Donning PPE

  • Sequence for Donning PPE:
    1. Perform hand hygiene
    2. Gown: Slide arms in, use thumb inserts if available, secure by tying at the back
    3. Mask or Respirator:
      • For face masks: Place ear loops over ears, adjust nose piece, and pull under chin
      • For N95 respirators:
        • Hold with the front touching the inside of the hand
        • Place over nose, mouth, and chin
        • Use one hand to hold, other to adjust straps (top strap above ears, bottom strap below ears)
        • Ensure straps are not twisted
        • Perform seal test:
          • Inhale sharply to check seal
          • Exhale to check for leaks
          • Adjust as needed for proper seal
    4. Goggles or Face Shield: Apply over eyes, secure straps
    5. Perform hand hygiene again
    6. Gloves: Pull gloves over hands, extend cuffs over gown sleeves

Doffing PPE

  • Sequence for Doffing PPE:
    1. Gloves:
      • Avoid touching the outside
      • Use one hand to remove the other glove, then slide a finger under the remaining glove to remove
    2. Gown:
      • Front and sleeves are contaminated, ties are clean
      • Untie or break ties, remove gown from thumbs, peel off by rolling inside out
    3. Perform hand hygiene
    4. Face Shield or Goggles:
      • Do not touch outside
      • Remove by lifting bands over the head
    5. Mask or Respirator:
      • Mask: Grasp ear loops to remove
      • Respirator: Remove outside patient area, grasping straps to lift over the head
