hi I'm Elizabeth Hill Scott from Brit politics that code in UK let's get started on the 22nd of August 1642 King Charles the first raised the royal standard at Nottingham by doing this he had effectively declared war against his own Parliament it had followed years of conflict over religion power money and good old personality clashes between the king and members of his Parliament these conflicts had plunged the whole country into a civil war and everyone had to pick aside nearly three years later on the 14th of June 1645 the two sides met yet again at Naseby Northampton ship it would prove to be the decisive battle of the first English Civil War on hearing that Parliament's powerful New Model Army will not she went from Oxford Charles stupidly chose to stay and fight the two sides met just outside needs me Oliver Cromwell's cavalry successfully got behind the Royalists lines and defeated their infantry it was game over for the king and not just for this battle Charles had lost his main royal army the King's day did not get any better Parliament retook the important City of Leicester and found his personal matters asking for outside Catholic support the war rumbled on but the king was eventually captured and executed on the 30th of January 1649 thanks for watching and if you take a look at rip politics credit UK you'll find hundreds of resources to help you learn about British politics and history plus I cover writing revision motivation and exam tips there's lots of links in the description below and you can mostly find me on instagram at elizabeth underscore Britax bye for now [Music]
