e [Music] well howdy everyone good to have you here it is three nights before the exam and we are going to go over units 1 through three tonight so just to let you know a couple things off the bat we we I'll be doing this tomorrow night same thing go through units 4 through 6 and then uh what is it Sunday night so Tuesday night uh units 7 through n so same time same place uh we're going to do our best to go through all of it uh so it'll be roughly 90 minutes long to get through the content um three units tonight three units you know each night uh and then um it will be posted directly after um we're done here on the channel so y'all can uh you know use it if if you want to whatever so um also uh if y'all want to it's become a yearly tradition you want me to shout out your teachers or something like that uh please feel free to do so through the super chats unfortunately I can't do everybody because there quite a few of you guys on here which I love but uh you know we got to keep it uh got to keep it controlled here so just so you know um I can only read shout outs the super chats uh that are submitted before 9:30 p.m. eastern time so you know you do the math whatever is whatever so um 9:30 p.m and I will shout out until my voice can no longer shout so it's already happening uh but anyway it's you know you got you got this exam coming up in three days and I know yall stressed I've been watching this uh um chat fly by uh y'all are you know pretty uh anxious and uh so I think we need to loosen up a little let's let's start with a joke so um well I don't know if you guys knew this but I am building a model of Mount Everest and um my wife came in the other day and she said is it to scale and I said no it's to look at it's to look at oh my gosh all right well with that I reckon we ought to go ahead and get this party started with unit one the global tapestry so the time period here is 1 1200 to 1450 and the big idea for this whole unit uh is that it emphasizes State building across the world specifically how various States demonstrated continuity Innovation and diversity with the states that came before them so this is kind of a weird place to start you know the the the curriculum but basically what we're going to do is fly in you know around the world drop in on these you know uh these states that are going strong during this time see how they're doing uh but what you need to emphasize here what you need to really uh cram into those brain folds at this point is how how are they related to what came before are they changing things are they continuing things is there Innovation with what came before that's what you need to uh keep in mind so we're going to break this down into uh Big Ideas uh for unit one uh I've got six B Big Ideas and the big idea number one is this song China maintained and Justified its rule through Confucianism and an imperial bureaucracy Buddhism continued to shape shape China's society and the song economy flourished during this period so State Building in song China there are basically Al two sources of strength that I mentioned here in the big idea excuse me um and this is an example of a continuity okay continuity with with previous Chinese dynasties so uh so two sources of strength number one confusion ISM so confusion ISM basically is just sort of like a hierarchical understanding of reality like everybody has their place and as long as everybody defers to everybody else and obeys and you know uh treats with dignity all that sort of thing then you have peaceful Society so this was there was a Revival in the the Song Dynasty uh but they kind of carried that over from a previous Dynasty namely the tong Dynasty and uh and so confusion ism is is one way that uh that the song China is essentially um building strength uh to in their State uh secondly um well I should say this is sort of subo uh underneath the heading of Confucianism they int reintroduced a um the Civil Service examination or I should say they expanded the civil service exam and basically um this helped bring order and stability okay also it created a meritocracy for Bure bureaucratic jobs so you know people could secure bureaucratic positions based on Merit not birth or class like if the best person got the job and not you know the the emperor's Uncle Randy so that's the idea of the Civil Service examination but also the second thing that uh ch song China did during this period in order to um sort of consolidate and uh expand its rule is uh by the introduction and expansion of an imperial bureaucracy okay so I just mentioned them but a bureaucracy in case you've forgotten all this time in all this time uh is B basically appointed officials that carry out the the Empire's policies all throughout the Empire okay so the this is not new to song China like a bureaucracy had existed for centuries but the Song Dynasty expand Ed it and through it were able to consolidate their power so that's two of the ways two of the key factors of State Building in song China also um there was Buddhism okay so Buddhism was a result of outside influence right it was uh it uh originated in India but um it was itself innovated upon as it came into China so this is innovation so remember talking about continuity or change Innovation this is one of them so when Buddhism came into China uh The Innovation was essentially Chan Buddhism okay so it was sort of like Buddhism syncretized with a more uh indigenous Chinese philosophy namely Daoism put them together mix them up in a pot you got chan Buddhism okay so that's an innovation but then there's the song economy and baby it was purin uh during this period so it flourished the song economy flourished because of several Innovations okay so number one everybody's favorite Champa right where's my choa rice gang at let me know um the so choa rice came in from um the Champa Kingdom and what is you know modern Vietnam there we go there there it is oh my gosh I love y'all okay uh hope that was worth your your F minute cool down um anyway so CH choma rice was a major Innovation uh we'll talk more about that in a second also there was the uh construction of the Grand Canal or the expansion of the Grand Canal U which was BAS basically an internal Waterway uh you know transportation system that enabled China to become the most populous trading center in the world and so all this and more that I did not mention um gave way to the commercialization of the song economy which is to say things were going pretty well for China and that leads us to big idea number two as the Abbasid caliphate was falling apart y are still on the Champa rice I love it everybody loves Champa rice um so as the abasa Calif was falling apart new Islamic political entities emerged and they engaged in significant expansion while creating the occasion for intellectual Innovations and transfers okay so as the song was flourishing Sor my kids are upstairs if you hear that uh the song as the Song Dynasty was flourishing the abased caliphate was crumbling and as that was happening new Islamic Empires begin to rise so you got the Delhi sultanate in Northern India you've got the mlook sultanate in Egypt and you know into the Levant um and both of these were different from the Abbasid which was kind of like the boss Islamic empire before this period um in that they were turkic and not primarily Arab or Persian so even so I mean even though there's a different ethnicity there the these these two Islamic uh Empires that I mentioned they still rely on many of the same practices to govern as the Abbasid so you know taking together this you know all these states form a cultural region known as daral Islam now also under this heading you need to understand how Islam spread and what were the effects of it and that sort of thing so there were several ways that Islam spread number one through military expansion okay so like Deli sultanate we'll talk about that in the next big idea lots of pew pew lots of uh you know expansion through conflict second way it expanded was through Merchants so during this period uh there was a Revival of trade on the Silk Roads which which is an example of cultural diffusion uh for example in West Africa these you know Urban centers are created um Urban centers grow in power and those create the occasions for you know a whole class of literate officials uh and and as they um begin to embrace Islam it kind of provide it connects them into the larger trading network of um darl Islam and kind of creates a religious religious legitimacy uh to their state alsoe spring Islam is the the sufis so this is sort of like a mystical sect of Islam um that was very much able to adapt to local forms and cultures which made spreading it uh much much easier now also Under The Heading of Islamic Empires we need to talk about intellectual Innovations and transfers so Innovations uh I'm just going to throw out a couple of examples here uh mathematics okay we get the development of algebra and trigonometry uh we also have uh Literature Like long form poetry and that sort of thing then there were intellectual transfers so um Muslims in Spain for example translated the Greek Classics into Arabic thing you know Plato Aristotle those kinds of guys um and if you've ever read or ridden uh uh spaceship earth in Epcot you'll know that uh it it was because of them that we were able to um you know get those translated into it sort of creates the conditions for the the Renaissance Revival of those ideas uh so appreciate it guys uh hopefully you learned that you know in this class as well and not just in Spa of birth but hey take it where you can get it anyway um also uh they adapted and adopted or I should say adopted and adapted um papermaking technology from China which was then transferred to Europe and would later play a huge role in the spread of European ideas via the printing press like the Protestant Reformation and the Renaissance Etc that leads us to big idea number three oh I forgot to mention um with these shoutouts um I will be doing some of them between the units I can't I I don't want to break our stride now I'll be doing some of them between the units so after unit one I'll do some shout outs after unit two do some shout outs and then after unit three when we're done I'll just do them all so whatever's left I'll do them all after that so just so you know big idea number three Hinduism Buddhism and Islam deeply influence state building in South and Southeast Asia so it's not too big it's not too much to say that religion is a big deal in State Building efforts in South and Southeast Asia frankly I mean everywhere you know as as we've already seen um but but here in Southeast Asia in South Asia uh well let me just give you some examples so in South Asia uh we had the establishment of the Delhi sulate okay so this is in the north of India and it was Islamic okay um which is- which is strange for their history because you know uh South Asia's dominantly Hindu so so the um so the Delhi salate is set up uh some of the Hindus do convert uh but many of them did not um and you know some of the conversions many of the conversions uh I don't know how to quantify it but uh many of them were you know about social Mobility from lower casts and you know that sort of thing so they never um the the deli sulate the rulers of the deli sulate were never able to really maintain an efficient bureaucracy and and that was you know that meant they had difficulty consolidating power over the various regions of India so that's the north that's a deli salate then in the South uh we had the VJ anara Empire so this was established as a Hindu Kingdom Here it was actually ironically two brothers from the deli sultanate who had converted to Islam for that reason that I just said like social mobility and then they were sent by the Empire uh or by the salate down to the south in order to claim that territory but when they got there they just went ahead and converted back to Hinduism and established a rival Empire okay so that's just a brief little thing about uh South Asia let's go to Southeast Asia so we're talking about you know Indonesia Malaysia Cambodia Thailand Laos Vietnam Etc I mean those are today's names um but that's the region we're talking about so uh this area which is a lot of islands uh definitely seab based so um so there's huge Merchant activities uh here um seab based Merchant activities so Merchants introduced Hinduism to this region and Buddhism as well which becomes the basis for new kingdoms I'll give you an example of each so the shijia Empire which ended around 1025 uh was Hindu and they prospered by taxing ships uh that were using their sea Lanes excuse me uh and then there's the majapahit kingdom in it was roughly 1293 to 15 20ish um which was Buddhist uh and also prospered similarly by trading trading controlling uh trade routes so going back to the main idea for this unit there was continuity in how these religions shaped Society but there was diversity in that those religions affected different Societies in different ways okay that brings us to big idea number four the various civilizations of the Americas developed strong States large Urban centers and complex belief systems okay so I can give you lots of examples we can only you know we're only trying to hit the Big Ideas here so I'll just give you three good examples the kokia uh the mishika and the Inca um well okay actually at this point you you really only need to know one good example so kokia mishika Inca those are all great but we're going to focus on the mishika which is to say the Aztec so they demonstrated continuity in State Building with earlier American states most notably the Maya so you know they had this magnificent capital city tenos which had these uh Monumental ziggurats and marketplaces with it's like a population of like 200,000 people or something like that was is astonishing it's huge um when the European uh uh Sailors came over and saw it they like pooped their pantaloons it was it was astonishing but um as far as State Building goes what what was one very significant thing for the mishika or the Aztec and don't get confused mishika are the people Aztec is he's sort of the official ruling title um was the tribute system so it's important to know that in the Aztec empire you know this was essentially a decentralized state but and what that means is there's not like a like you know one guy in charge of everything I mean there was that to some degree but it was very um there were lots of centers of power okay uh of varying degrees so they inherited that sort of model from the Maya okay so that's one good example of continuity and as the Aztec expanded their control they sent local Governors to exact tribute from those that they conquered so tributes could be you know money or land or goods and services or military service or whatever so that meant that the mishika could exercise political dominance over all these distant lands as their empire grows in terms of geographical scale without being directly involved in those places so you know it's a good thing to do if you want to you know conquer a lot of people's crap all of this They carried over from the Maya lots of continuity with the Maya including you know just for poops and Giggles the practice of human sacrifice uh and anyway we don't have time to talk about that so big idea number five we got six big ideas in this one African State Building was facilitated through participation in trade networks and religion can I just stop for a second and say something that like this is such a common mistake it's probably not going to cost you any points I don't know but just Public Service Announcement Africa is not a country so if you're writing and you know I mean if you say something country of Africa or something I'm sure the readers will look at that and say ah yeah I know what they mean but it's a continent there's lots of different states and countries within okay that public service announcement over so let's talk about a great example of an African State during this time that that grew in power and influenced because of trade the Great Zimbabwe so Zimbabwe prospered because of trade uh because of Agriculture because of their Rich deposits of gold and you know integral to their prosperity was participation in the Indian Ocean trade Network so we'll talk more about that in unit two but by by participating in that they were you know connected to East Africa and the middle east and south Asia and East Asia and so Merchants had a big hand in the development of as a result of this of a new language okay that language was Swahili which was a blend of Bantu um which is sort of you know an indigenous set of languages um in in subsaharan Africa and then Arabic okay so you see the fact that Swahili is this new language uh shows how uh integral trade was to them because it's it's all the Islamic Merchants that are coming in and helping them to grow in significance and power so you've got a whole new blending of languages um to put that on display uh so the capital city was you know the Great Zimbabwe and at its height it had like 20,000 people and and which is a lot in case you you're keeping score um but you know overgrazing or something it's somewhat a mystery um kind of just led to the abandonment of the city at the end of the 1400s anyway in terms of diversity um you got to keep in mind that not all states within Africa were the same so Africa is not a country but not all states in Africa were the same like in fact they were very different from each other so you had the Great Zimbabwe which uh was deeply influenced by Islam but then for example you had Ethiopia the kingdom of Ethiopia um further north and on the East Coast it emerged in the 12th century as a Christian kingdom and so you know they put that religion on display through Monumental architecture with these massive Stone churches uh that they've built and you know like that's the reason why they did that did that is because they want to put their power on display and an Ethiopian Christianity was actually it kind of developed largely apart from Roman Catholic and and uh Eastern Orthodox flavors of Christianity and so it became a distinct syncretic blend of Christianity and the traditional beliefs of the Ethiopians and that leads us to the last big idea for this unit big idea number six State Building in Europe was characterized by religious belief feudalism and decentralized monarchies okay so religion may I say it again is significant in State Building and so significant cultural continuity here in Europe was the influence of the Roman Catholic church and so you know both universities and artists uh were typically men of the church um however diversity there's also a very strong Muslim presence on the Iberian Peninsula which is say spainish area um now they happen to be that that Muslim influence was sort of wiped out uh after 1492 thanks to um Ferdinand and Isabella and their Reconquista um and that's going to lead to a Revival of Catholicism in Spain and the impulse to spread Catholicism across the world but I get ahead of myself we're going to talk about that tomorrow night additionally uh within uh Europe there's a small but influential Jewish population um although that is diminished during the Reconquista but regardless uh there is diversity uh in in belief systems now maybe most important for Europe is to understand that their uh Power structures their State Building efforts were very much decentralized okay decentralized political systems and uh and the the term you need to associate that with that is feudalism so feudalism without getting too far into the weeds just a system of loyalty that exists between you know the various classes okay and it's it's Bas it's based on land ownership and so you know it organized Society into you know Kings and nobility and knights and then the peasantry and you know the peasantry you know they were there just to work the land and provide produce to the Lords and their lives were tied to the land and so um and so you know basically we're talking about the larger organizing political and social order um the feudalism with is within the larger rubric of something called the manorial system um so the manor basically contains the whole village and you know there are many surfs that you know live their entire life uh without ever having left the manor um and so you know it's it's very um there's like these pockets of manners all over uh and there's centers of power in each of them so power is decentralized okay also in Europe you need to know a particular Innovation known as the three field system this is an AGG ultural Innovation so in this system crops were rotated through three Fields two of them were planted one of them remained fow so it could you know replenish its nutrients and then they would switch uh and that enabled you know much more far more mouth holes to be fed and you know it's a good thing um now from about 1,000 to 1450 which is the end of our period right now there was a significant amount of change this is where we get into that diversity so there's basically the rise of monarchs who Consolidated more land and power under themselves which begins to shift power away from feudal Lords into the Kings okay so these kings are the ones who are going to establish bureaucracies to carry out their will uh they conscript massive standing armies and they go blow each other's crap up and you know whatever but that's one example of diversity and that my friends is all you need to know about unit one actually it's not all you need to know about unit one there's I'm trying to hit the Big Ideas here we can't I can't do like all nine months of what you learned in this night if you if you need like some more specific help uh make sure that you um check out my himler review guide it it really it's got everything uh that you could need for the test it's linked in the description I think if you like like the way I do things then that thing you know it's going to help you so I reckon we ought to do some shout outs we got through unit one good job guys you got through it you got through it hope it's helping and let's do a few of these keep it clean keep it clean all right we'll start with Jamie can't do it uh we got three of these and your boy needs some sleep and y'all need some sleep frankly so um so I'll only read them until you know if I'll read them as late as I need to just they have to say nine at least you know 9:30 or before on them all right enough of that let's go to unit two networks of exchange okay so uh unit one it's all about the methods that powers around the world used to build up their states but in this unit which takes place in the same time period it's not a different time period same time period this is all about how those various states were connected to each other so big idea number one networks of exchange expanded in geographical scope and led to increasing interactions between states all right this is a beefy one y'all so you know settle in so when we talk about networks of exchange we're just talking about trading routes okay so there's three big ones that you need to know the Silk Roads the Indian Ocean Network and the trans Saharan trade network uh the Silk Roads um mainly we're exchanging uh uh luxury goods along these routes uh mainly for elite markets most prominent of which is not surprisingly silk and as as this trading route and frankly all of them grew in popularity several cities along those routes uh grew in power and prominence because of their uh importance to the facilitation of trade so you have to understand these states and cities that grew up primarily because they were in strategic locations along these trade routes good example is kashgar okay so this is at the Eastern edge of China it's located at the convergence of two of these major routes uh of the Silk Roads um and as a result you know it hosts its own highly profitable markets and eventually becomes a center for Islamic scholarship and then you've another example is samarcand in Central Asia uh similar to how um cashar grew now the growth of Commerce along the Silk Roads was you to understand that it is facilitated by Innovations and transportation and Innovations in commercial technology so let's talk about one example of each Innovations in transportation the Caravan Sarai so this is basically a series of ins and guest houses and you know they spaced about a Day Day's Journey apart and they provided two functions one they provided safety from Bandits and plunderers those rascally uh Bunch um and then they were also centers of cultural exchange so this is the great time to mention which I'm something I'm going to mention over and over and over again is that these trade routes are not these networks of exchange are not just about transporting goods for people to buy when um when people are Merchants are traveling along these roads they're also bringing their culture with them they're also bringing their technology with them and that's how uh religions spread that's how cultur that's a different agricultural um uh uh ultural technology or you know whatever seeds and new foods and that sort of thing that's how that spreads like so so lots of things are spreading uh through the um uh these networks of exchange so that's transportation technology the Caravan but then there's also uh Innovations in animal technology namely yolks uh Saddles stirups all of these made traveling on camels and you know horses and oxen far easier and more efficient and that leads to more trade then there was Innovations in commercial Technologies which helped facilitate trade so first the development of money economies okay this first developed in China and the emphasis here is that you know this specialized money economy specialized in paper money which is you know lighter to carry than silver and gold and that greatly facilitated increased trade second commercial technology that facilitated all this trade was new forms of credit and so this is based on the Chinese model um and as a result of all this cultural interaction uh European States introduced banking houses based on those Chinese models um a lot more we can say about the Silk Roads but that's a basic idea now let's move to the Indian Ocean Network so up till about 1500 the Indian Ocean network was the world's most significant seab based Trade Network and what made this network possible was understanding Monsoon patterns like which way the wind was blown and they figured it out good on them um but during this time just like the Silk Roads this network is growing so what caused the growth of this network says you well says I it was a desire for goods not found at home number one things like Chinese porcelain Indian cotton uh pepper spices from Southeast Asia slaves Ivory gold from the Swahili Coast in Africa etc etc um that's what facilitates trade but also there were technological innovations okay you had things like the latine sale you had magnetic compass um the astrol new ships to new ship designs like the Chinese junk and the Arab Dows Etc and because these ships could carry so much cargo that made it cheaper to ship goods which meant that the Indian Ocean trade um facilitated the spread of more common goods as opposed to the Silk Roads which specialized in luxury goods because and that's that's a good thing to keep in mind as you're writing these uh essays is that you know these these trade networks they weren't all the same they they did some of the same things there's much to compare with them um but uh because of the medium uh through which these goods were exchanged like uh camels for example or big ships that determined what kinds of things would be traded okay so Silk Roads luxury goods Indian Ocean also luxury goods but lots more common goods okay also the Indian Ocean trade Network as we' I've kind of alluded to um prior to this uh was significant in the spread of Islam so so Islam is a faith that praised the work of merchants uh Merchants are you know Muhammad was a merchant um that means that as the faith spread throughout afro Eurasia it creates connections and friendly relations among Muslim Traders all throughout the Indian Ocean and that facilitates more trade and then just like on the Silk Roads the Indian Ocean network uh provides the occasion for the growth of powerful cities or uh trading cities and States so for example the Swahili city states uh you know they acted as Brokers for goods originating in the African interior uh like gold and ivory and enslaved people uh Etc and as a result of that brokerage those cities and states those city states grew in power and wealth then in Southeast Asia for example you've got the sulate of malaka on the melee Peninsula and because of its control of the straight of malaka which is like a like a key choke point Waterway through um southeast Asia this like tiny kind of quaint small fishing Village grew very fast like rapidly uh from all the wealth that they accumulated uh by trade um into you know one of the most significant states in southeast Asia oh my big idea went away I know you guys want that no that's number two all right there we go uh all right so the effects of uh this expansion of trade uh in the Indian Ocean network was the estab one of the effects is the establishment of diaspora communities okay this is you know these are settlements of people uh living apart from their Homeland so you've got araban Persian communities established in East Africa you've got Chinese communities established in Southeast Asia and you don't have you don't have to know these things for poops and Giggles the reason why it's important to know these diaspora communities existed is because they helped facilitate trade by making those necessary connections that encouraged economic relationships okay and again just like in Silk Roads there are also cultural and technological transfers occurring uh along the Indian Ocean uh Network so probably the most significant is the Voyages of junga which uh was a voyage sponsored by Imperial China um you know he jungha led a series of massive Chinese Expeditions throughout the Indian Ocean um like early 15th century and you know under the authority of the Ming Dynasty and the purpose was to visit distant places throughout all the Indian Ocean uh uh territory and enroll them in the Chinese tribute system and so the result was that um the result was that China significantly increased their power and influence over the Indian Ocean trade as a result of those that brings us to the final networks of exchange that you need to know the trans Saharan trade which connected North Africa and the Mediterranean with the interior of and and West Africa so causes for the growth of this network uh Innovation and trans Transportation Technologies are you picking up a theme here like yes it's all of them Innovations and transportation Technologies so here um we got the introduction of the Arabian camel to North Africa in the early centuries of the Common Era um this is long before our period starts but uh that makes trade across this expansive desert possible but many centuries later here's the technology that you need to remember a saddle was developed for the camel which enable camels to carry much larger loads across the desert and thus facilitate more interregional trade uh and also expanding the geographical range of existing trade routes now just like in uh these other two networks we talked about in Africa by the 12th century new empires Rose in in Africa that were spurred on uh by trade and also influenced the growth of trade so several I can mention here I'm only going to mention one the Empire of Mali so Islam is introduced to mly in the 9th century and um during our period that Faith connected them commercially to Muslim merchants all across afro Eurasia excuse me um and Molly you know they profited especially from the gold trade but they also grew fabulously Wealthy by taxing Merchants for um and Merchants and their goods that were Bound for basically all destinations in West Africa if there's one to associate with Molly it would be our boy Mana Musa he's the most powerful and influential ruler uh in Molly and with the expansion of M's power under the influence of Mansa Musa he further monopolized trade uh between the North and interior of the continent both increasing the wealth of moli and facilitating the growth of existing networks woo and that's all for big idea number one it was a big one the the last three aren't as uh chunky so let's get to big idea number two a major effect of the growth of trading routes was cultural diffusion I kind of hinted at this before and uh so let's talk about it now so over over these networks of exchange uh there were significant cultural transfers okay so one of the most significant being religion or belief systems sometimes you'll see that on the on your exam that'll say belief systems it's technically because you know there's other things that fit under belief systems besides just religion but you know basically talking about uh religion um so Buddhism entered China from India how I mentioned that earlier but how did it do it through the Silk Roads okay um but also remember Buddhism changed in China we talked about Chan Buddhism but then uh Buddhism was exported to Japan where it was changed again and adopted as Zen Buddhism okay so you can see how these cultural exchanges along these trading routes lead to Innovation uh Hinduism and Buddhism entered southeast Asia through trade as well so mentioned the sriii Empire which was Hindu uh and then the majapahit kingdom which was Buddhist Islam spread uh throughout subsaharan Africa and Asia as a result of trade and Conquest so again Swahili being a blend of banto and Arabic there was a language that facilitated trade uh you had timbuk 2 which became an international center for Islamic education and in South Asia Islam made a significant impact with the arrival of the Delhi sultanate also there were along these networks of exchange uh literary and artistic transfers I already mentioned the fact that Islamic scholars translated Greek Classics into Arabic and preserved them for later movements that we'll talk about tomorrow uh then there were scientific and technological innovations Champa rice there it is again there's a lot of overlap in these two units but that's probably the best one to remember uh the introduction of choa Rise by the way uh provided the occasion because it was you could Harvest it more it was was ripened quickly um it increased the food supply in China and that led to an explosive growth in population um but now we need to understand that these in this interconnectedness between all these different places we've been talking about it does we we talked about how it led to the rise of powerful trading cities but it also leads to the fall of different cities and states so when we talked about earlier uh one examp or two examples of the rise of these powerful cities and states uh Samar can and casgar uh that's because of their strategic location but uh there's an example of the fall of particular States um because of uh because of their you know increasing interconnection uh a good example here would be Baghdad so as the Mongols came into contact with the Abbasid Empire in the East they sacked Baghdad in 1258 leading to a significant period of decline for the once lovely and vigorous City uh we'll talk about the Mongols uh in a moment but just an example of a fall of a city uh also you need to know that this interconnectedness facilitates Travelers okay several you can know iban patuda uh Marco Polo Mar uh Marjorie Kemp um each of them the the reason why they could go and travel and write their travel down write their travel dialogues down is because of the The increased access to an interconnection across the world because of these trading routes uh and that leads us to big idea number three we got four big Ideas here number three the increasing interconnection facilitated by trading routes led to significant environmental consequences okay so a significant effect of the increasing connectivity of the world um during this period is the spread of various crops and diseases across trade routes so so careful here CU When I say uh agriculture agriculture in the U or I say when I say environmental consequences in the um in the big idea we're not just uh environmental you know talk about agriculture yeah that sounds like environmental but disease doesn't sound like environmental it's classified as environmental anyway just if you see that word on your exam you know environmental consequence just know that includes disease okay so let me give you a few examples of each um as far as agriculture goes uh you got crops that spread across these um networks of exchange uh bananas is a good one bananas coming into Africa so the banana was originally domesticated in Southeast Asia but it was introduced to Africa thanks to the Indian Ocean trade okay now you're like who cares it's it's a banana well it was a big deal it was a big deal so like from the from the city states on the coast uh banana cultivation then spreads further Inland where it provides um you know Variety in people's diets which then leads to population growth uh in Additionally the cultivation of the banana became the basis for the rise of powerful chiefdoms and later kingdoms okay and then another agricultural transfer can you guess I mean it's choa rice it's choa rice okay so in this in units one through two if you get a question uh you're not going to get a DBQ from unit one but uh if you get a leq or something I mean you're not going to do too bad to just throw in choma rice I mean it might not be it might not be related but it's it's it shows up a lot okay everybody loves choa rice so um I mean don't just throw it in there for if you know what what you're talking about but if you have no idea what the question is about start writing about Chomper rice you never know anyway so crops are disseminated uh via these networks of exchange then diseases as well so this increasing connectivity created the occasion for the spread of one of the most deadly diseases in world history namely the Bubonic plague also known by its cheerier name the black death um it it first you know was documented it first erupted in 1331 uh in northern China and then it travels rapidly across the Silk Roads uh in you know the carriages uh of of merchants in in the caravanserai and in the cargo holds of uh Indian Ocean ships on the Indian Ocean Network and they spread rapidly from you know ports of trade outward to the general population that's what's interesting is if you look at the a map of the spread of the Black Death the Bubonic plague it's and then you overlay it with a map of trade routes like the Silk Roads and the Indian Ocean like that's where that's how it spreads that so so anyway very important okay uh in the middle East uh I mean this is It's hard to overestimate just how devastating this disease was uh in the Middle East the plague killed like a third of the population in Europe it killed almost half the population which is a lot just in case you're wondering and on that cheery note uh that leads us to our last big idea of unit two uh big idea number four the Mongols we going to talk about the Mongols y'all don't even worry about it the Mongols created the largest land BAS Empire in history which facilitated further interconnection and interaction across afro afro Eurasia all right now when it comes to the Mongols Ian everybody loves to talk about their you know horseback and the arrows and the fight you know how they organize their armies and all the you know the body count all the yeah that it's all whatever un fortunately none of that is too important for how you for for this exam that you're about to take what's most important about the Mongols excuse me is understanding how they created the conditions for increased interaction among all these distant States and cultural and technological transfers that's the important thing so they you know they get the largest land-based Empire in history but what's important to know is how did did that control how to control of that land-based Empire of of you know Empire of that size how did that create the occasion for more people to interact and and cultural techn and culture and Technology to spread to different places and change and you know whatever so that's the idea so let's talk about increased interaction as a result of the Mongols so the Silk Road trading networks as a general rule worked best when large Empires controlled their routes because they were able to provide safety and continuity along the roads and like there's not a better example of a large empire controlling the Silk Roads than the Mongol Empire they controlled dang near all of it so what's interesting is that the Mongols themselves they as a culture they produced no sellable Goods or very few if any um nor did they participate that much in long-distance trade but as the entire Eurasian world came under their domination they vigorously the Mongols did uh encouraged international trade and extracted great wealth as the facilitators of Commerce on the Silk Roads Additionally the Mongol Empire also led to an unprecedented increase in communication and cooperation across their great Empire so as an example Persian and Chinese courts often work together across distance we're talking about different sides of Asia here um Asia and you know in the Middle East different sides of that huge uh land mass um they're they're working together across distance sending skilled Artisans back and forth exchanging ambassadors sharing Military Intelligence etc etc and so and that's because the Mongols controlled these routes and they were able to keep them safe and that is why uh this you know period of Mongol rule is often called the Pax mongolica the piece of the Mongols okay so that's um so okay so we'll leave that there now let's also talk about the technological and cultural transfers facilitated by the Mongols so um because it was Mongol policy to send you know skilled people to the various parts of their empire that transfer of people encourage the transfer of technology and ideas and culture so in terms of science and technology uh uh authorities of the Ilan region of the former Mongol Empire yeah I mean I'm jumping ahead here but Mongol Empire falls apart gets fractured into the smaller uh landbased Empires known as ill as Kates excuse me um but anyway um the authorities of the ilc conate region um made significant advances in astronomy um and astronomical tools and so they increased the accuracy of calendars they improved tools like the astrol which enabled accurate plotting and measuring of stars in order to reckon exact locations on the sea were very important facilitating more trade okay um so through those tools in through their massive observatories they were able to predict solar and lunar eclipses with pretty significant accuracy um and interesting tidbit through those predictions those those uh solar and lunar eclipse tables they actually became significant building blocks of Nicholas kernus is heliocentric model of the Galaxy so you know renaiss you know Scientific Revolution thanks Mongols appreciate that um so scientific and techn technological transfers um so so that's the basic idea of the Mongols just emphasize that's not all you need to know about them again you can if you need to know more him review guide down in the description but for now um we really just want to focus on how did they facilitate connection and transfer Etc and that's it that's it for unit two well done well done and uh see if we can knock out a few more of these shout outs but first water All Right Aid force Mr mcginness the Cade and shout out to the best world history teacher Mr K Dr James R shout out to Mr brokenshire ahead and did a bunch more so let's uh let's go back to um let's go back to unit three got one more unit tonight and that's the main show that's the main show so we got to get it done unit three it's all about landbased Empires we only got three big Ideas here um so get get G thyself for the next couple of nights because the units are definitely getting chunkier as we go okay big idea number one various land-based Empires developed and expanded throughout 1450 to 1750 most significantly through the use of gunpowder I don't think I can overemphasize this enough or I don't think I could emphasize this enough and I don't think I could overemphasize how important the concept of gunpowder is uh for these land-based Empires uh during this period you're going to need to know a couple of examples okay so first the Ottoman Empire and again this is this one's sort of like Champa rice Ottoman Empire is all throughout the curriculum they love the Ottoman Empire over at the college board so again if you feel like I don't you open to a leq you have no idea what it's talking about or what you know choma rice could be a good one otoman Empire just start writing whatever you know about the Ottoman Empire again it's the only good strategy if you know nothing about what they're asking you otherwise you know write what you know but the Ottoman Empire back to them so it was founded in the 14th century but it was kind of small but it did grow significantly because of a couple of things that you need to know number one strategic control of the D Nels uh which is a straight um uh in the Mediterranean that you know from that they were able to launch major expansion campaigns and also just like many of the land-based empires will talk about gunpowder okay the adoption of gunpowder weapons so by 1402 uh a lot of Southwestern Europe and Anatolia was under ottoman control by 1453 the Ottomans sack Constantinople and named it istan buul do you know how they did it gunpowder always Gunpowder the answer is always gunpowder here so so one of the ways you know they used this gunpowder was through their Fierce ottoman military uh and probably you know the most important faction of that military you need to remember is the Janis series now these were uh sort of this Elite Squad of sort of like fighting force who were trained in these gunpowder weapons and they happen to be enslaved Christians uh who were converted to Islam and had got an education but they kind of became this Elite Cadre uh that were able to wield these gunpowder weapons and blow a bunch of people's crap up and expand the Empire so that's the Ottomans then we have the savid empire in the Middle East and um I'm sorry I have to have one more uh parenthetical remark here I'm I'm saying all these regions uh Middle East you know southeast Asia all this kind if if when I'm saying these they're not immediately like in the world map of your mind those little regions are not popping up and and lighting up and like oh yeah I know where southeast Asia is oh yeah I know where Middle East says whatever you really need to study those particular regions um on on the map because if if a question asks you about something that happened in the Middle East or you know something happened in uh South Asia and you know if something happen what's a development in South Asia and you start talking about China or like China is not South Asia okay so no points on that so really make sure you understand that's one of the most frequent mistakes we see uh at the national reading is that you know kids often don't know what region is being asked about so just a little just a little tip little I I do what I can anyway savit Empire Middle East um if if I had my you know Brothers about me I would have a map up here for you but I don't maybe I'll put up tomorrow anyway uh safavid it's established in 1501 and under the leadership of sha is male uh it was made into a Shiite uh Muslim Dynasty um and that put it at odds with the mugal and the Ottomans we'll talk about the mugal later um but the mugal and the Ottomans were Sunni Muslims okay we're not going to get into the you know differences between them but the point is um the Islamic Empires during this time they're not all the same okay you got to got to remember that so safavid Shiite or Shia uh and um mugal and ottoman they were sunnis now later sha abas built up the safid mil military and that included the adoption of you guessed it gunpowder weapons and just like the Ottoman Empire the safavid calary uh were you those the guys who ride the horses they they were not much interested in learning to shoot guns from horses and so sha abas established an enslaved Army which again like the Ottomans were Christians from conquered regions then let's talk about the mugal Empire so this is south and um Central Asia uh basically 1526 1730 something maybe 1740 I can't remember uh somewhere around there um so in 1526 a leader named babber um established the mugal Empire by displacing the deli sultanate oh my big idea went away talking too long okay um by uh um what are we talking about oh establishment of mugal so uh establishes the mugal Empire by um displacing the salate how did he do it gunpowder somebody tell me it's gunpowder always gunpowder and so under the leadership of babar's grandson uh abbar mugal rule covered about half of the Indian subcontinent um in South Asia and one of the things to remember about abbar is that he was tolerant of all kinds of religious beliefs I mean pretty significant for you know the time period um and he mely uh administered the Empire eventually those kind of tactics led the mugal to claim nearly the entirety of South Asia another number four the fourth um land-based Empire you need to know during this time is the Ching Dynasty also known as the Manu Empire do not get confused the Manu uh are the ethnic people the Ching Dynasty is the name of the state so um so under Mongol rule like the the conate um was was declining in that region uh and a new um dynasty was established namely the Ming Dynasty we're talking about the Ching Dynasty but I'm just trying to give you context for the Ming Dynasty so by the early 1500s the Ming Dynasty starts weakening uh because of internal Division and external Wars um so in 1636 the Manu people of the north raided China uh established themselves as leaders and begin a new Dynasty the Ching Dynasty now what's most important to remember about the Manu of the Ching Dynasty is that most of the Chinese population were ethnically Han but the Ching rulers were Manu okay that's going to cause a lot of tension we'll come back to that um so those are the four big uh land-based Empires that you need to know those are all required also what you need to understand is that there are significant rivalries between these land-based Empire Empires and so you know as as these Empires were expanding as they do um it it was inevitable that they're going to clash with one another and uh we can talk about lots of clashes I'm only going to give you uh the two most significant uh and you can pick one to remember one is the Soph ofid mugal conflict which was a series of wars fought between two Muslim empire these two Muslim empires in the 17th century both of them had conflicting territorial Ambitions also going to be common with these other uh landbased Empire as I mentioned also conflicting religious beliefs remember Shia versus Sunni okay um and ultimately this conflict led to several Wars over the course of decades and neither of them could claim a clear Victory what's important to remember is that as these land-based Empires were expanding the that expansion caused conflict another example the s High Moroccan conflict in Africa so the Sanai Empire um was very rich uh because of the transar but it began to weaken because of internal divisions again another theme you're going to hear a lot so you know in a surprise Invasion very rude uh the Moroccans invaded and whipped the S hiive and they were able to do that because of anybody why how how did the Moroccans beat uh the sonai who were so powerful what what did they use what they it's gunpowder it's gunpowder uh and and the sonai had none of that so gunpowder baby it's always the answer it leads us to a big idea number two I see gunpowder I see y'all um all right big idea number two rulers of land-based Empires gained power and maintained control by establishing bureaucracies sponsor creation of art centralizing tax collection and developing large militaries okay there's a couple of terms you are for sure going to see on your exam legitimize power and consolidate power and you got to know what those two things mean so when a ruler takes you know pains to legitimize power those are the methods that the ruler uses to communicate who's in charge okay that's legitimizing power consolidating power is the various you know um methods used to trans to transfer power from other groups under a single ruler Okay so legitimized power I'm the one oh my gosh I'm so mad at that thing I don't I cannot figure out how to turn that off uh and it drives me nuts I don't know what I did to trigger fireworks is that it yeah whatever so stupid what am I talking about oh consolidating power okay legitimizing consolidating Power this thing is going to live on the internet and there stupid fireworks okay uh so how did you got to know some examples of how land-based rulers did these two things okay one that's pretty common is the formation of large bureaucracies the Ottomans used a system called Dev shimme um and they use that to staff their Imperial bureaucracy with highly trained individuals um and in in many cases uh in many cases uh enslaved Christians to staff those um bureaucratic positions uh secondly they landbased rulers legitimized and Consolidated their power through the use of military professionals um I already mentioned the Janis series under the Ottoman Empire uh in Japan uh under the Tokugawa shogunate the ancient warrior class known as the samurai uh were put on the government payroll and sort of became like salaried bureaucrats and um and so in that way they maintained peace and functioned as state bureaucrats um also another big one for how rulers legitimize and consolidate their power is through religious ideas and art and Monumental architecture so a good example here over in Europe uh European Kings remember what we talked about in unit one they're starting to grow in power during this time they're consolidating more power under themselves so European Kings are claiming to rule by Divine Right which means that the king or queen is essentially God's representative on Earth and ain't nobody gonna oppose Jesus and his right-hand man so it was a handy uh Doctrine in order to consolidate power poster boy for this Louis the 14th of France um and Louis the 14th is also the poster boy for using architecture to consolidate his rule uh when he built his Palace of versailes uh it's huge it's magnificent uh and to see it it's like I haven't seen it myself but you I'm sure it's even more magnificent person but like it's it's breathtaking and like when you see a a architecture like that you're like oh that guy must be in charge there's no question about it that's the idea of legitimizing power who's in who's in control whoever lives in that house that's the idea but also in terms of consolidating power Versa was a great thing for consolidating power as well he forced much of the nobility the French nobility um to live in the palace and why would he want to do that not cuz he liked their company not cuz they were buddies but he could control them there right there's that means there's less power for the nobility more power for him and what do we call that consolidation of power okay uh so that's in Europe let's talk about we haven't given enough love to the Americas so let's go over to the Americas um in the uh among the mashika in the Aztec Um Kingdom or Empire the there was the Aztec practice of human sacrifice this is an example of using religion to consolidate power um or legitimize power so you know during these rituals rulers put on this huge display of their wealth and you know magnificent pageantry and so that communicates the legitimacy of their power to all the people that are there also a good example here is the Incan Sun Temple of Cusco so you know to facilitate all these festivals of worship Incan rulers built the sun Temple and Cusco which again example of architecture here and these walls their walls were like covered in sheets of gold and the courtyards were filled with golden statues oh my big idea went away again um and so again so rulers were associated with the gods and that means that kind of architecture further legitimized their rule in the eyes of all the people or we can go over to China and talk about how rulers over there Consolidated and legitimized their power no better example here emperor kongi of the Ching Dynasty um he used art to consolidate power and legitimize his power so and this is an interest interesting story so remember the ching were Manu right they were not Han they were different ethnicity than the majority of Chinese population they were Outsiders they came in they took over their crap and they were uh ethnically different from the majority of Chinese the Chinese population so kongi decided to do something about that and he displayed Imperial portraits of himself in prominent places throughout the Empire and in those portraits of himself like he's surrounded by books and it's kind of suggesting that he's like this Confucian Sage okay in other words these portraits were kind of like kongi's PR campaign to convince the Han people that he was in fact a legitimate uh uh ruler in the line of ancient Chinese dynasties cuz look he's got books around him he's basically confus he's he's he's basically uh Han Chinese that's essentially what is trying to communicate um and did that through ART another way rulers uh consolidated their power uh during this time was through tax collection systems and again who cares tax collection the point here is not just to be able to multiply examples of how taxes were collected whatever the point is how did rulers maintain control over their people in these vast landbased Empires okay that's the point of this uh so in the mugal Empire we had the zamar tax collection system and again remember the mugal leaders were Muslim but they ruled over a population in South Asia that was almost entirely Hindu does that sound familiar to what we just talked about in China with the Manchu and the Han same sort of situation going on uh a little South so to consolidate their power uh they had a a tax basically um ordered tax collection to be carried out by a group known as zamindars these were like Elite land owners who were granted authority to tax peasants living on their land on behalf of the Imperial government and this was a significant way that the mugal maintained control or Consolidated power um over their empire and you know kept more power for themselves another example this uh would be the ottoman tax farming system essentially in this system the right to tax the people on behalf of the Empire just kind of went to the highest bidder okay so there's lots of people who wanted the right to tax the people on behalf of the Empire uh because they knew that they could you know if they won that bidding they had the right to collect taxes from a particular group of people they could collect more than was necessary for the Empire send the Empire's necessary uh payment to them and you know just keep whatever was left over for them so anyway regardless it was a boost of income for the ottomans at the beginning of the year when this happened and it was a way to keep um keep the Ottomans in tight control over the vast stretches of their empire then over into the Americas we got the mashika tribute lists um so whenever the Aztecs remember Aztecs the Aztec Empire was very decentralized in terms of power but whenever the Aztecs um conquered a place they gave tribute lists filled with Goods that the place was responsible for sending to the Imperial seat in tribute and so this practice ensured a steady flow uh of a wide variety of goods into the Empire and bonus it can like communicated to all the people who was in charge in those conquered regions okay consolidation of power and that leads us to the final big idea of unit 3 and the final big idea of the evening and then we'll get to the rest of the uh super chats belief systems could play different roles in and among land-based empires in some cases shared beliefs bound people together in other cases conflicting beliefs caused conflict no du okay so let's talk about religion or belief systems uh and we'll talk about Christianity in Europe so since the I mean essentially since the first century CE Christianity had been you know something that bound Europeans together it's like a shared cultural belief among most Europeans again there were pockets of Jews there was a strong Muslim presence um you know what I was talking about earlier um but in general okay but so so that's an that's an example of a belief system bringing people together shared cultural uh um uh language and belief Etc but then an example of it causing conflict in the 16th century we had the Protestant Reformation which caused a significant breakdown of that Unity so 1517 the Reformation begins U Martin Luther denounce this monk actually a Catholic monk uh denounces the corrupt Corrupt Practices of the Catholic Church uh in a little document that he wrote called little do sounds like that was a cute little document it was very significant but it was it was a document that he wrote called a 95 thesis and in the 95 thesis he he challenges all these Corrupt Practices of the church like uh simony and nepotism and the sale of indulgences etc etc um and so the Catholic Church looks at that and says yeah Luther you're a heretic you're excommunicated but here's what's interesting thanks to the recent Advent of the printing press in Europe Luther's ideas were printed in bulk and they spread rapidly throughout Europe and long story short that led to a lasting and major split uh of Christians okay there there was another one the great schism in 1054 don't need to remember that one but here in the Protestant Reformation you got now a major split in a belief system that used to unify people now you have Catholics Roman Catholics and now you have Protestants okay the result of this is that various rulers across Europe either remained Catholic or they imposed protestantism on the people that they ruled and this religious division often intensified political division and that led to a series of War uh religious wars in Europe until like 164 48 when religious wars were basically ended um now in response to the Protestant Reformation the Catholic Church also responded with the Reformation of their own known as the Catholic or The Counter Reformation by the way it's the same thing you see Catholic Reformation or The Counter Reformation same thing don't get confused anyway in the uh in the Catholic Reformation they introduced a lot of reforms so this is a good example of change okay they introduced uh reforms addressing the Corrupt Practices of the church you know they they claim down on simony and nepotism and absenteeism Etc but there's also examples of continuity in the um in the Catholic Reformation so uh at the cath uh uh Catholic of Trent um Council of Trent uh Catholics reaffirmed their ancient doctrines of salvation by faith and works which is you know uh a big complaint of the Protestants uh they reaffirmed the the nature of biblical Authority and you know a host of other ideas that that was causing the friction between them and the Protestants and so by reaffirming those they essentially made that split between Catholics and Protestants permanent okay another case of belief systems causing um either cohesion or conflict um would be the the Sunni Shia split um uh Sunni Shia Muslim um split uh because it begins to intensify during this period as I mentioned before and you know with the conflicts between the mugal and the safavid the ottoman Empires Etc um but sometimes uh belief systems um as they interact with one another like we talked about in unit two through all these networks of exchange sometimes as these belief systems interact different peoples produced new belief systems Innovative belief systems and um you just you only need to know one here so I'll tell you about seism uh and this is in South Asia so out of the interaction of Islam and Hinduism in India it emerged this new faith that demonstrated both continuity and change with both of those systems okay so Sikhism um is is sort of a blending of Hinduism and Islam but so there's some continuity between seism and the two you know parent religions uh but there's also some change so in continuity you know there's a sort of a syncretic blend of Hindu and Islamic doctrines there's a belief in one God but also there's the cycle of reincarnation and death okay so they're bringing that over from Hinduism and Islam but then there's change um as well so like by by blending these two religions the resulting faith is entirely different from one another they reject some of the um uh doctrines of Islam they reject some of the doctrines of Hinduism uh and we've got a whole different Faith so that this what happens when faiths interact with one another sometimes new belief systems emerge and ladies and gentlemen that is all you need to know about units 1 through three um again it's not everything you need to know about units 1 through three I keep saying that and then I have to keep qualifying it I'm I'm hitting the big Ideas here if you need all the more granular ideas everything you need to know is is in my himler review guide and you know or you watch all the videos or do
