Lesson 1 - May 7 - Understanding the Devil's Influence and Works

Those of you who are with us this evening, this is a brand spanking new class. It's going to be on the devil and his works, and I'll probably re-emphasize that a little later in our study, but it's an important class because we really need to know what the devil, who the devil is, what he does so that we can better prepare ourselves for interactions with him. And there are going to be some interactions for sure. And so we'll go ahead and share our screen and see what we've got here. Let's see. Let's see. All righty. Okay, we're going to, first of all, this is kind of an introductory night, but the goal of this study is to help us to follow, let me change my screen here so I can see better. There we go. I think I came out of it. Let me reshare. All righty. Thank you so much. Can you see it? Let me try again. Yeah, we can see it. I can see it too. Can you see the lesson? Can you see the lesson text? Yes, we see the note. Because I couldn't see it. I can't see it where I am. Let me see if I can. Yes, it says that I'm sharing my screen, but I can't see it. So let me see if I can get it up. Let me stop the share and go back in, see if I can retrieve. Thank you. Okay, there you go. There we go. Okay. Okay. And the goal of this study, can all of you see that? Yes. Okay. Thank you. The goal of this study is to help us understand and follow the directive of the Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 2.11, that we be aware of the devil and his devices, schemes, tactics, methods, and so on. And this is the Bible verse that we'll derive our study from. And it says, lest Satan should take advantage of us, for we are not ignorant of his devices. Second Corinthians 2.11. Is this a familiar verse to a lot of us? This is pretty familiar, isn't it? Yes. And of course, it's the Apostle Paul encouraging the Corinthian brothers. that he and others were on top of things regarding Satan, and they were aware, and they were not ignorant of Satan's devices, tricks, schemes, etc. And so, also, let's see, let me see if I can get my technology to agree with me here. here we go and then also the goal of another uh area of goal in this study is to also realize that we aren't fighting against flesh and blood but against principalities against powers rulers of the darkness of this age and the spiritual host of wickedness in heavenly places and it says and this is the verse that that's derived from Well, we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places, Ephesians 6.12. And so, okay. So what is the name of this study? I have mentioned it before, but I'm going to refresh everybody's memory. For those of you that came in. a little later to this stream. This study is titled The Devil and His Works, and it goes without saying this is a very important study for Christians. It's not as glamorous a study as some of the other studies, but it's a necessary study and one that I think all Christians should be exposed to. What are some of the questions that will be answered in this study? First and foremost, who is the devil? What are some other biblical names for the devil? What are some of the characteristics of the devil? Is the devil a created being? Is the devil a spirit? Can the devil take on different forms? And I know the wheels are turning in the class. I can hear the wheels turning because many of us have many ideas about this and we're certainly going to get into these questions. Let's continue on. What are some other questions? Is God using the devil for his purposes? Can the devil do anything that he wants to? Very good questions, aren't they? What are some other questions that will be answered in this study? What are the devil's objectives? Does the devil work alone? What fate awaits the devil and his angels? What methods does the devil use against mankind? How can we be victorious over the devil? As we enter into this study, one truth is clear. We are currently in spiritual warfare against the devil. Class, when you think about spiritual warfare, what does that mean to you? The idea of spiritual warfare, what does that mean? Anyone? I think it's a challenge that we're all facing with just the way things are happening in the world to not necessarily fall victim but not to be so negative ourselves in our way of thinking because sometimes I will talk to people and they just sound so negative as if though they can't do anything about it and I'm like what about prayer? you know, what does Jesus say, that type of thing. And I think that is part of the spiritual warfare, in my opinion. Yes, definitely. And of course, our spiritual warfare, we have an opponent, we have someone who is against us, and that is the devil. And many times when we live in this physical realm, sometimes it's easy to get lost in the physical. and lose sight of the spiritual. You know, that's on both sides of the ledger, whether against spiritually good influences or spiritually evil influences. But if we don't get anything else from this study, we have to, this truth is evidently clear that we are currently in spiritual warfare against the devil. Not going to be next week, not going to be a year from now. We are currently in spiritual warfare against the devil. So let us together learn all that Christ would have us to know about the devil and his ways. And this, of course, follows the Apostle Paul's directive that we cited earlier. Who is the devil? That's a pretty sinister looking... Fellow, isn't Yeah, but it doesn't always go by the looks. Yeah, yes, that's one image of the devil, isn't it? Yeah, but it doesn't always go by the looks. Yeah, he don't look like that. He's just like us. I don't know why they pictured him like that because, you know. Yeah. Yeah, that's one of the images that man has concocted regarding the devil. And I have heard it said that if the devil looked like this image here, he'd be easy to stay away from. Exactly. He'd be easy to stay away from if he indeed looked like that. He'd be easy to avoid, wouldn't he? Right. But yes, this is just one image. Of course, nobody has seen the devil. Right. Everybody has seen the devil on the physical side of things. You know, we've seen his influences. We've seen those who are under his influence, things like that. But let's carry on and this discussion will be broadened. Brother Harris. Yes, go ahead. Go ahead. This is Valerie. I think they make the devil look like that to make us think that, you know, if I look you know, like myself or I look good, then, you know, I'm okay. Not thinking that sometimes, you know, the devil looks like us. And we don't want to think about that. We don't think of the devil is some ugly depiction. So, you know, of course, I'm not going to fall for that. Right. Forgetting that we fall for things that. You know, when we see somebody that looks just like me and talks like me and acts, but is cunning. So, you know, that's how we are being deceived, if I may say so. And we're going to really break down what you just said, Sister Valerie, in our list of questions that I presented at the beginning of the class. That was one of them. Can Satan take on different forms? and his characteristics. We're going to learn a lot about the devil so that we'll be equipped to handle encounters with him. And they're going to come. It's not if they come, they're going to come. And so why not equip ourselves for this? These are a couple of other images. Amen. And it's hundreds of them out there. I just presented these along with the last one. And these two, I think, are the only three that I selected for our class tonight. But we've all seen artist renderings of the devil, but haven't we? We've all seen all types of images of the devil. And who is the devil? That's the question. Who is the devil? Can I get somebody to read this for us? Read it. The devil was an angel, one of the heavenly hosts who rebelled against God and was the leader of a group of angels who also rebelled against God. The devil and his angels were defeated by the archangel Michael and cast to the earth. The devil and all angels have free moral agency. just like humans. Thank you. Thank you so much, Sister Houston. And that's it in a nutshell. The devil was an angel. He was one of the heavenly hosts at one time, and he rebelled against God, and he apparently instigated an uprising in heaven and got a lot of the angels to follow after him. and he became their leader. And here's a question for you. What does free moral agency mean? As I stated there in that statement, the devil and all angels have free moral agency, just like humans. What does the term free moral agency mean? Anyone? I guess you have free will, pretty much right. Okay. You can decide. It's not like we're robots or anything. We're made to decide. True, true. Anyone else? The law doesn't force us. No. So you get to. You absolutely right, Sister Gladys. Go ahead, Sister Beverly. I think it's also the free will. It is the free will, but it's the free will to make the right and wrong decisions. Yes, yes. You put the morality aspect in there. And so you have the right, you have the. It's up to you to make the decision whether to do right or to do wrong. Very good. Very good. Very good input. Anybody else want to add to this? What's your take on this thought free moral agency? OK, let's work. Will you add the word agency? That's that's to me saying a little bit. more when you said agency. I don't know. The agency, that means like you are, you're representing something. And an agent. You could be good or bad, I guess. You could be good or bad. Yes. And an agent embraces a task, doesn't he? Right. An agent. He embraces a task. And, uh, but we'll we'll we'll we'll delve into it a little deeper here let me continue on i got another question for you how many angels does the devil have anybody want to anybody know the answer to that you got the floor if anybody knows the answer to that you got the floor brother harris giving you the floor. Okay. Those are two interesting questions, aren't they? Of course, we're probably more familiar with the free moral agency thought than we are how many angels does the devil have? It might be a question that we really never ask ourselves. How many angels does the devil have? Are there any out there? Are there any amongst us tonight that have actually thought about that question? How many angels does the devil have? We know he has angels, but how many? Has anyone ever thought about that question? How many angels does the devil have? So I don't know the answer to that, but it really has me thinking on that because I really don't know. I never thought about that. It's good. It is a very interesting question. And in this particular study on the devil, we're going to try to delve into the ins and outs of the devil so that we can get a better understanding of how he came to be and everything. We need to know as much about the devil as we can. In the sports realm, when you're preparing for an opponent, you look at film. you study tapes, you look at things of that nature, and you try to get as much info on your opponent as you can so that when you go to battle, you'll be prepared. And that's why this is so important. The more we can learn about the devil, the more we'll be in a position to face him and to face him victoriously. uh when the uh when the when the question arises or when and it's going to happen it's going to happen that confrontation is going to happen and questions and things are going to happen but but uh now i see you brother gladys and uh and i'll get to you sister green you had a comment go ahead i i see you sister gladys i'll get to you well here sister green now of course when the devil was cast out, didn't he take some angels with him. And that was mentioned here in our description. Oh, okay. I didn't see it. The devil and his angels. And he became the leader of a group of angels who also rebelled against God. And so he was the ringleader, Sister Green, for certain. And then he got some other angels to rebel. against God as well. And then the devil and his angels were defeated by the Archangel Michael. and cast to earth. So yes, you're exactly right. You're exactly right. And in our description of the devil, as we can see here, that's precisely what happened, that he did have a band of angels who latched on to his ideologies, and to their discredit, they latched on to Satan, but to no avail. The archangel Michael took care of things, and the devil and his angels were cast. to the earth and then uh and then they're they're they've been wreaking havoc ever since but but uh yeah thank you sister green but yeah you were you were right on point there and uh uh sister gladys i get right to you hold on hold hold that thought just a second let me can let me go on i want to uh free moral agency would someone like to read that for us In regard to this free moral agency. I can read it. Okay, please do. Free moral agency is the ability of a person to make choices, specifically moral choices, based on their understanding of right and wrong, and to be held accountable for those actions. It combines the concept of free will, the capacity to choose, and moral responsibility, being held accountable. for those choices. Thank you. Thank you. That in essence is the way a free moral agency is defined. And so it's one's individual choice. It's all about choices, isn't it? And as one of the sisters said, God isn't going to twist our arm. He could. He could. He could make us follow him, but God wants individuals who choose to follow him. who make intentional choices that are in harmony with his will. And we have this capacity of free moral agency, as was cited, as does the angels and their heavenly host. So they also had the right to exercise free moral agency. But yeah, it is all about choices and specifically moral choices. And based on one's understanding of right and wrong, as our beloved Sister Gardner read. And Sister Gladys, you want to come in now with your thought? On that previous slide, I had a question. Sure. Let me. Let me. Yes. Uh-huh. Uh-huh. Okay, it says the devil and his angels were defeated by the archangel Michael and cast to the earth. Now, I know it doesn't give a specific, I guess that's the way the verse reads, but the serpent in the Garden of Eden, isn't the serpent considered the devil? Yes, uh-huh. And we're going to delve into that when we get into different names for the devil, and we're going to really break that down. You're exactly right, sister. But hold that thought here, because we're going to get into that when we get into the question of what other biblical names does the devil have. And you're exactly right, Sister Herring, and it goes way back. That's where it originated in the garden. And so this, the devil has been wreaking havoc since the garden, and he's still wreaking havoc. So thank you very much. You're exactly right. But we're going to delve into that and break that down a little deeper as we get deeper into our study, when we get into the area where, and it'll be approaching very soon. The reason I ask you that, brother, is because, you know, you talk to some people, but some people don't believe, they don't, they... they don't believe in God because they've had such bad experiences in their lives. And this to me is just a crucial point because we can help to explain to people that we are all free moral agents. And even though the devil was in the beginning, Adam and Eve had a choice. And some of the things that happen to people is not of their cause. but it could be because of somebody else. True. You know, just recently I had someone to talk to me about how they were abused as a child. And it really, this, this, what you're teaching is really. I think it's going to help me with me trying to help that person. So anyway, thank you. Thank you, Sister Heron. I think this is going to be a beneficial study for all of us. And I would love for all Christians to be exposed to a study on the devil. As I cited, the more we can learn about the devil, the better equipped we're going to be down the road. and we'll be able to not. get caught in his web, so to speak, and not get tripped up in this Christian race. Of course, those out there in the world, non-Christians are already within in his web, and we don't want to end up there. So the more we can learn about the devil and his schemes, trickery, devices, etc., the better off we're going to be for sure. And thank you for that comment, all of you. Thank you for your comments. But yes, go ahead. I'm sorry. I know that we have when people think that bad things happen to us and that God should just step in and prevail. But remember, God didn't say that we will always have good times or good things will happen all the times. Sometimes he puts us in certain situations. in order for us to learn something from it, and we can teach the other person, if that makes any sense. That makes a lot of sense, and I'm sure everybody in the class can relate to that. Sister Valerie, thank you. We've all got a story to tell. We all have challenges in life. We all have difficult people to deal with. We've got difficult situations in our day-to-day life sometimes to deal with, and God does place us in certain situations so that we can be a blessing. so that we can be a blessing. And sometimes God may use us to slow somebody down who's tripping, for lack of a better word. He might use us to assist someone in getting to know him. And so you're exactly right. Sometimes when bad things happen, God is shaping and molding us and preparing us for something for his purpose. for his purpose. And so we should always see it that way. And as we cited at the very beginning of this study, we're not battling against flesh and blood. Many times we get mad at a person, a human being, and mentally we're still in the physical realm when we need to understand that our battle is not with flesh and blood, but it's with the devil. And we are currently, let me reemphasize that, we as of right now are currently in battle, spiritual warfare with the devil. Here's the other question. Here's a comment on the other question that was presented to us. The Bible does not reveal the exact number of angels that the devil have. Some believe that it could have been as many as a third of the angels based on what is revealed in Revelation 12 verses 3 and 4. It appears to be a vast number, but the exact count we just don't know. And yes, some believe it could possibly have been a third. of the angels of the heavenly host. And that's quite a following, if accurate. Let's go further and see if we can find out here. This is Revelation 12, verses 3 and 4. It reads, And another sign appeared in heaven. Behold, and I'm reading from the New King James Version. And another sign appeared in heaven. Behold, a great fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns and seven diadems on his head. Verse 4. His tail drew a third of the stars of heaven and threw them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman who was ready to give birth to devour her child as soon as it was born. and obviously in revelation this is figurative language it's symbolic language and not literal but many and when we had a great study uh with the brother mccleskey senior in the book of revelation i'm not sure if we delved into this a whole lot but uh But there are some that believe this term, the third of the stars of heaven, is referring to the devil, the devil's third, the third that followed the devil, the third of the angels that followed the devil. And I'm still studying this particular avenue, and I'll give you an update when I receive more. But that's just one thought out What we need to keep and embrace is that nobody really knows the number of angels that the devil has. We don't really know how many angels are in heaven. I have heard it said that it's billions, but that's just, that's just, the jury's out on that thought. You know, it could be, it wouldn't surprise me if it's, we do know it's a number that no man could name. So it may be even more than that. But anyway, in answer to that question, does anybody know how many devils the angel has? No, no, we don't know for a certainty how many angels he had. And even if he has a third, let's say that this third idea is true. Let's say it's true for the sake of argument. We still even then don't know how much a third was. So so just food for thought. We do know that it was a vast number that of angels that followed Satan. Hey, Brother Hubie. Yes, go ahead. Go ahead, Brother Finch. Hey, first off, this is awesome. Thank you for for teaching this class and in this subject matter for that. for that um you know this is really good i want to go back to that free mortal agent piece that you were talking about because this is a great way to hook uh it's a great way to start this class um because we and most of my brothers and sisters in the class that made comment were spot on you know going all the way back to the garden of eden we we were created to be these free motor agents, right? Where I have to choose. And you know, they, they, There used to be this comedian back in the day that used to say, the devil made me do it, right? That's it, right? Okay, there we go. So even with that, that's false, right? Because we have the truth now. Like you mentioned, are we in a battle? Oh, yeah, yeah. It's the devil busy trying to take us off of the word and off of the way that... that the Lord has prepared for us, true. But he can't make you do anything. It's a choice. And I know you'll get into the very different tactics and schemes that the devil has for us, but we got to realize that at the end of the day, it's a choice. And that choice is contingent on how spiritually healthy we are. That's very important to recognize that. Because if we're not, spiritually feeding ourselves, we don't have a healthy diet spiritually, then we will falter. Okay. And that's, and the devil, he's shrewd. He knows the word. He knows it. He was up there. He knows what's going on. So he will, you know, when he see those fallacies and he sees those loopholes, he will take advantage. And that's where we become victim to some of these things that happen. even to the point we will even blame God for some of the reasons that we are in some of the valleys that we're in. So that's, I wanted to bring that out that we are free mortal agents and the devil can't make you do anything. It's up to us to make that choice to say, hey, I'm gonna step out on my marriage or hey, I'm going to go get drunk or abuse of substance or whatever that is. So that's very important. Thank you so much, Brother Avery. You hit the nail on the head, and certainly we will be delving into a lot of what you said in detail a little further down in our study, but thank you so much. I just feel privileged to be in this position to lead this study, and I too am learning. I too am learning, and so we're learning together. Thank you so much, Brother Avery. I don't want anyone to think that Brother Harris is an authority on the devil because Brother Harris is not an authority on the devil. Brother Harris, as you, we're all learning together so that we can equip ourselves to... Be ready when those confrontations occur, and they're going to occur. I mean, that's inevitable. The confrontations with the devil are going to take place, and they may be even taking place right now when we're streaming. We may be having some technical difficulties, or we might be having something going on in the background that's tugging at us. But these confrontations are going to occur. The more we can learn about the devil, the more, as was cited, the better equipped we'll be to handle what is sure to come, and that is confrontation. And so the devil is a real being that I don't think anybody will argue that. And the devil has some power, but as we'll discover and as we'll elaborate on deeper into our study, the devil can only do what the Lord allows him to do. And we'll discover scriptures that support that. And, but he is a powerful being. He is powerful. Yes, go ahead. Go ahead. This is Sister Washington. Thank you. Thank you for the class. Before you go on and speaking about the devil, as I'm listening and. listening it appears that even be way before um satan addressed adam and eve in the garden the the the spiritual fight in heaven and a third of the angels followed took had to follow the devil even the angels were able to have free more they had choices too yes they god didn't make them choose him. He allowed them to make choices. So even in heaven, the angels had choices. Absolutely. Absolutely. And as was cited, thank you so much, Sister Stephanie. And as was cited, the devil, the angels, just like men, just like mankind, are free moral agents. We can choose to do right. or we can choose to do wrong. As our beloved brother Avery said, you know, if we follow the devil, it's because we choose to follow the devil. We can just as easily choose not to follow him. And that's obviously, as New Testament Christians, that's where we want to be. We don't want to be under the influence of the devil because it's detrimental to our soul's salvation. We all want to go to heaven. I don't think it's anybody in this study that will say, I don't want to go to heaven. We all want to go to heaven and we want to position ourselves and equip ourselves to that end. And so thank you so much again, Sister Washington. The more we can equip ourselves and the more we can find out about the devil and his trickery. Oh, he's he knows all the tricks in the business. And and we can't lean on what. The comedians Flip Wilson used to say, the devil made me do it. That's not going to cut it when we stand before the judgment seat. We're not going to have an out like that when we stand before the judgment seat. We're going to be held accountable for our decisions made as free moral agents. And I don't think anybody will refute what has been given on the board on the screen here. The devil is powerful. We know he's a powerful being, and God has allowed him certain liberties that we'll delve into later in our study. The devil is not a figment of man's imagination. I see a lot of people in our world don't believe the devil is real. They believe that the devil is a figment of man's imagination. They really do. And It's a lot of people that believe that the devil, and this is a truth, that the devil is not a cartoon character, for sure. We showed some illustrations earlier, and I was an artist back in my college days. I was a commercial artist. And so I could come up with an image of the devil. Or anyone, for that matter, any one of us in this study could come up with our own image of the devil based on what we think he could have, could look like or blah, blah, blah. But in essence, the devil is not a cartoon character, but some some see him as such and they can't get beyond that. The devil is not a joke. Some people think they use the devil flippantly in conversation, and it would behoove us to take the devil seriously because our soul is at stake. If we allow ourselves to get brought under the umbrella of the devil's a joke and make a joke, the devil can't hurt you. The devil's this. The devil's not that. We run the risk of positioning ourselves to put our souls in jeopardy. And as I said, I don't think it's anyone in this stream that doesn't want to go to heaven. We all want to see God's face in peace. The devil is not a myth. And surprisingly, as I said, it's people out there that believe. And the devil loves it. He loves for people to think he's not amiss. He loves all these thought processes that I've cited here, the last four in particular. He wants people to think that he's a figment of mankind's imagination. He wants people to think that he's just a cartoon character. He wants people to think that he's not a joke. You know, he wants people to think that he is not a myth, you know, because if he does that, you know, if he gets people to to to not believe that he is a real being, he has the upper hand. And of course, we'll discover that as we delve deeper and deeper into this study. I mean, this is some interesting stuff. And like I said, I wish all Christians could be exposed to a study of the devil. And so that we can learn all that we can about him. Can I make a comment? Yes, please. Please do. That's why it's so important that we allow God's word to dwell in us, as they say, richly. Because, you know, like you've mentioned before, it's a war against the spirit and the flesh. And it's a... it's like it's a constant battle and that battle is like who's gonna win you know you know are you gonna allow Satan to win are you gonna allow you know Christ to reign in you you know and it's that constant battle and that's why we have to stay close you know to each other you know our brothers and sisters, you know, when you feel Satan on you. It could be a text. Send a text, Brother Hubie, Sister Sylvia, whoever. Pray for me. I need prayer. I need prayer. You know, Satan is looking at me. You know, call on our sisters and our brothers to keep Satan where he will flee. You know, he'll flee from you, you know, but we got to keep the spiritual in that it overpowers. the evil you know it's it's and thank you thank you uh this topic is i mean much needed and i appreciate it so very much thank you thank you sister green and and and you're exactly right and and we'll be we'll be delving into ways we can equip ourselves uh indeed in more detail i've just slightly skimmed over some things and as have as have we all but uh we'll we'll If the Lord is willing, we'll be getting deeper and deeper into some of the methods, some of the devil's methods versus some of our protections that we can put in place to guard our hearts and minds against his attacks, which are sure to come. And like I said, as long as the devil's got people thinking he's a cartoon character and that he's a joke and that he's a myth and that he's a fictional character, he's OK with that. Because he can sneak up on them and the unsuspecting folks and have his way with them. But the whole idea of this study is to help us educate ourselves so that we, when those attacks come, and as I cited, they're going to come, that we'll be ready for them and prepared to handle ourselves admirably before God as we defeat the devil. The devil, and this is the truth, the devil is not a made-up story or a lie that religion uses. to control people. He's not a made-up story or a lie that religion uses to control people. The devil is a real being. The devil is powerful. And we need to grasp that and understand that. And I think this study will help us to do just that. Hey, Brother Yubi, can I add a real quick item? Please, please, Brother Barry. I want to make the connection. of our free moral agency with the character of God. The Bible teaches us that God is love, and love requires a choice. God could have raised up rocks to worship him. They wouldn't have had a choice. But we see in God's character, in his creation, even with the angels, like you said, that we have a choice. in serving him or not. So we see the character of God in our free moral agency, that God loves us enough to allow us to choose whether or not we're going to love him back. I just wanted to add that connection to God's character with our free moral agency. Thank you so much, Brother Barry, right on point. And thank you for that comment. It has definitely supported what we've studied this far. Time is getting away from us. What does the name devil mean? I'll go down through this real quick. The name devil is from the Greek word diabolos, which translates to slanderer or accuser. The English word diabolic, and we're all familiar with that, diabolic, is usually associated with something sinister, diabolic, you know, ultimately stems from the Greek word Diabolos. What are some other biblical names for the devil? And it's about 12 after, so before we delve off into this, this will start our run of questions that I cited at the beginning of the class, and I'll run through them again, the questions that we'll be covering in this study at the beginning of each class, so that we'll kind of see where we're going. And if we need to ask some questions to it, we can. But this is where we'll start off. What are some of the other biblical names for the devil? We want to know all that we can know about the devil so that we can be prepared for his attacks, as was said earlier, that are sure to come and may be taking place right now for some of us. Some of us might being the in a little hand-to-hand situation right now with the devil. But that said, I'll leave this thought with you right there. We'll stop right there.
