Hola, Señor Jordan here. In this lesson, we’re going to talk about
stem-changing verbs in the Preterite. Stem-changing verbs are verbs that have an
additional change in their stem (or part before the -ar, -er, or -ir). In the present tense, let’s see how the
verb pedir changes to say different people ask for or order. pido pides pide pedimos pedís piden Notice that the stem-change occurs in these
forms. We call these shoe verbs or boot verbs because the change occurs in the shape
of a shoe or a boot. In the preterite, only IR verbs will continue
to have a stem-change. Both e-ie verbs and e-i verbs will change
from e to i, but only in the bottom forms. Let’s look at pedir again, but this time
in the preterite to say different people asked for. pedí pediste pidió pedimos pedisteis pidieron Notice that the e to i change only occurs
in the bottom. So in the preterite, we call these slipper
verbs, because they don’t change in all the forms. Just the bottom ones, more like a slipper. Now, let’s see how the verb mentir changes
to say different people lied. mentí mentiste mintió mentimos mentisteis mintieron Notice again that the e to i change only occurs
in the bottom forms, like a slipper. Now, let’s see how the verb vestirse changes
to say different people got dressed. me vestí te vestiste se vistió nos vestimos os vestisteis se vistieron Notice again that the e to i change only occurs
in the bottom forms, like a slipper. Also notice that because vestirse is a reflexive
verb, the se on the end, changes into the different forms and goes before the verb. To review, these are the endings in the preterite
for ir verbs. The e will change to an i for verbs that stem
change from e to ie and e to i in the present tense. This change only occurs in the bottom forms
in the shape of a slipper. -AR and -ER verbs won’t do this.
Just IR verbs. Now, here are some common E-IE verbs that
will do this. divertirse mentir preferir sentir sentirse And here are some common E-I verbs that will
do this. competir conseguir despedirse pedir medir repetir seguir servir vestirse Now, here are some of those verbs in sentences
in the preterite. ¿Por qué me mentiste sobre eso? Elena se vistió de azul para la boda. Él pidió una hamburguesa sin queso y cebolla. Me divertí mucho en el trabajo la semana
pasada. Nos despedimos de la familia antes de mudarnos. María sintió frío durante la noche. Ellas se sintieron aliviadas después del
examen. Ayer preferí quedarme en casa en lugar de
salir. El maestro repitió las instrucciones para
la clase. ¿Por qué nos serviste la comida fría? I hope you liked this video. If it was helpful, please like it, subscribe
