hello and welcome to the Mr 50mm YouTube channel I'm Mr mamia actually I'm not I'm Chris as you all know today we'll be having a look at another 35mm point and shoot camera this one right here but first I just wanted to say some of you may have noticed I have a bit of a soft spot for Mia and you know some other brands but Mia I have the Mia 645 Pro TL I have the mimia Press uh super and Universal the phase one 645 DF and DF plus those are basically variants of the Mia 645 afds that were a little bit nerfed you know they're not able to take film backs have the m mamia c220 in short I like mamia so of course when I saw this strange 35 mil point- in shoot that said Mia right on it on the local marketplaces I had to have it so I messaged the buyer and arranged a pickup so you might have figured by reading the text that this is called the mimia m a 35mm point- and shoot camera from the80s so I picked it up I picked it up locally for the princely sum of 20 Canadian doll that's like three us nickels so let's get into it so what is the Mia M well the Mia m is is a 35mm point in shoot camera released in 1982 at least according to a couple of the blog posts that I found on the WW dos of the internet now if anyone knows otherwise let me know in the comments below uh and you know well H honestly this is off to maybe a bit of a rocky start but trust me it gets a tiny bit better the Mia the mamia M features autofocus Auto exposure has a pop-up FL and the lens is a mamia c cor 38 mm f2.8 made up in uh four elements three groups and it's you know f2.8 so fairly fast for a point and shoot the shutter is fully automatic it's determined by the CDs uh light sensor right there and it's capable of shutter speeds of 1/8 of a second to 1500th of a second and the camera is equipped with a soft timer and lever is right there the viewfinder over here is apparently 45 times magnification covers around 83% of the frame and within the finder there are Parallax lines for C closeup correction the bottom of the finder is actually pretty interesting it features a Zone Focus scale and indicator and there's an LED that kind of like blinks on the top for potential camera Shake If thinks if it thinks the exposure is a little too slow the uh camera of course takes 35 mm film from ISO 25 to 800 is what you can set it to and uh you might have noticed there's no film Advanced knob or lever cuz it does it on its own the camera takes two daa batteries none of that cr123 or whatever and of course the batter door is one of these these weird flimsy plastic dealies that's prone to Breaking so watch out for that if you are looking to buy one of those luckily my battery door appears to be in quite good shape it Flappy flappies and everything now finally this camera it's about 132 millimeters this way uh 75 millimet this way and 55 mm this way it weighs in at around 430 gram without batteries so it's not super light for a py shoes [Music] shooting the Mia M operation and feel you may have notied that this camera is a tiny bit big especially if you compared to something like the Olympus Mew series of cameras now that's not a super terrible thing since it's reasonably light moreover I actually like the design despite looking like it was inspired by the concept of B boxes it's actually pretty comfortable to hold the rubberized grip section here is quite nice and it offers a pretty good place to hold the camera now it a little bit cramp you might have noticed that my hands are you know it things are kind of jumbled together there and rly honestly it's a little more comfortable if I hold it with my pinky finger underneath but it doesn't feel bad considering it is a point and shoot camera now on the back of the camera there's another another nice touch this film door is covered in a leather likee material now I do kind of expect that a lot of the cameras that you'll be finding uh don't have this leatherette in good shape uh so keep an eye out on it and also maybe uh keep an eye out for Mia M's that have the rubber here Dev Vulcanizing uh so those are probably pretty common problems for cameras of this vintage now for controls there are not many it is a point and shoot camera to be honest you know but it does have a reasonably good feel for you know what things you do get to control for example you got a two-stage shutter and you half press it to Prime Focus and fully depress it to take a photo and uh we'll come back to this in a bit there are some interesting things about this camera but most on the mostly on the whole it's it's quite good you get a good distinction between priming the focus and taking a photo and for other knobbies and button you got sliders here to rewind your film and you might have noticed earlier a slider here to activate the Flash and another lever here for controlling your self timer now this camera legitimately shines compared to its contemporaries in the area of the viewfinder I'm not talking the parallx correction or the focus or the um focus scale but I'm talking about what happens when you actually depress the uh half press the shutter what actually happens is that the scale actually moves when the camera primes the focus it tells you beforehand where it thinks the focus is going to be and it does it using you know your standard pictograms whether it's one person two people a group of people or Mountain so you can generally see where your camera is trying to focus before you click the shutter and this sounds like a no-brainer but more trendy cameras like my Olympus mu1 it just indicates that it had Focus but it doesn't tell you what it's on and cameras like the Canon AF 352 have actually a super similar system for indicator where you got a focus scale on the bottom and a needle that tells you where it's going but that one on the af35 2 only moves once the photo is taken so let's say you're taking a head shot of one of your friendos and you click the focus indicator on the m mamia m if it say flies into the mountains area but you're at like portrait distance range you probably would you know reframe and not take the shot whereas on the Canon af35 you might have taken the shot seen the um focus IND indicator go all the way to the mountains and then gone huh I got to re shoot that so that's kind of annoying so the m m to me it has actually saved me quite a couple shots since you know these are ads focusing systems and I do kind of double check it by using that Focus scale so I don't just blindly press the button all the way down and take a photo so you know I'm quite glad that it's set up this way and it's kind of weird that more camera systems or from the '90s or ' 80s aren't set up this way considering that you know I assume they knew that the systems were fairly rudimentary and kind of prone to missing so with the mimia m it is honestly super nice that you can kind of double check the camera now this camera does also have some Oddball quirks there is actually as I mentioned before a rudimentary anti-shake system if it detects that the user is mash the shutter button down instead of taking a deliberate slow press the camera actually won't fire I if it thinks that you might end up getting a blurry image so I personally found this kind of annoying because I thought that on a couple of my shots that I was fairly stable and I pressed the shutter down only to realize that it wasn't actually firing till I slowed down half pressed fully pressed slower so something to just keep in mind uh another thing if is that this camera uh the uh film inside or inside the film housing it doesn't read DX coding I actually consider it a plus since I shoot a lot of expired film so I like being able to manually set the iso so I can compensate for my poopy film and you do that by twisting the ring here mine is super stiff and kind of terrible but it does generally work uh and all this really is doing is limiting the light that goes in the CDs uh meter there now the last thing I do want to talk about about is related to autofocus again and you know this being a point8 shoot system there are a few automated features that are kind of a bit annoying with the system for example the autofocus lamp I don't know if it's it's actually not going to come on now I think cuz there's a lot of light where I'm shooting but let's see if I can force it on there we go here if it thinks it's too dark this AF lamp will shine irrespective of what you think and there's no option to turn it off so I find that a bit annoying and I think it's probably a lot tiny bit distracting now I did lie though there's one other thing I do want to talk about so this camera it technically doesn't have a power well it does have a power switch but it kind of hilarious so there's a switch on the side of the lens barrel and when it's depressed like this you cannot press the shutter and it effectively acts as a power off switch when it's depressed and when it's not depressed you can fire the shutter and I know what you're thinking what the heck well the original intention was that uh you would use use the mimia supplied front cap and it would depress this button and act as an off button however I can Sly say that mine didn't come with the front cap but no matter I actually 3D printed one and it works all the same so with that now on the cap I cannot de press the shutter and accidentally fire the camera and it is off so you know if you have one of these and you have a 3D printer I'm going to post the STL file online so you could print it and use it it's quite a snug fit so it shouldn't fall off but you know I have not seen a single ad online that included the front cap most of them appeared to be lost to time damn you time shooting them M me at M image quality and autofocus so the optic on this camera I find quite sharp I find that on the scans that I get it's pretty awesome and the fact that this is 2.8 means that it's reasonably fast for a point in shoot you know it's more in line with cameras like the Nikon af600 or the mew2 or Canon AF 352 getting that faster 2.8 rather than the 3.5 lens you see on some other cameras I do kind of find that there's kind of you know the shouter speed is a little bit limiting uh but you know the camera will then just stop down as it has to uh in order to you know get the shot but it does mean that you're not going to get a huge amount of background separation with the lens in on a sunny day since it'll have to stop it down but you know for me I think I'm going to try to shoot slower films and see if I can get some more of that delicious blur now when it comes to sharpness and color I found that the images have a pretty nice rendering to them uh although I I do got to say again I shoot a lot of expired film so maybe take the colors and rendering with a bit of a grain of salt but personally I find that the optical formula of this mimia 38 mm yeah 38 mm Stacks up against popular pointy shoot cameras of the time now in terms of autofocus I know I already kind of covered the way that it works you got to half press and it'll Prime the system but I really can't stress how useful that this system is compared to other point and shoot cameras the only other point issue camera that I have that kind of offers a similar system to this is the Manila himatic af2 but that uh system display is more rudimentary now the other thing I didn't mention that I should now is the AF speed once this thing actually gets primed uh when the system actually fires the uh shutter the entire lens assembly kind of shoots forward and it is really quick to get the AF into position and then once it takes a shot the motor a motor engages and the lens kind of resets back to where it was before it seems like it's kind of some sort of spring based travel that where it just like pops into the correct position and then rewinds it back I'm not really sure how exactly it works but it is pretty quick definitely faster than the me1 that I have and it really does make this camera more like convenient and actually nice to use as a PO and shoot [Music] [Music] e [Music] [Music] recommendation and conclusion this is where things get a bit dicey the current going rate for this camera appears to be anywhere between 60 USD and 150 USD that's kind of a lot I mean if you can find one for 20 Canadian bucks it's a great deal but I think even at $60 it's not too bad if you're in the market for a point in shoot film camera but here's the other thing now the some other cameras are more expensive than this and you know the Mew the af35 the Nikon af600 the Manta htic af2 they have something that this camera doesn't have uh you can actually find those I actually hardly see mimia M cameras of any variant for sale so it kind of makes it hard to find but Rarity aside this is easily a camera that I would recommend and if you can find one it has so many weird niceties to it that I actually think taking pictures with it is fairly easy even though it has a couple weird quirks uh and again the manual ISO control I find really useful especially if you're also someone that likes playing with you know expired film and you like having some parameters to control uh and really again the star of the show for this camera is that Auto Focus system not the speed not the accuracy but the visual indicator that offers the user a sober second thought which I think is worth its weight in gold which you know it's not a lot of gold but it's worth it now again if you can't find a Mia M but you want a similar AF Arrangement albeit a tiny bit simpler like I said the menola hetic af2 would be my next recommendation so you know look for that also expect a video on that camera at some point in the future it's quite good now I really do think that this camera is an excellent pointy shoot camera and as long as you can get over its relative size it is chunkier than the M Mew or the af600 by quite a bit but you know it's quite nice so you know that I think is the really the only place where this camera falls short in its bigness but that's all I got for this video what do you think of the mimia M does anyone here have one of these uh did anyone buy one when it was new uh I was not a thing when these were made so no comment from me but you know do you have other point2 cameras that you like and what are they if you do have them with that don't forget to like comment sub subscribe and maybe a super thanks if you're into that till next time bye
