put on your track shoes and run out of the dealership if they do any of these five red flags my dad sold cars for 40 freaking years he's going to explain the things you need to watch out for at the dealership and if they do any of these things Usain Bolt out of there uh I like that yeah ready set go number one what's the first red flag possible the dealer won't honor the advertised price you know the price that they have online to get you in oh no no no we can't actually sell it at that price well if that's what you run into nah you need to go there are so many different flavors of that bait and switch there's the "Oh unfortunately that car just sold so let's get you on a different car that happens to unfortunately be a little bit more expensive." There's the "Oh well that's the advertised price and it doesn't necessarily include all the add-ons we put on the vehicle." There's the that was actually a typo and the advert i mean there are so many flavors of bait and switch and the best one would be oh well that that's that price is with all incentives and well most folks aren't going to qualify for all of them yeah when you see the online advertised price and it's it's every single stacked rebate you've got the military rebate you got the recent college grad rebate you've got the the conquest rebate you've got the you're financing through us so you get an extra th,000 off you have a tradein that's 2019 or newer with under 20,000 miles so you can actually if they change the price on you you walk out and to be clear you can do a lot of that getting the out the door price without even going to the dealership you do it virtually or over the phone things like that beforehand okay number red flag number one right there red flag number two Dad where you're putting on those shoes and you're running out of there uh well we need a good faith deposit from you on that vehicle before we go for a test drive excuse me help us understand in what world do you need to put down a deposit to test drive a vehicle does this also tie into like credit apps before taking test drives help us understand that would that would be another one where they would go uh we we would need your credit application before you go for a test drive in what world only only retail automotive that's the only world in which they Well okay maybe RVs and maybe boats okay but to be clear this is a red flag if a dealer says absolutely they you don't need a good faith deposit um to go for a test drive the good faith is the fact you even showed up at their dealership to want to test drive the vehicle now let me let me clarify to a certain degree if you're at a dealership and you want to test drive the Ferrari okay they probably will want a credit application because they're going to want to make sure that you actually have the ability to buy that car after the test drive because they don't want you just joy riding yeah but you know most mainstream dealerships where you're looking at a mainstream car uh mass market car they don't need a good faith deposit from you if you give them cash or a credit card so you can go for a test drive trust me they're not handing either one of those back to you right away when you say "Yeah I don't think so." It's kind of I know I know I got two and three here one is the good faith deposit the other is the credit application on the test drive kind of leading me though to another red flag which would be taking the keys for the trade in you can't get them back yes that is a tactic that's I mean you've heard stories of like the keys for your car ending up on the roof of the dealership just they could keep you there so there's another red flag in here which would be tactics to try and keep you stuck at the dealership could could you imagine being the employee at the dealership whose job it was to climb the ladder to the roof to go retrieve the the customer's keys did that ever happen at any of your dealerships uh no not at any of mine but but the stall tactics certainly helped oh my goodness gracious and and I can't I can't tell you how many times you know a customer went to a competitor of ours and then came to our store and said "Well they wouldn't let me leave they would never let me leave." Um they would all you had to do is stand up and walk but it but to be clear don't Yeah do not trivialize they put a tremendous amount of pressure on you not to leave you got to remember this is our red flags video d and human nature for most customers is to not want to get into a confrontation or an argument which to be clear if you did go to a dealership and you didn't watch this video beforehand and they took your credit card as a good faith deposit before the test drive and then they don't give it back to you because they're putting pressure on you no wonder they would show up at your dealership back in the day and say "They wouldn't let me leave." Same thing goes for when they're appraising the trade and they're holding on to the keys let me go find my manager yeah i I can't tell you how many times oh the the manager forgot to put the keys back on the desk um and and he he just ran down the street to pick up his lunch he should be back in 20 minutes uh I do apologize yeah you hear stories like that all the time you you hear stuff like that you leave absolutely another red flag Dad i think we're talking specifically about used cars here reconditioning fee oh we have to add a $2,000 certification fee help us understand some of these used car red flags that you've seen in your career and you see obviously nowadays with Car Edge and why they're a red flag why we should run well because a legitimate dealership would would have those fees already factored into the selling price so if if the selling price on a car was $19,995 um and and that's what brought you and then they sudden you drive the car and you like it and you answered all the questions the way they wanted you answer the questions and and then they sit you down and they go "Well on every one of our pre-owned cars you know we do a thorough inspection and reconditioning and uh well we charge every car $1,95 it's a cost average uh but you know that that way we were able to cover so it's $19,995 plus the $1,995 reconditioning fee no a legitimate dealership would have the reconditioning built into the asking price which to be clear the jargon here reconditioning is a cost center for a dealership to get a car ready to be showroom showroom ready to be ready to be sold to a retail customer whether they bought it at the auction or they traded it in so adding that line item kind of feels like our first red flag where it's a bait and switch on price typically oh absolutely and it's only going to be elicited and uncovered when you go to ask for the out the door price another red flag then where I'm running out of this dealership if I'm buying a used car if they tell me I can't get a pre-purchase inspection um yeah uh yeah that's another one and you should every every used car even certified cars should should get a pre-purchase inspection and if a dealership won't allow that that's a giant red flag there is no reason if they've done the work that needed to be done that they would ever object to you taking it to an independent mechanic to have an independent mechanic put his eyes on it his or her eyes on on a used vehicle it's just another set of eyes on a multi,000 multi,000 purchase and people can miss things so not letting you do a pre-purchase inspection is critically important we've got a great guide back on caredge.com we'll link to that in the description about pre-purchase inspections last red flag yeah you know for five I think we're up to like eight or nine typical for us another red flag that the last one telling you you have to finance through the dealership and there's a couple flavors of this one you have to finance through us if you finance through us we'll give you a bigger discount on the vehicle and this one also reminds me of another red flag which is you have to buy the extended warranty so tied selling things like that to get the discount or to get the financing help us uncover and really understand why this is a red flag and what it means well it they they just can't it exacerbates it seems that way it ex I can't even say the word that I wanted to say um exasperated that's the word I was looking for it's just another tactic on behalf of a dealership to do things in an underhand manner that they shouldn't do you you know to to hear that well I have to finance it through the bank of your choice oh and um you you have to keep the loan in place for a minimum of 6 months that's all BS it is just a legitimate business advertises a product for sale and they don't suddenly dictate the terms of how you can pay for it in order for you to get it and the price of the vehicle doesn't change based on the way you're going to pay for it so this is this is if they're trying to get you to finance through them and the price changes because of that that's a red flag if they're telling you that the price changes if you buy the warranty or the finance rate we've seen this you can get approved at 5.9% or 4.9% if you get the warranty you run you get out of there these are red red flags or one more we might as well throw one more in there uh well that that the price Well that was based on you having a trade in yeah uh if you don't have a trade in well then then the price goes up another $2,000 let us know in the comments down below what other red flags you've experienced and obviously if you know anyone buying a car anytime soon just send them this video all right don't let them get taken advantage of these red flags what was this 9 minutes of your life to be a more informed car shopper you see these red flags you put on those shoes what's your fastest 100 time Dad uh well I think I was just off the Olympic record if I recall was uh 10.01 seconds there you go folks get out of that dealership in 10.01 seconds
