Discussion on African-American History Challenges

all right with that I am coming to you in three two one Greetings and welcome America Good morning to all contiguous 48 states in SiriusXM satellite radio land to all those listening around the world and to all the ships at sea I am Dr Woman Leon and for the next three hours you're going inside the issues here on SiriusXM 126 Urban View I'm going to get right to my uh first guest Uh but of course I always have to say good morning and big shout out to my number one fan Candace Pay down in Richmond Virginia as well as the lovely world travelers Ms Melanie Ballard and Ms Penny Owen Socks Ladies as always good morning Um so about 10 days ago or so President Trump attacked museums in general and the African-American History Museum specifically His executive order cites the National Museum of African-American History and Culture by name and argues that the Smithsonian as a whole is engaging in a quote conserv concerted and widespread effort to rewrite our nation's history end quote I know this happened almost two weeks ago but I wanted to discuss this specifically with my first guest So it took us a little time to get our schedules coordinated He holds the uh John J and Rebecca Moore's chair of history and African-American studies at the University of Houston He's one of the most prolific writers of our time Uh sir the title of your latest book African-Americans in a new history of the USA There we go That is of course the brilliance He is one of the most prolific writers of our time Dr Gerald Horn as always welcome back Thank you for inviting me So in January there was a controversy where videos featuring the Tuskegee Airmen and the Women's Air Force Service Pilots or the Wasps were temporarily removed from Air Force basic training courses After backlash the Air Force reversed its decision and reinstated the training course with the videos The defense department removed and then after backlash restored a web page recognizing the military career of sports legend Jackie Robinson amid a purge of DEI content from across the department's social media and websites Now we have Trump's executive order targeting the Smithsonian and arguing that a corrosive divisive race-centered ideology has reconstructed the nation as inherently racist sexist oppressive or otherwise irredeemably flawed Museums in our nation's capital should be places where individuals go to learn not to be subjected to ideological indoctrination or diverse narratives that distort our shared history Dr Horn as a historian what message is this sending to you The message that is sending in part is that Donald Trump is trying to be in concert with the dominant trends of US history What I mean by that is you're probably familiar with the book by Donald Yakavon of Harvard teaching white supremacy where he talks about from the founding of this country in the late 18th century up until about the 1960s when you had mass protests that this kind of line that Mr Trump has been propagating was the dominant line Uh likewise Derek Black a law professor at the University of South Carolina has written a recent book Dangerous Learning where he talks about the concerted effort to keep black people in particular illiterate There were laws passed during the bad old days of slavery that mandated as much And then there are other trends that we would be remiss if we fail to acknowledge That is to say that there's a certain kind of vandalism emerging from Washington You see this in the attacks on institutions of higher learning such as Colombia Cornell Harvard Princeton Northwestern etc That is to say that the right-wing populists now dominant in Washington see education as their antagonist Reference here the attempt to abolish the Department of Education reference here the ill-considered comment by Mr Trump that those who are not educated tend to be part of his base and the essence of right-wing populism in part involves an attack by masses of settlers and settler descendants upon perceived elites The perceived elites are seen as too sensitive to the demands coming for example from the black community not to mention the international pressure that is oftentimes operating in league with the black community And that brings us to other unfortunate episodes that need to be referenced I'm speaking of the fact that the US Naval Academy in Annapolis a stones throw from where you are now sitting has removed scores of books from their library including I'm afraid to say perhaps I should say I'm happy to say one of my books And as a New York Times article pointed out of late they have not tossed aside or into the dust bin a minec by one Adolf Hitler which obviously sends a very chilling message But it's not accidental that the African-American Museum is in the crosshairs Uh we should note uh quite unfortunately that the leader of that institution Kevin Young has stepped down perhaps a victim of the kind of pressure that's being placed upon institutions that try to shed light and not heat And so given all that I've said only the naive should be shocked or surprised by this recent dismissive attempt by Mr Trump to somehow force us all into a state of ignorance Is there an even more insidious motive here from from a broader historic perspective Uh you can look over the annals of history and time and and and see dictators strong men uh and and their interest in controlling the narrative And so from from that perspective should Americans and particularly African-Americans be very very concerned as uh the president is obviously trying to throw uh our history which is American history into the dust bins of history Well obviously we should be concerned That is to say attempting to obliterate our history uh could be a prelude and a pretext to obliterating our community as a whole Uh as we speak uh I'm editing my next book which will be out in a few weeks entitled The Capital of Slavery Washington DC 1800 to 1865 And certainly in Washington DC during those years covered there were not only attempts to extrapate altogether the black community a restraining factor was the dire necessity for the cheap labor of people of African descent But if you fast forward to 2025 with the development of artificial intelligence and robotization there is less of a need I'm afraid to say for that kind of cheap and cheapened labor And also I should mention in this context that with this unwinable trade war with the people's republic of China uh this does not bode well for the prospects of the US economy uh placing further pressure on the rulers of this country and helping to intensify their desire to find scapegoats which leads inexraably to this idea that the black community in particular is disposable After all we are the demographic that voted most heavily against Mr Trump in November 2024 9 to one amongst black women 8 to2 amongst black men And as we know Mr Trump has an elephant-like memory He does not suffer from amnesia when it comes to pulverizing and punishing those who he feels have crossed him And therefore yes your question should be taken very seriously We should be ultra concerned about this turn of events What about his the framing of this issue and the fact that he considers this to be corrosive race centered ideology He also later says in the executive order as I mentioned in the open uh that museum should be places where individuals go to learn not be subjected to ideological indoctrination Um he's looking he's taking historic reality historical facts and removing them from the narrative which one would have to argue is in and of itself ideological indoctrination because you can indoctrinate someone by not only what you tell them but also what you don't tell them because context is always important Well undoubtedly but uh I think it's a fool's eron to try to find logical consistency within the rhetoric of Mr Trump We know that his words are basically designed to obuscate They're designed to throw dust in the eyes of the unwitting and to disarm those who are incapable of fighting back And so we obviously should take this moment very seriously Obviously we need to be looking for allies hither and yan not only within the four corners of the United States of America uh but also abroad uh as you know I'm speaking to you from Western Canada and this entire country is up in arms with regard to Mr Trump's ill-advised threats to enex this major economy and major country There's this has led to a boycott a tourism boycott which is punishing the economies of Florida and Arizona But it seems that it would probably be asking too much for many of our organizations even to cross the border and try to find assistance and solidarity Uh even though of course by launching a trade war against every country on earth including uninhabited islands uh Mr Trump automatically helped to create a major global block that is willing to bring him to heal But sadly I'm not sure if it's within the ideological kin of many of our organizations and leaders to take advantage of this promising global situation And I'm glad you mentioned the uninhabited islands such as the McDonald Islands because those penguins are pissed about being about being put in this uh those are some angry angry penguins Uh you just made reference to uh the attack on academia Uh in fact let let me do this Let let me let me wrap this segment up uh or this this this part of the conversation Let let me ask this on the back end Ladies and gentlemen uh Dr Dr Wmer Leon here inside the issues is where you are SiriusXM 126 urban view Dr Gerald Horn is my guest and right now you're listening to very special This is from Money Jungle United Artist released 1963 Duke Ellington piano Charlie Mingus on bass Max Roach on drums And I love Duke in these smaller settings love him in any setting but I particularly enjoy Duke Ellington in these uh in these smaller smaller settings which is what we're going to be focusing on for the remainder of the show So with that sit back and uh there's more on the other side Keep it locked right here Okay that's 13705 [Music] All right coming back to you in three two one We are back We are back Dr Woman Leon here Inside the issues is where you are Sirius XM 126 Urban View And that of course is very special from Money Jungle Uh United Artist 63 release Duke Ellington leading that date That's Duke on piano Charlie Mingus on bass and Max Roach on drums Dr Gerald Horn is my guest We've got a couple major uh issues that we're covering And to wrap up uh Dr Horn this this uh Trump's attack on museums and you had mentioned in the first segment about his attack on academia And I just wanted to to to to get one more uh bit of analysis on that He he cut $4 million from Princeton's climate research funding because the administration determined that that is exposing students and other young people to climate anxiety Uh Harvard is now suing to block the Trump administration's review of nearly nine billion dollar that's yes folks with a B in federal contracts and grants awarded to uh to Harvard as part of this crackdown on what the White House is saying is anti-semitism on college campuses Uh does it make sense to tie this attack Well we've already just really talked about on on tying this attack on the attacking of um of uh attacking academia with with with with attacking uh museums but I think it's also important for people to remember that this didn't just start with the Trump administration that you know that the attack on Colombia uh came a as a result of the Biden administration they opened the doors on that And I also recall Lynn Cheney during the W Bush administration uh at the I think she was at the Heritage Foundation attacking academics that were deemed to be too liberal and resulting in the deportation of some So I I just want to be sure that folks understand that this isn't just uh Trumpism at play here Well with regard to Colombia and the attack on other institutions of that caliber such as Harvard obviously it's driven in no small measure by a flailing attempt to bolster the Israeli genocide and their ongoing war in Gaza We also know that Mr Trump in league with Mr Netanyahu who has visited the White House twice during the first 80 or so days of the Trump administration that they have in the crosshairs Iran That helps to explain the major flotilla that is sent to the vicinity of Iran That helps to explain also why Mr Trump ironically has sought to reopen negotiations with Iran so that he can have an excuse for bombing Iran when presumably these negotiations do not bear fruition And so you cannot separate this attack on universities and the weaponizing of quote anti-semitism unquote You cannot separate that from a larger imperial agenda involving support for the fellow settler colonial state that is Israel Indeed uh what's often times conspicuously missing from the discourse about such issues is the question of settler solidarity which not only links the heavyweight champion of settler colonialism speaking of the United States with his junior partner in Israel but also helps to shed light on the attack on the African National Congress government in South Africa the attempt to place sanctions on that government the attempt to attract across the Atlantic those from the European minority who are claiming obviously falsely and maliciously They're being persecuted that is to say they're being subjected to efforts to reverse the ravages of their centuries long depradations against the African majority And so this should be plain for all to see but sadly I'm afraid to say it is not very very uh very sadly What what what do you make because so many folks this this this question just just came to mind So so many folks equate the the Ivy League um with the elite and with the ruling class So what do what does it say to you that the Trump administration is attacking uh the the the very inst the very academic institutions and not only Trump but but others as well are attacking the the the very institutions that in the minds of many are considered to be the training grounds for many of the elite that are that are in his cabinet and in and were in the Biden administration and in the Obama administration and so on and so forth Well uh JD Vance the vice president is a graduate of Yale Law School Mr Trump himself is a graduate of an Ivy League school speaking at the University of Pennsylvania Mr Hexath the Pentagon chief as I understand it attended Princeton University But we need to understand that there are rifts between and amongst the elite You see this happening right now with regard to the trade war where even those like William Aman an alumnest of Harvard a billionaire hedge fund guy uh issued some tepid criticisms of this tariff war by the way after giving fullthroated endorsement of Mr Trump's campaign eventuating in victory in November 2024 And then you have to have an understanding of US history That is to say what's popularly referred to as US democracy and I'm now referring to the 1820s and Andrew Jackson whose portrait was placed in a prominent place in the White House by Mr Trump During the Jackson administration in the 1820s you also saw an attack on elites and the attack was coming from below by workingclass settlers and by poor settlers etc with this trade war unfolding which I predict will have damaging impact on the US economy uh that will lead to further unrest amongst the Trump base 77 million strong it would be mathematically imprecise to say that the 1% supplied 77 million votes to Mr Trump in 2024 when the population of the country is merely 330 million And with that kind of unrest bubbling to the surface amongst the base of the Trump party of the Trump base uh then you can expect to see more riffs within the elite because let's face it what is helping to restrain criticism of Mr Trump in the higher ranks of the Republican party as has been freely admitted is the fear that people might be subjected to physical violence and they may be subjected to physical violence on the part of the Trump base many of whom were elated when Mr Trump gave pardons to the misreants who tried to execute an insurrection on January 6 2021 to keep him in office And this goes back as well to the ongoing debate in the Trump inner circle between the so-called tech bros of Silicon Valley Recall that Elon Musk and the bros wanted to see an extension of these HB1 visas which would allow more high-tech workers from India in particular to come to the United States Whereas Steve Bannon representing the thuggish wing of the Trump base objected strenuously In fact it was some weeks ago that he suggested that Mr Mus would be exiled permanently from the Trump inner circle which has not happened as of our conversation today And so we should not be surprised by this kind of infighting between and amongst those in the Trump base or for that matter the fact that Mr Trump would attack Ivy League institutions even though they constitute a part of the elite because these Ivy League institutions are often times seen as being too willing and too keen to surrender to use a verb of Mr Trump's minting to surrender to DEI diversity equity inclusion After all uh a number of the leading affirmative action cases have involved Harvard University for example University of Michigan University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for example And so it's not surprising nor shocking that these institutions now are suffering the hammer blows of critique not to mention the attempt to denude them of federal funding Moving to a discussion about deportation and Trump's deportation regime Uh three weeks ago the US sent 238 migrants to Salvadorian to a Salvadorian mega prison Uh documents indicate that most have no apparent criminal records Uh just an evening ago the US deported 10 more alleged Latin American gang members to El Salvador And the flights come as the administration faces criticism over mistakenly deporting Kilmar Abrego Garcia a Maryland man illegal resident They sent him to El Salvador despite an explicit court order barring his removal uh to that country and a directive by the Supreme Court uh to fac to have the Trump administr administration facilitate his return Uh Dr Horn beyond the immigration issue I've been telling people that I see this as a trial balloon uh a a testing that that a tri balloon that is that is testing due process because if Trump can get away with his with this uh relative to immigrants are we next uh quote I love it Trump told reporters on Air Force One last week if he could take them I'd be honored to give them I don't know what the law says on that but I can't imagine the law would say anything different if they can house these horrible criminals for a lot less money than it costs us I'm all for it." End quote So Dr horn the deportation regime Well I'm sure you know that in a recent Supreme Court descent Sonia Sotomayora an associate justice of the US Supreme Court fundamentally suggested that next in line might be US nationals who could be shipped without due process to a hellhole of a prison in El Salvador Now this may sound outlandish to some but in light of the fact that you saw I'm sure that very chilling and disturbing video from Metford Massachusetts on the outskirts of Tus University where a graduate student of Turkish origin was surrounded by agents of the state some of whom were masked who seized her phone put her hands behind her back and then shuffled her into a vehicle where she's now been deposited at a detention facility Like uh the graduate student at Colombia who was treated similarly of Palestinian descent he is now according to an immigration judge scheduled to be deported from the Atlantic to the Pacific We've received disturb disturbing reports of graduate students of foreign origin who have had their visas revoked which is another blow to the higher education sector because these international students often times pay full freight They pay full tuition which then helps to subsidize US nationals who generally and traditionally do not pay full tuition So this is a yet another disguised blow at institutions of higher learning And so we see that the beat goes on and to step back for a second it's apparent that we are living through and enduring a counterrevolutionary period Uh this should not be shocking nor surprising to those of us who are familiar with the trajectory of US history We experienced something similar after the sunlight of emancipation in 1865 was followed by the darkness of the overthrow of reconstruction and posts slavery reforms that taking place by 1877 We are all familiar with the red scare of the 1950s which led to the marginalizing and sidelining of some of the giants of our community speaking in the first instance of the late great Paul Robson singer actor athlete linguist etc Indeed we can trace many of today's problems to the fact that those like Robersonson and his ilk have been ideologically marginalized and sidelineed leaving us seemingly incapable of engaging the kind of internationalism that he exemplified as suggested by my previous remark about folks not even having the acuity to reach across the border to Canada for example So uh this is the sad state of affairs Although I remain optimistic that this sad state of affairs is not eternal Ladies and gentlemen Dr Wmer Leon here inside the issues is where you are SiriusXM 126 view and that's the analysis and the brilliance of uh Dr Gerald Horn And right now what I want you to do is focus uh on the brilliance of none other than Duke Ellington Charlie Mangus and Max Roach in uh this is very special from Money Jungle 1963 United Artist release Do yourselves a favor Keep it locked right here SiriusXM 126 Urban View [Music] Can I say something Sure So I'm uh I'm going to kill the sound for a second I got to return a phone call quickly Okay [Music] Okay 34 Hey this is this is Gerald Horn calling when I'm in the middle of an interview Could you make it about 6:05 Yeah Okay I'll see you then Byebye All right Uh oh thank you Okay we got 22 minutes left Uh I have one more question about uh this deportation issue and uh coming back to you in three two one We're back We are back Dr Wmer Leon here inside the issues is where you are SiriusXM 126 Urban View and that's Money Jungle off of uh I'm sorry that's very special off of Money Jungle 63 United Artist Released as Duke Ellington leading the date with Charlie Mingus and Max Roach and and as I said a little earlier I I just love listening to Duke in uh these smaller settings smaller format smaller groups Um but um anyway uh Dr Joe Horn is my guest And I I uh Joe I got one more question regarding this whole immigration thing because we're also we we we've also over the last few months been experiencing uh American academics that travel overseas returning back to the United States and they're being stopped They're being pulled aside taken into the little room and being harassed having their phones taken and their computers taken It's happened to Professor Danny Shaw It's happened to Professor Dan Kovalik It's also happened to an attorney in Detroit uh Amir Mlad Mlad um the ICE detaining him and and and taking his phone And then there was also I think a a a a Turkish I think she was Turkish physician who went to le maybe maybe she was Lebanese She went to the le to she went to Lebanon for the funeral of um Hassan Nwallah and um uh then she was not allowed re-entry So this whole immigration issue uh that that to me is is is is related to that Your thoughts Well the latter case of the Lebanese scientist refers to a woman who was a leading scholar at Brown University But and that brings us back to the attack on universities the attack on the Ivy League But we also need to put this in a wider context because it's not just universities that are being attacked We're familiar with these rather corrupt deals that Mr Trump has brokered with major law firms Paul Weiss and Manhattan in the first instance which had a previous reputation of being close to the Democratic party They brokered a deal whereby they will provide pro bono that is to say free legal services to causes that Mr Trump holds dear Other firms such as Wilky Gallagher which the first ladies excuse me of former Vice President Kla Harris's spouse Doug Mhof He's a partner there They have inked a similar deal Although to be fair both Kla Harris and Mr Immhof have objected uh to the deal just brokered And then there is the pressure on the media uh which you see in Washington with Jeff Bezos the billionaire owner principal stockholder I should say of Amazon also owns the Washington Post and has issued new editorial guidelines that cause Eugene Robinson a black columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner to step down just recently accompanied by Ruth Marcus who had written a number of stinging columns about legal issues in the US Supreme Court We know that Disney settled a case that Mr Trump had filed against ABC television after George Stephanopoulos the host of a very popular Sunday talk chat program had been accused of defaming Mr Trump when he apparently mischaracterized the lawsuit involving Eugene Carol of Manhattan who accused Mr Trump some years ago of sexually abusing her That settlement led to a hefty contribution from Disney and ABC to the coffers of a proposed Trump presidential library which I assume will have more than coloring books on his shelves Yeah it'll have comic books as well Oh I see Yeah Thank you for that friendly amendment Yeah And got to stay on top of these things man You know about the ongoing lawsuit against CBS 60 Minutes because of supposed improper editing of an interview with Kla Harris Uh I'm afraid to say that 60 Minutes and CBS will probably fold like a cheap suit like these law firms and like some universities And obviously it's not premature to begin to invoke not only the C-word of counterrevolution but the F-word of fascism because that seems to be the path that we're headed on And if that particular nightmare scenario materializes you better believe that first and foremost amongst the victims will be the descendants of the formerly enslaved which may I'm afraid to say have some of us looking back at the Jim Crow era as the good old days And among other things that we have found ourselves uh subjected to uh this this whole issue with um according to the economic institute a policy institute uh you know in in just over two months the Trump administration has laid off tens of thousands of federal workers at several agencies And what and and and we know the adage that when America gets a cold black America gets pneumonia What how do you see all of this along with the with the whole tariff fiasco Um uh how does this wind up impacting uh the black working class Well you hit the nail right on the head I mean it's no accident that Washington DC has been called by some or characterized by some as chocolate city And so when there are mass layoffs in the District of Columbia obviously that disproportionately impacts the black working class and setting aside for a moment the mass layoffs we know that there has been an ongoing long-term plan of moving federal offices beyond the jurisdiction of Washington DC for example to more conservative friendly climbs such as Idaho for example or certain precincts in the state of Colorado And that presents many black workers in Washington with a very unfortunate dilemma whether they should follow their job out to Idaho which is known for having a strong white supremacist movement or for example staying in Washington and running the risk perhaps the probability of layoffs This will obviously have repercussions and ramifications with regard to homeownership amongst the black working class with regard to homelessness amongst the black working class and the attack on unions which you also see in Washington with the attack on the American Federation of Government Employees which historically has had black leadership Uh it's an emblem of fascist regimes and fascist movements to try to strangle and handcuff the labor movement in the first instance And here you have in Washington a confluence of many tendencies that the ultra-conservatives despise Number one the racism which you see involved and embedded in their attacks on the black community their opposition to unions which you see in the attack on the Federation of Government Employees And then there's their hostility to Washington DC which after all uh it was Washington DC that prosecuted the US civil war against the slave south that led to the major investment of many enslavers speaking of the billions of dollars in human property that they had being liquidated wiped out without their being compensated Let's not even talk about the question of reparations to the descendants of the enslaved And they are still smarting from that devastating defeat that they endured which came in no small measure because the Lincoln government had the intelligence at a certain moment to allow into the ranks of his army 200,000 black men who then turned the tide against the Confederate States of America which to that point had been doing quite well in terms of fighting the Lincoln government And so if you put all of those factors together you begin to understand that just as if just as before 1865 there was a concerted attack on the unpaid sector of the working class that happened to be black in 2025 there's an attack on the paid sector of the working class that happens to be black expanding that analysis a little further When we look at the budget framework that has been passed there uh the the Republicans are doing everything in their power uh to to expand the Donald Trump tax cuts and at the at the cost of social safety net programs and and and other uh other other types of programs So again laying off uh federal workers I think the number is about 22 or 23% of the federal workforce uh is made up of African-Americans across the board Um the largest employer of African-Americans I believe is the uh is the federal government When you look at uh those re I think 32% of African-Americans receiving social security payment that's their sole source of retirement income And so the average check is somewhere we'll say about $1,800 a month So you're looking at uh about $22,000 a year give or take a little bit And so they're living below the poverty line I mean those are just a couple examples Uh uh uh and again when when when when white America gets a cold black America catches pneumonia So these tax cuts across the board are and we only make up what 14% of the population So the these tax cuts are going to have an incredibly an incredibly disproportionate impact on uh I mean these tax implications are going to have uh an incredibly disproportionate impact on our community Uh indeed And I'm sure you've been following the very tragic stories about what's happening to the Social Security administration in terms of the wounds inflicted by the so-called Department of Government Efficiency administered by the refugee from South African aparate speaking Elon Musk We should not see it as coincidental that Elon Musk has wielded a hatchet against Chocolate City After all he hails from the land of Apartate And not to mention Elon Musk but of course he's accompanied by other refugees Sorry Peter Theal Peter Theel who formerly not only lived in Johannesburg but South African occupied Namibia the neighbor to its north Rolaf Botha who sits at the pinnacle of venture capital in Silicon Valley a lineal descendant or a lateral descendant I should say of Pete Boa who was the last foreign minister of aparate South Africa David Saxs the crypto zar and AISAR and the White House also with roots in apartate South Africa But once again if I may I'm not sure if our media for the most part and certainly our organizations and leaders have done an adequate job in terms of preparing the community for what it is facing by connecting these dots but not only connecting the dots but developing a strategy whereby we could dig ourselves out of this deep hole in which we find ourselves In fact I'm glad that you said that because and I know now some of my audience will probably start rolling their eyes Wilmer here you go again Um but there there's there there's there are no substantive alternatives being proposed There are some there are some outliers out there Bernie Sanders has made a couple of uh suggested a couple of things good ideas but his ideas are not being backed by the party You've got Primila Gyipol and was in Washington State some good ideas But what you you hear these these lone soldiers out there but I I don't hear the party proposing legislation to offset what we are finding ourselves being subjected to And I know that the that the that they don't have the majorities in the Senate and they don't have majorities in the House but you've got to put up a fight and telling people that Donald Trump is an idiot That's not the answer because we know that But but but if the Democrats aren't offering any substantive or substantial alternatives then we're looking at a replay of the Kla Harris 2024 campaign Well I'm happy to report that uh on a weekly basis I travel from my current residence in Victoria British Columbia Canada across the border to collect my mail in the otherwise sleepy town of Port Angeles And I believe it was on April 5th 2025 when you had the hands-off demonstrations not only from the Atlantic to the Pacific but also overseas that in Port Angeles you had a similar demonstration focusing admittedly on domestic issues But it was quite heartening to see so many uh in the streets And here let me make a point of personal privilege Whenever I'm before a microphone of late I've been stressing to the black community that they should pay careful and close attention to this important summit that will be unfolding in Adis Ababa Ethiopia in September 2025 involving the first face-to-face meeting between leaders of the African Union the pan-African transcontin continental body involving four dozen plus independent African states and leaders of Caraccom Caribbean community Jamaica Trinidad Barbados at all Their major item on the agenda will be reparations to the descendants of enslaved Africans But I've been suggesting that black Americans who unlike our counterparts in the Caribbean and in Africa don't enjoy sovereignty but that we nonetheless organize delegations to travel to Adis Ababa and to force onto the agenda And I don't think we'll have to force it I think it'll be uh basically uh embraced warmly to force on to the agenda the question of sanctions against the Trump regime Already you see grassroots sanctions against the United States For example here in Canada uh there is a boycott of US tourism which is punishing red states like Arizona and Florida for example It's also punishing Las Vegas where apparently one quarter of international visitors happen to be Canadian We see that in the wake of US support for Israeli genocide that spontaneously there erupted boycots of emblems of US imperialism like Starbucks and McDonald's for example So that's the sort of wave we need to ride because if we know beans about our history we know that the way we were able to escape enslavement and then push back against Jim Crow was precisely through global alliances And that's what's conspicuously and sorely missing from the mix as we speak And to that point about what's significantly missing and sorely from the mix is the the voice of the Congressional Black Caucus And you know we had Cy Booker last week with his uh 25-hour yakathon Um but he never said a mumbling word about genocide He didn't say anything about the US being complicit in the war crimes in Gaza And he was applauded and he was on um Meet the Press today and he was on the View uh the day after this thing uh or two days after this thing So now he's being lauded as some um you know I don't know radical whatever But um hey man uh talking loud and saying nothing Well obviously we need new approaches Obviously we need new ideas Uh obviously we need new forms of organizing new forms of organization and with respect or let us say the respect that may be due to the Congressional Black Caucus and some of our uh counterparts and peers in Washington who accept generous campaign donations from the Zionist lobby such as are doled out on a regular basis to Senator Booker Uh it would be simple-minded to think that those who are receiving such donations if you like would then turn around and be our tribunes Mhm We know that those of us who propose that uh sending we should send delegations to Adis Aaba Ethiopia we know that the Zionist lobby is quite hostile as already noted to a leader of the African Union Speaking of South Africa which had the timmerity to drag Israel before the International Court of Justice is a leading member of the bricks Brazil Russia India China South Africa which is threatening the hedgeimonyy of US imperialism And so I I think that the black community in particular should recognize how we're perceived and more important than that objectively where our interests lie And certainly they lie as has been the case historically with alliances with our friends counterparts and peers in Africa and the Caribbean and also with that understanding with the with this latest attack on those who are considered to be uh challenging American policy uh you know people just need to keep that in mind as they are uh looking to formulate these relationships Uh Lil Marco Rubio doesn't look favorably upon those that are pursu that are uh are trying to develop those types of relationships Oh to put it mildly I'm sure you heard about his trip to Jamaica where he basically told the leaders in Kingston that they need to make a choice either between US imperialism or the bricks led by China Now that's obviously ridiculous to make threats to a sovereign nation but it's emblematic and is prototypical of what we are facing right now in Washington And so obviously we should be sending delegations to Kingston Jamaica to engage in acts of solidarity with the sovereign government of Jamaica which I dare say would then be paid back with regard to solidarity with regard to our causes right here in North America And he's also the wrong guy to be making the threat And that's the wrong threat to be making I in the long term I believe Dr Dr Gerald Horn my dear brother thank you so much for your time You you you got me You you you you put me in on a very tight schedule I greatly greatly appreciate it and look as always be safe Look forward to having having you back Good luck to you Thank you Thank you folks Dr Wmer Leon here Inside the issues is where you are SiriusXM 126 overview There's a whole lot more on the other side Keep it locked right here
