Lighting and Projection in Beetlejuice

I'm lighting designer Ken Posner and I'm projection designer Peter Nick greeting and welcome to the Winter Garden theater and to Betelgeuse the musical what what I bring in the tool box is the ability to texture and sculpt and reveal actors in an interesting way giving them shape and highlight injecting very bright saturated colors the ability to really just shape and sculpt scenes respond to production numbers in sort of an energetic way that's that's really what my tool boxes because we have the ability to create form and create shape so a lot of cases in Beetlejuice its primary functions transformative we have a house and we want to turn it into a circus tent that's something that projection can do in a way that no other device can move us through sort of time and space as quickly they're approximately eight hundred lighting cues and Beetlejuice the music something that's happening on Betelgeuse in particular because it's a live-action comedy that's or almost a cartoon the integration between projection and sound and lighting and music all those systems are tied together so that any one cue might be the lighting department making projection and sound to happen or the sound Department making lighting happen but they all or the music department making it all that prime the orchestra pit so but in the end all those things are working together and the synchronizing all those things is something that has become a major part of making up [Music] one of the many things we have when we don't use toolbox is internally built light in I can put transform machinery in many many different ways and it's just sort of tucked in nooks and crannies as you go around the set here you can see one of the many many many corners of the set where the lighting in the video are mixing in order to kind of create a unified look probably everything we're seeing here is much closer than an audience member would be but for example you can see this tiny little detail here of these chasing snakes are all projected from over 150 feet away if you can see here this sort of surface lighting that colors this trend orange is also projection that's cut specifically to only hit that tiny architectural detail [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music]
