Overview
Coach Shayain explains the different types of golf clubs found in a beginner's golf bag and provides guidance on when to use each club during a round.
Understanding Club Types
- The putter is used on the green and sometimes on the fringe to roll the ball into the hole.
- Wedges (P for pitching wedge, S for sand wedge, L for lob wedge, and others like U or G) are for high shots, such as going over obstacles near the green.
- The sand wedge (S) is commonly used by beginners for hitting high, short shots, especially from sand or close to the green.
- The pitching wedge (P) is used around the green when no major obstacles are present and to get the ball close to the hole.
- The angle of the club face determines trajectory: more open means higher, flatter means longer distance and lower flight.
Irons Usage
- Irons are numbered (9, 8, 7, 6, 5), with lower numbers (5) being longer and sending the ball further.
- Higher-numbered irons (8, 9) have more loft and are used for shorter, higher shots.
- Beginners should avoid using 3 and 4 irons due to difficulty.
- Example: Use a 5 iron from 150 yards and a 9 iron from 100 yards.
Woods and Hybrids
- The driver is the biggest club, used off the tee, but is difficult for beginners and may be avoided initially.
- Hybrids and woods (such as a 7 wood or 5 wood) are easier for beginners and help achieve distance with less risk of mistakes.
- Beginners are encouraged to try hybrids or woods before attempting to use a driver.
Club Selection Tips for Beginners
- Start with hybrids or woods, then use irons (avoiding 3 and 4), and rely on wedges for high shots and the putter on the green.
- Focus on using the sand wedge (S) and pitching wedge (P) to navigate close-range and high shots.
- Use the putter for final strokes on the green.
Equipment Guidelines
- Golfers are allowed 14 clubs in their bag; borrowed sets typically comply with this rule.
- Knowing basic club use helps beginners feel more confident starting, playing mid-round, and finishing around the hole.
