Hi everyone, this is Dr. Bramjot Kaur and it's been around three weeks since the NEET PG results were announced and I secured an All India rank of 98 in NEET PG 2024 from a rank of 87,000 in NEET PG 2023. So this video is going to be about how did I get this jump from a five-digit rank to a two-digit rank. So before I proceed further, I want to address this question that can an average student crack this exam with a good rank. The answer is absolutely yes.
Because me being one, I can assure you of the fact that it doesn't matter where you've done your MBBS from. It doesn't matter what kind of a student you were in your MBBS. It doesn't matter what kind of books you read in your MBBS.
The only thing that matters is how you take on your preparation from now on. Because what you do from now on will show up on the day of the exam. So that's the first thing.
to proceed with this uh i want to uh tell you that this is gonna be more about my story and i'll be covering the strategy in this video itself and um i want you to listen to it like a netflix episode and i think it will be interesting hopefully and if it's not please so uh starting uh from my neat ug preparation phase i started preparing for neat ug when i was in class 11th And just like any other aspirant, I too had dreamt of getting into a government college. And I worked hard for two years, but as the fate had it, I could not get into one. And I managed to get into a decent private college that was SSIMS Davangiri through Comet K counselling in 2016. So to be honest, at that point of time, I was a bit disappointed in myself and a bit shattered. Because my expectations were not met.
But you know, as life gets you more mature, I understood the fact that no rank or no college, be it government, be it private, can decide my worth. It's not going to decide what kind of a doctor I am going to be in the future. Okay, so I came into terms with this fact. And...
I stopped judging myself on the basis of the ranks and on the basis of the colleges. So that shift of mentality was important. And to further proceed with the things, so I got into MBBS and I was a pretty average student. Like, you know, I never topped any university exams. I was never a badge topper.
I was never a gold medalist. I used to get nausea and vomiting in every drug I took like most of the medical students. So I was pretty average and I had not read books like Harrison's or the so called standard books. But I liked to read and I don't even remember the names of the other standard books.
One standard book that I read was Robbins for pathology because I liked pathology as a subject. So that was the only standard book that I read in my MBBS time. Okay, so then when I got into internship, I had no plans of preparing for NEET PG.
So like many people, I had the same thing that I will have fun for a year, then I will see next year and then see what I have to do in life. So I did not prepare for NEET PG and with first attempt my rank was around 87 only. Then I got back home, my home is in Delhi. And then also I did not have the motivation to start preparing for NEET PG.
So in fact, I was very curious to know that how things work in a government setup. I wanted to know that how other doctors at my level, you know, that were MBBS as well, were able to manage patients at their level, okay, in a government setup. So I started applying for jobs in Delhi only and luckily I got into one hospital, into one government hospital and I worked as a non-acad JR in pediatrics for like 7-8 months.
Then at my second attempt of NEET PG, I used to go to give papers without any education. Again I got a rank of 87,000 only. So at that point of time, I thought to myself that if I...
give an honest attempt at it if uh i try to give it give my all uh to this exam then i i was pretty sure that isse toh mai kuch better hi kar sakte hoon ki ye 87000 se toh kuch better hi last if I give an honest attempt at it. So it was a bit of a hard decision for me to quit my job but I left my job and I sat to study on June 5th 2023 to be precise. So when I started preparing I never had a goal that I want to be a ranker, I want to be a topper, I want an under 100 rank. No, this was never my goal.
My only goal used to be that every day my knowledge should be better than what it was yesterday. I should be knowing stuff. I should be knowing things that I did not know yesterday. Okay, so I was reading to attain more knowledge in whatever time I could, in whatever time I was provided to prepare for.
And every day I used to get up, I used to tell to myself that I will learn something new today. So I am a very big fan of 3 idiots and I quote a lot of examples from them. So actually I used to think like that that I just have to get a rank which is better than that 87000. And I need to attain more knowledge and I need to be better at my knowledge than I was yesterday. Because it will help me as a doctor and tomorrow it will help me only to see my patients better.
So that was the only motivation that I had because students often ask me that, ma'am, how did you keep yourself motivated? And how did you take a drop and, you know, quit your job and just go for it? So this is my answer that, you know, just read that because you want to.
Do not read that you want to get a rank or you want to get into a college or, you know, do not read because the norm has it. No, just read for your own self. Okay.
My mom is a librarian and she tells me to make books your friend. Make books your friends. They'll never betray you.
So, yeah. So, don't judge me on this. But I'll tell you the same thing.
Because, you know, you'll like it. Every day you'll get to know new things. You'll get to know stuff that you didn't know before. So, it'll be good.
Okay. so that that is one thing that i want you uh to understand and uh uh then okay so yeah so that is how i started preparing for neat pg uh then i want to share the strategy that i followed when i was preparing so first things first you know that getting into that mental zone is very important uh i mean that you know you need to um have that mentality that you deserve this okay Never ever underestimate yourself because you are no less than any other person on this planet. Okay, so you deserve everything in this world and you know that you can do this because I have more faith and belief in you right now than you have in yourself because I have been through the same phase. Even I have been through a lot of uncertainties.
I didn't know that I was going to get this rank. Okay, there were times when... I felt like giving up.
There were times when everything was not going good or accordingly. So, you just need to get into the mental zone that you are okay and it will pass and you are going to do very good. Because you have come this far and it is a big deal to come this far. To be honest, many people dream to reach the level that we all are at right now. So just be grateful and try to give it, give in your all and give in your 100% and nothing can stop you from coming till here.
Nothing. Okay. So getting into that mental zone, a bit of that positive attitude and a little bit of faith and belief is what is required.
That's it. So that is the first thing. Second thing, consistency. You know, average students like me cannot do without consistency. Okay.
In my last one year of preparation, I do not remember a single day when I did not pick up my books. So, like I said before, I too had a lot of bad days. I too had days where I totally felt like giving up. There were days when I did not feel like getting up from my bed at all. And there were days when I was just like, I can't do this.
But on those days, I reminded myself that just pick up the book for 15 minutes. Even if you're not able to do it today, it's fine. But please don't break your flow. On Snapchat, I make streaks and I don't want to break them. So, don't break them in your studies.
Don't use Snapchat now. Break the streaks of your studies but don't break them. Okay? You should be very regular in picking up your books. Because some days, even if I used to waste the whole day, if it used to be 11 o'clock on my clock, if it used to be 11 pm on my clock, I used to make sure that I'm using that one hour left to make that day count.
So you need to make everyday count, okay? Making everyday count is very important, right? Okay, and if anybody is telling you that take this shortcut, read this in 3 months, do this in 3 months.
If you are a topper, if you have been a topper, if you have been a good reader, you don't need to read a lot, then that's completely fine. That is amazing. But you know, if you are a student like me, who is starting from the basics, you know, who is starting from a bit of scratch, then for you...
please don't take any shortcuts because shortcuts are not getting us anywhere. Okay, so I need you to be consistent and I need you to make everyday count. Okay, so that is important. Now, talking about the resources that I followed. So I followed only one app throughout that was Cerebellum.
I did not have any other app, I did not have Marrow because a lot of people ask me, ma'am what did you follow for? Did you follow Marrow for question banks or GTs? No, I followed only Cerebellum and what did my day look like?
So I used to follow the live classes very religiously. Like I used to sit at 5.30, I used to sit every day at 5.30 for the live classes. Why?
Because they helped me in maintaining consistency. And they helped me keep in check that I have to give this subject only for a few days. I should be able to pass in 4 days according to life classes. I should be able to pass in a few days. I will give the test on this day.
So, you know that full organization used to happen in my mind that this is how I will do it. So, I didn't have to put extra effort or much effort from my own self into making timetables and making schedules and all. So, this happened in the evening.
Because life classes used to run till late, like 12-1. So, I used to sleep accordingly and I never used to compromise on my sleep. I used to take 7-8 hours. The next day, I used to get up and in the morning, I used to revise the previous day notes. I used to revise what I had studied in the previous day notes.
And I used to do some MCQs if the time used to permit. I used to do PYQs or something. Now, one thing that I want to tell is...
I divided my readings into essay sections. Like, you know, my first read was the longest read. Okay, so it took me around two months to complete my first read.
And, you know, in the first read, try to know concepts. Okay, try to read more and do less of questions. But you can do as you please. But what I followed was, my first read was more theory focused. Okay.
and my second second read onwards were more question focused okay so that's how i went about and uh so firstly took the longest time around like two months uh two two and a half months and after that in the second read i started doing more mcqs okay uh so from second read onwards i used to read less of theory and do more of mcqs about mcqs also uh i'll come to uh in some time okay So, yeah, so third, so yeah, I was talking about my routine, right? So, mornings went like that and on the test days, so tests, tests, so I used to give, I never used to miss any test. But I used to give every, every test, okay? Like be it SWT, that is subject wise test, be it a PYQ test, be it a GT, be it anything, whatever test was scheduled, I used to give that. And, you know, just...
don't be in a notion that you need to complete all of your syllabus before you sit for a GT or before you sit for a subject-wise test even. Like for example, you had given four days to pathology. If you're not able to complete and the fifth day you were supposed to give the test. If you're not able to complete pathology in four days, it doesn't matter.
You need to sit for that test. Okay, because that day when you're fully prepared will never come even on the day of your final exam. even on the day of NEET PG you will be like oh man this was left, I had to do this it's okay okay you can sit in the test according to what has happened because the syllabus will never be complete till the end it will not get completed so just forget about completing the syllabus do as much as you can Put 100% from your side, try that it is happening and just sit for the test.
It doesn't matter how much you have prepared for it, but just sit for the test because a lot of theory gets covered through questions only. If you read only theory theory and don't do questions, then it's not getting you anywhere again. But if you do questions and if you're doing theory via questions, then that will help you actually.
Because my approach was also more of question based than more of theory reading. so that helped me and uh third and fourthly um uh what i want to talk about is uh mcqs okay practicing mcqs is very very important we cannot go and sit in an exam without doing those mcqs okay i'm not telling you an exact number ki ek din me itne karo because i myself didn't use to follow that thing personally ki hai ek din me 100 mcq karke soungi main nahi i did not uh you know you used to follow anything like that. I used to give tests very diligently and I used to review I tried to review them ASAP means I used to review them as soon as possible okay and wherever I used to get stuck I used to open my notes then and there that's when I started to open my notes and see where did I go wrong was it my recall error or was my approach wrong or did I miss something in the question, not nahi pada, except nahi pada, which we usually do, right? So, you know, by doing this, you will get to know the tricks more and more. You will get to know ki kahan nahi trick hona hai, kahan nahi fasna tha.
Okay? So, that is important. So, you need to learn the art of MCQs, which will come only by solving more MCQs. So, you need to give your tests seriously. You need to solve those MCQs seriously.
You need to take every question seriously. thinking like it is the actual exam. So coming to GTs, I used to give GT once in two weeks or once in three weeks also.
And please about GTs, don't cry over the stuck GT scores because everybody has gone through that phase. Me, I was stuck at a score of 120 for like three months. I started off with a score of 70 corrects.
and by the end of my prep or when the exam neared by, my score went up to over 170 corrects. But there was a lag in between when I was stuck at a score of 120-130 and I was not able to cross that bar. But what matters the most is if you are reviewing those GTs, if you are seeing the mistakes, if you are, you know, reviewing the GT then I don't think you know cribbing over or you know over analyzing the GT scores makes much of a difference because you just need to tell yourself that next time I'm going to do better and if you're not able to do better it's okay it's fine just look at your mistakes and just see your mistakes because in the end of because in the end of all this it will all make sense okay trust me it'll all make sense okay so just have faith have belief and trust yourself that by the end of it you will make it. You just need to be a bit determined and you just need to be consistent. Right?
And I always used to simulate the condition, the exam conditions. Like I used to induce anxiety in myself. Like for example, if a GT is scheduled for tomorrow, then in the night I used to think to myself that Brahmjot, tomorrow is the main exam, tomorrow is the final exam. So we are going to give it very seriously and I used to make sure that by 9 o'clock I am sitting on my chair to give that GT because the exam starts at 9, okay? By 9. So yeah, so I used to, I did not use to switch on my AC.
I have given most of my GTs in fan only. And under fan. And I used to give very little AC or I used to get that sense of reality that I am giving this exam. I used to be in that mental zone that I need to do my best in this exam.
So you also try to do the same so that when you are actually giving the final exam, the stress will not have too much impact on you. Okay, so that is what I'm trying to say. Okay, now the next thing, one very helpful thing that I used to follow was the 60 minute rule.
Okay, so what is 60 minute rule? Praveen sir has talked about. it so when you get up you brush you take bath within 60 minutes of getting up your door to chair time should be less than 60 minutes like when you get up within 60 minutes you should be on your chair with your books open okay so that was i used i have followed that for like for whole of my preparation journey i used to sit within 60 minutes of getting up and that helped me a lot to maintain the consistency And one thing that I forgot to mention about was my notes.
So I'm a very lazy person. First of all, I am not a handmade notes person. So I had ordered printed notes, main printed notes. But did I follow main notes for all the subjects? No, I followed main notes for path, for pharma, for OBG, and for physiology and biochemistry.
So these five subjects I followed main notes for. for the rest of the subjects i totally relied on revision classes and no sorry not revision classes live classes revision classes and btr okay and uh if you want me to discuss in detail about btr that how did i use this as a source i can make a separate video on it but i'll give you an overlook that uh i did btr plus bonus btr for almost all the subjects and uh for uh Extensive subjects like medicine, I did QR that is quick revision and integrated systems from BTR. Okay, so and whatever extra points that I used to come across in the live classes, I used to annotate them in my BTR book and in my bonus BTR PDFs.
Right. So that is how I went about all the subjects. Okay. Yeah. So this is all about my strategy and Coming to the second last thing that we tend to overlook is overthinking.
So overthinking is something that comes naturally to us being medical students. So I am not saying that you know overthinking, but see it's something that you know that happens. Okay, so but whenever you see yourself caught in a loop, Just try to bring yourself back and tell yourself that whatever is in my control, I can only fix it. What is not in my control like the postponements, the ranks, the results, I will not think about them. One thing that I can control is giving in my all, giving my 100%, giving all my efforts to this thing that I have set my mind to.
So if you've set your mind to it, then nobody is stopping you from achieving it, right? So just try to think about the uncontrollables as less as possible. And finally coming to social media. So I am a person, you know, who... gets distracted so i had uninstalled instagram snapchat i don't know how to use snapchat i never understood that app me being millennial and not genzy yeah so instagram i had uninstalled for whatever time period i was preparing and if you're a person who gets distracted and if you're a person who gets affected by looking at other people's lives And, you know, not in that sense, but, you know, seeing others enjoying their life to the fullest and us being locked up in a room and preparing day in, day out.
So, you know, that stresses us a bit. But if you're that kind of a person, then just uninstall the app. And if you're a person who's resilient and, you know, who doesn't, who just has to look at it for like five minutes, 10 minutes in a day, then it's perfectly normal.
uh no issues so yeah these were the major points that i wanted to cover and all the best all the very very best to you you got this because if i can do this you can surely do it okay you are gonna crack it you got this and uh whatever doubts you have got you can put them down in the comment section i'll be very happy to help you all And if you want to reach me out, then my Instagram handle is doctor underscore brahmjoth underscore core. You can follow me over there. And I just know that, you know, you got this and I have more faith and belief in you than you have in yourself right now.
It's a difficult journey. It's not a very smooth path that we've chosen. But we'll get through this.
It will pass soon. And... We're gonna get it.
Go get it. All the best. Bye.
