2024-2025 VEX IQ Robotics Competition: Rapid Relay

Overview of the Game

  • Game Name: Rapid Relay
  • Field Size: 6 feet by 8 feet
  • Field Layout:
    • Wall with four targets (each target has a switch in its center)
    • Pickup zone on one side
    • Load zone on the opposite side

Game Objects

  • Game Objects: Plush balls
    • Size: ~150 mm (just under 6 inches in diameter)
    • Preloads: 2 balls (one per robot)
    • 3rd ball stays outside of the field initially

Scoring System

  • Goals:
    • Launch balls through targets in the wall
    • Each goal = 1 point
    • First pass through a target clears the switch = additional point
    • Scored balls land in the pickup zone
    • Balls can be retrieved by the loader

Ball Play Mechanics

  • Up to 2 balls in play at any time
  • While one ball is being picked up, a third ball can be introduced:
    • Loader drops the ball into the loading station
    • The loading station sends the ball to one side of the load zone
    • New cycle begins once the ball touches the floor
  • Points for passing to an Alliance partner:
    • Points vary based on cleared switches:
      • 1 switch cleared: 4 points per pass
      • 2 switches cleared: 8 points per pass
      • 3 switches cleared: 10 points per pass
      • 4 switches cleared: 12 points per pass

Rapid Load Period

  • Last 15 seconds of the match
    • Loaders can introduce balls into any legal robot starting zone
    • Balls loaded this way are not eligible for passes

Robot Size Restrictions

  • Robots must start fully contained in one of the two starting zones
    • Size of starting zones: 23 inches wide by 6 feet long

Ways to Play

  1. Teamwork Challenge Matches:
    • Two teams collaborate for 60 seconds
    • Maximize points together
    • Each team has: 2 drivers, 1 robot, 1 loader
    • Roles: 1 driver operates for the first half, the other for the second half
  2. Driving Skills Challenge Matches:
    • 60 seconds of driver-controlled time to score points
  3. Autonomous Coding Skills Challenge Matches:
    • 60 seconds of autonomous robot operation to score points
    • No drivers allowed
