Enhancing Comprehension with SQ5R

When reading your textbook, it’s always best to read actively. SQ5R is one strategy you can use for active reading. First, Survey: Read the introduction and summary. Skim through the chapter paying attention to anything that stands out. These can give you an idea of the general structure and content before you begin reading. Second, Question: Set a purpose for your reading by developing questions about the material. Use the learning outcomes and headings to create questions. Third, Read: Break the material into sections that will take about 30 minutes to read. Look for answers to your questions as well as key concepts, and supporting details. Fourth, Record: After each section, write down the answers to your questions, and other important information. Fifth, Recite: Look away from the material and try to recite the key information and ideas from memory. Sixth, Review: This is an ongoing process. Review your notes as frequently and as often as possible! Review, review, review! Seventh, Reflect: Consider and reflect on what you have just learned. Try and connect new ideas to older ones, this process will help you start to form a bigger picture. Go ahead, try SQ5R when you read your next chapter!
