5. Residual and Partial Disability

in our previous segments we've been talking about the situation where someone in fact becomes totally disabled either as a result of an injury or it could be some sort of sickness causing them to be totally disabled the reality is that many people in fact uh are not as a result of an injury are not necessarily totally disabled they may just be partially disabled so they can't perform all of the functions for example of their current job uh or they may be unable to work uh 5 days a week so they may be able to work half a day uh every day or maybe two to two days a week and so in fact uh we're not always necessarily totally disabled and unable to work and so when we look at disability income policies there are some features referred to as residual and partial disability and I'd like to spend a couple of uh minutes right now on these two uh features in disability policies so let's start with residual disability benefit uh residual disability benefit uh basically says that if you decide to go back to work after a result of uh sorry after a period of total disability uh you go back to work but in fact you are not able to work full-time you're only able to work part of the time what a residual disability benefit says is that if as a result of you going back to work you are earning uh less than 80% of what you earned prior to your disability then the residual disability benefit will pay you that difference so if in fact you are earning between 20 and 80% of your pre- disability income uh the residual disability benefit will come into effect and it's on a PR basis so let's say for example uh you're back to work and you're making 60% of your pre- disability income so you're short by 40% what the residual disability benefit will do is in fact pay you 40% of the benefit that you had purchased now in the situation where you in fact go back to work and you're making less than 20 % of your income you would still be on total disability you would still in fact get a full claim if you're making over 80% of what your pred disability income was then you're not going to be eligible for a benefit under this residual disability feature so it's only if you're in between 20% and 80% of your pre- disability income that this feature will come into play and as I mentioned it's a proa basis so for example if you're earning 40% of your pred disability income then you're going to qualify for a residual benefit of 60% of what you have uh of the benefit that you were receiving so for example if you were receiving $3,000 a month during disability you go back to work and you're currently earning uh 40% of $3,000 which would be $1,200 a month you're going to see your policy is going to make up that additional $1,800 to get you back to the $3,000 amount so that's the residual disability feature on uh a disability income policy now the second feature something called partial disability benefit again uh we're in a situation what's different here is that we don't necessarily have to be totally disabled uh before we can collect a partial disability benefit in the residual disability case we were totally disabled and then we went back to work but we weren't earning as much as we did prior to our disability in this situation for partial disability benefit we do not have we did not have to have been totally disabled right from the outset in fact we are partially disabled so we don't have to be totally totally disabled to receive the benefit however as a result of our disability we are unable to perform some of the substantial duties of our job or unable to per or we're able to perform them but we just can't do it all the time we can't work on a full-time basis so in that scenario where you actually are back to work uh the partial disability benefit will continue to pay you uh a benefit of up to 50% of what you recovered for up to two or three years the idea here is that after those two or 3 years you are in fact going to be back uh hopefully able to work full-time uh at full capacity and in order to continue to qualify for this partial disability benefit you're going to have to be under a physician's care to show that you are in fact uh following the recommendations to get yourself rehabilitated and get yourself back to your previous pre-disability position so residual disability and partial disability are two additional features of individual disability plans
