he's drunk finally his uncle gives money to this boy but by now it's very late it's already at night and we can't imagine that will the bazar be opened or be closed even though even though the boy is upset the boy rushes to the train station to go to Arabi Bazar and finally when the boy finally reaches Arabi it is not what he expected at all because he dreamt a lot of things full bazar pomp and show so many expensive things but when he reached in the night something something else he observed what it's almost closing most of the stalls are already shut down the place is quiet and boring not magical and not excited as he imagined the people there do not care about him because they they're going to close the shops now what happened here he walks up to a stall where a young woman is selling some things she's talking and laughing with two men and she's not paying attention to this boy she only asks this boy if he wants to buy something out of politeness and not because she's interested in selling anything because it's a closing time right so she doesn't pay much attention to this boy the boy realizes he doesn't even know what to buy he doesn't know what should I buy for this girl and at this moment everything becomes clear to this boy it's like an eye opener for him so there's a final realization the boy the boy slowly walks away from the stall feeling a deep sadness he stands alone in the dark and suddenly he understands what does he understand arabi was never magical it was just an ordinary market his love for Mangan sister was not real it was just a dream inside his head he feels foolish and embarrassed for believing something that was never true and this is the eye opener for this boy so the story ends with a powerful line what's the line gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity and my eyes burned with anguish and anger that means this closing remark means the boy realizes that his dreams were silly he feels angry at himself for believing in in such dreams such dreams he feels hurt because the world is not as magical as he thought so this moment is the boy's loss of innocence he grows up in this instant understanding that life is full of disappointments so in this manner what do we learn from this story here the story teaches four important thing one is the dreams versus reality the boy expected something wonderful but the reality was ordinary second growing up is always painful he learns that life is not always exciting or romantic romantic love can be an illusion he thought he loved mangan sister but it was just a fantasy infatuation adults don't understand his uncle and the people at the bazar do not care about his feelings so this is what we learn from the story here and finally the conclusion remark the story Arabi is about a boy who has big hopes but faces disappointment he learns that the world is not always magical and the dreams do not always come true this is a moment of growing up where he realizes that life is sometimes dull unfair and full of letdowns even though the story is sad but it is something everyone experiences at some point in life the moment when we realize that things are not as perfect as we imagined to be yes we cannot exactly imagine the way we thinks the life cannot be in the same manner so this is how I have tried my best to summarize the story Arabi which is in the syllabus of second semester BCA general English under Bangalore University and if you have any questions you can mail me at mkkesh Englishgmail.com subscribe the channel for more videos to come and like this video write about your your opinions your ideas about love infatuation and also share this video to your classmates to your friends so thank you so much for watching this video and stay in tune with MKkesh English
