Using ReveRig with Characters of Separate Meshes

Introduction

  • This tutorial demonstrates how to use ReveRig with characters whose faces are composed of different meshes.
  • Example: Character "Jameela"
    • Made up of multiple meshes
    • Equipped with 52 shape keys (ARKit system for facial motion capture)
    • Meshes: eyebrows, eyelashes, eyes, face, upper and lower teeth
    • Missing mesh: tongue

Initial Setup

  • Separate meshes
  • Alternative option: Merge secondary meshes to the primary one (Ctrl + J)
  • This tutorial covers keeping meshes separate

Creating the Face Rig

  • Use the ReveRig add-on
  • Place the facial rig next to the face of the character
  • Rename the facial rig based on the character

Tying the Rig to Meshes

  • ReveRig shows 5 main fields
  • Our character has 6 different meshes
  • Mandatory Fields:
    • Main mesh: face
    • Eyes: eye mesh
    • Tongue: leave blank if missing
  • Insert upper and lower teeth meshes

Creating Drivers

  • Proceed with the creation of drivers
  • Check that the drivers have been created correctly
  • Movement not yet applied to eyelashes and eyebrows
  • Create drivers for these meshes:
    • Clear fields
    • Insert eyebrows (leave eye field empty)
    • Insert eyelashes in tongue field

Verifying Drivers

  • Verify that eyelashes and eyebrows are linked to the facial rig

Retargeting Animation

  • Select source mesh and facial rig as target
  • Set frame offset for transferred animation
  • Click retarget animation button
  • Verify the transferred animation correctness

Final Adjustments

  • Insert keyframe to bring the face back to Rest Position
  • Modify facial animation as desired (Example: animating Amp Value field for jaw open shape key)
