Mastering Google Sheets for Data Visualization

all right so now that i've shown you how to do this in excel it's time to try this in google sheets which i know a lot of you uh use especially if you have apples and you want to pay for microsoft office uh extra the bit there so the difficulty is because microsoft owns microsoft office a lot of times you have to pay for the license for that and so google has made a variety of things google sheets google slides that are essentially microsoft office knockoffs uh and so they have a lot of the functionality but they're not quite as slick as some of what microsoft can do because they're they're paying for those kinds of things um but you'll notice uh the layouts are very similar so so here is a google sheet i have using the same using the same data that i used before on uh the excel file and you're gonna you'll notice that there are a lot of things that are very similar a lot of the look generally is kind of the same and that's that's intentional by google i assume so you'll want to go to insert similar to what we did with excel but you'll notice here things are different right you don't have that that nice little toolbar with video with images and those kinds of things but we're still doing the same thing we want to insert a chart here all right so similar to excel but again you'll notice that there's somewhat less in terms of your your options here we've pulled up uh the data they've given us this and you'll go to chart type and they've got a bunch of suggested things uh showing the data that they're using so we we already know from what we did with excel that we want to use a line chart uh and you'll notice that there's there's different things you can do here you can add data you can add another series you can switch your rows and columns a lot of a lot of what's going to come here though this this is not there's not all that much you can do here most of what's going to happen is going to come from this customize tab over here so things like chart style you can change your border um you can change your background color so if we do that uh we can change our border color we can make it white let's see we could change all right the series we want the line color to be maybe stand out a little bit better um you know all these all these different kinds of things chart style axes and titles so if you want to change the title let's say e title right see it puts it up there at the top you can also change your horizontal axis title months uh so obviously the text because this is now dark you're gonna have to change your your text text color white there you go right uh so there's a lot of things you can do under here in the customize again it's not quite as many options as you would get with excel but a lot of it is somewhat similar so legend we don't have a legend here horizontal axis vertical axis grid lines and ticks and that's about it so but you'll notice you can do the same kind of thing that we did with excel so let's say if we wanted to do double it will pick this up insert a chart let's go back to line chart hey look at that so we've got our line chart again um but again you're going to want to customize this make this look pretty right this is not this is not a pretty graph right now um either you've got to label your your two different series the two different years you need to give it a title you got to label your horizontal or vertical axis so all those things should be in here so when you're doing things in in google in sheets there are not quite as many options but again there's still some fiddling around that you can do and particularly as you think about the data that you want to be collecting or what you want to do let's see here edit chart you may want to look into a lot of these some of these other different kinds of graphs right it's like a stacked area chart could be interesting see let's see what's going to work well for for you and for this is not helpful right this is just this is just confusing and it doesn't actually do what you want it to do so look at the kinds of data and the kinds of presentation that will work well fiddle around with a couple of things uh yeah and see what's going to be most effective so there's some really interesting really interesting kinds of uh data charts that you can do uh here so this is actually a really interesting way of showing data the radar chart so it's got instead of having an x-axis right where we've got all of our months along the bottom here you'll notice that the months go around the circle and so basically you can see yeah it's a different way of visualizing data where most of the the numbers fall kind of in this area so it's just another way of visualizing it it's actually not a not a bad one given what we want to do so anyway there's a lot of different things you can do um the the layout is somewhat similar to what we we saw with excel but it's a little different and again if you get stuck with something or if you want to know how to do something with uh this google is your friend youtube is your friend there are other kinds of videos out there that will help you help you with this but i i would my goal is to get you to the point where you're you're proficient uh with this with this kind of thing and can can create this uh particular for it's especially for the poster but just in in general being able to visualize and create um appealing data sets uh is a really useful life skill so okay this wasn't as long because there are um there's so much overlap and similarity with what's going on in excel but hopefully that was at least helpful and can kind of get you off the ground with this kind of thing so try and have some fun with this
