Cerebral Veins Lecture Notes

Overview

  • Discusses the superficial and deep veins of the cerebrum.
  • Both types of veins drain into the dural venous sinuses.

Deep Veins of the Cerebrum

  • Great Cerebral Vein
    • Drains into the straight sinus.
    • Two major sets of tributaries:
      • Internal Cerebral Veins
        • Associated with the thalamus and choroid plexus of the lateral and third ventricles.
        • Travel posteriorly to unite and form the great cerebral vein.
      • Basil Veins
        • Associated with midbrain structures.
        • Extend posteriorly and drain into the great cerebral vein.

Superficial Venous Drainage

  • Groups of Veins
    • Superior Cerebral Veins
      • Extend along the lateral surface superiorly.
      • Drain into the superior sagittal sinus located within the falx cerebri.
    • Superficial Middle Cerebral Vein
      • Travels within the lateral (Sylvian) fissure.
      • Drains into three different sinuses:
        • Via Superior Anastomotic Vein: Drains into the superior sagittal sinus.
        • Via Inferior Anastomotic Vein: Travels inferiorly to drain into the transverse sinus.
        • Extends anteriorly to drain into the cavernous sinus.
