Program Overview

  • Intended for students aiming for initial certification in Secondary Education (grades 7-12) with a concentration in Social Studies Education.
  • Major declaration required in one of the following: Africana Studies, Anthropology, Economics, History, Latin American Studies, Political Science, Sociology, or Urban Studies.
  • Student teaching eligibility requires:
    • Economics: Minimum GPA of 2.75
    • Other areas: Minimum GPA of 3.0
    • Grade B in SEYS 363
    • GPA of 3.0 in SEYS courses

Coursework Requirements

  • 21 credits in History and Geography (including 2 US History and 2 NON-US History courses)
  • 1 course in Economics
  • 1 course in Political Science
  • 12 credits in a single Social Science discipline outside the major

Additional Requirements for History Majors

  • 1 Economics Course
  • 1 Political Science Course
  • 12 credits in a single Social Science discipline (Anthropology, Economics, Political Science, Sociology)
    • At least one course should include "Geography" in the title.

Requirements for Majors other than History

  • 21 credits in History and Geography needed.
  • Recommended to complete a minor in History.
  • Option to fulfill requirements without a History Minor:
    • 4 courses in US and Non-US History/World Studies
    • 9 additional credits in History and Geography

New York State Teaching Licensure Requirements

  1. Certification Exams: Educating All Students (EAS) + Content Specialty Test (CST) in social studies.
  2. New York State Certification Workshops:
    • Child Abuse Identification and Reporting (NYS Mandated Reporter)
    • School Violence Prevention and Intervention (SAVE)
    • DASA Training (Dignity for All Students Act)
