hi folks this is colleen paulette i'm one of the contributing authors to the ufly foundation's manual this video is a tutorial of how to use the ufi foundation's lesson slide decks we'll address four questions in this tutorial what are the e fly foundation's lesson slide decks how do i access them what does a typical deck look like how do i use these during instruction to address the first question the lesson slide decks were designed to accompany the ufly foundation's program now the u5 foundation's program is an explicit and systematic phonics program that's been packaged into a manual that's available for purchase the manual includes essential background knowledge implementation guidance instructional materials and other resources in the instructional materials section you'll find lesson plans for every concept on our scope and sequence the lesson plans like you see here are only available inside of the manual the lesson slide decks were created as visual supports to use during instruction with students there's one lesson slide deck for every lesson plan in the manual how do i access these slide decks the slide decks are all available for free on the ufly website in our ufly foundation's toolbox the main ufly website is ufliteracy.org the longer url you see on the screen here takes you directly to the foundations toolbox you can pause the video here to take a screenshot or you can grab your smartphone and scan the qr code on the screen once you're on the website this is what the toolbox looks like the powerpoint slides are all in the lesson resources section if you scroll down you'll see that the resources are divided by unit so each of these icons here you click on to take you to that chunk of lesson resources for this tutorial we're going to be using lesson number 45 so we'll click on the digraphs unit that will bring you to the unit resources page the slide decks are the third column in the resource table every lesson has both a powerpoint and google slide version and you simply click on the link you want to access it the powerpoint files will download directly to your computer and the google slide file will save a copy in your google drive what does a typical slide deck look like for this tutorial we'll be using the powerpoint version of the slides when you download and open the powerpoint the title slide will always have the lesson number and the concept so here you'll see if this is lesson 45 and it is the sh digraph the second slide in the deck has the suggested schedule for the two day lesson remember each lesson is broken up over two days but all these slides for both day one and day two are in the same slide deck and they're separated by a day one and day two title slide the third slide is a symbol key you'll notice as we go through there are symbols in the bottom right corner of each slide to remind you how you should be sharing the slide with your students and we'll go through that in more detail as we go through each step then you've got the day one title slide so this is where you start all of the day one lesson content it starts with a day one schedule so on day one you'll be completing five lesson steps and each time you complete a lesson step the schedule will appear again with a check mark for the step that was just completed all the visuals for each step in day one are shown here and you'll see that there are there is that visual schedule in between each step with check marks as you go in the next section of the video we'll talk through these slides in more detail at the end of day one you'll see that all of these steps have been checked off and then the last slide for day one is the we did it slide which is where you can insert a reinforcement activity or transition to the next part of the reading block and you can customize this slide with whatever visuals um you use for your class next you get to the day two section of the lessons um which are noted with the day two title slide and the day two visual schedule so on day two you'll have four steps of the lesson to complete and just like in day one you'll have a check mark the schedule again with a checkmark um to note the step that was just completed and you have all of the visuals that you need for all the steps on day two with your ending slide with all of your steps checked off and your we did it slide where you insert that reinforcement activity or transition to the next part of your reading block so that is what a typical lesson slide deck includes now to our final question how do i use these slide decks during instruction remember that the suggested schedule is to break each lesson apart over two days and the lesson slide decks include all of the visuals you need for both day one and day two of instruction we'll start with the slides for day one and we're still going to be using the lesson 45 and the powerpoint version of the slides now remember that the lesson slide decks were made to be a visual support for the lesson plan but they're not a replacement for the lesson plan so when you're ready to teach a lesson you're going to want to have the slides projected for your students to see you're also going to want to have your manual out with the lesson plan ready for you to reference throughout the instructional time the lesson number on the slide deck will always match the lesson header on your lesson plan so for day one we have our day one title slide and our day one visual schedule the first step on day one is phonemic awareness and this is the title slide for phonemic awareness notice that there is the red square icon in the bottom right hand corner of the screen and that's to remind you that there are no extra slides needed for this step if you look at the slide in editing mode and you'll see the notes at the bottom of each slide the notes are to prompt you where in the lesson plan to look for each step so for phonemic awareness it says see foundations lesson plan step one for phonemic awareness activity so i'm gonna go to my lesson plan and i'm gonna find step one and that's gonna give me the um instructional guidance that i need for this step and so in this case these are the words that i'm going to be blending and segmenting for this step and these words are only in the lesson plan they're not in the slide deck once i finish that step i see my visual schedule again with a check mark for phonemic awareness and then i move on to my visual drill so this is the title slide for the visual drill again if you look at the title slide in editing mode you'll see the prompt for where to look in the lesson plan for this step so for visual drill you're going to look at the lesson plan step 2 for students phoneme responses the slides for the visual drills display one grapheme at a time on the lesson plan you'll see the list of graphemes along with the phoneme that students are expected to produce for each one in the bottom right corner you'll notice the projector icon which is reminding you to display this section of side slides in slideshow mode so that you can just click through them quickly there's one slide for each grapheme listed in the lesson plan and once you click through all of the graphemes you'll come back to your visual schedule and get your check mark for the visual drill next you'll move to the title slide for the auditory drill just like the phonemic awareness step you'll notice that red square icon at the bottom right which means that there are no visuals needed for this step of the lesson if you look at the note on this slide it will prompt you to go to step three on the lesson plan for the auditory drill activity you'll then go to a blank slide while you complete the auditory drill remember that in the auditory drill you as the teacher are producing a phoneme and then your students are repeating that phoneme and recalling the graphemes they know that are associated with that phoneme once that step is done you'll go back to that visual schedule and get your check mark for auditory drill next is the blending drill title slide the note section of this title slide prompts you to look at lesson plan step 4 for the blending drill word chain and grid the icon at the bottom right reminds you that for this step you'll need to leave the powerpoint and open the blending board app which is available on the ufly website as a reminder our website is ufliteracy.org and the longer url you see here is the link directly to the foundations toolbox where you'll find the blending drill app once you're in the toolbox you're going to click on the ufly apps link and that will take you to our app page the blending board will be the first app you see and there is a link here to launch the blending board and there's also a link to a separate blending board tutorial we recommend that you open the blending board and get it ready before you begin the lesson so that when you get to this step you can simply minimize your powerpoint screen and then open the blending board in your browser and have it be ready to go for the lesson after you complete the blending drill you'll come back into the powerpoint and you'll find your schedule with the blending drill checked off next you'll see the new concept title slide the notes section on this slide prompts you to look at step 5 on the lesson plan for the recommended teacher language and activities to introduce the new concept now the new concept is the bulk of your instructional time on day one it includes an introduction typically also includes an articulatory gesture sound wall letter formation and then practice reading and spelling words that include that new concept the introduction portion of this um has the suggested teacher language along with visuals that will accompany that language so for this example i'll go through the visuals provided in the powerpoint and show you how they align with the suggested teacher language you'll notice that projector icon at the bottom corner of the new concept slides and that's again reminding you that for this section you'll show these slides in slideshow view this is important because there are animations embedded throughout the new concept step that you'll need to be in slideshow mode to be able to view so this is the first visual you'll see and the teacher language from the lesson plan is provided here so it would go something like this a consonant digraph is when two consonants come together to make one sound you have already learned about a consonant digraph we've talked about c k when c and k are together at the end of a word they make one sound the two consonants s and h have their own sounds and but when these consonants come together in words they make one new sound sh like at the beginning of the word sheep the consonant digraph sh can come at the beginning of a word such as the words ship and shop the consonant digraph sh can come at the end of a word such as the words fish and wish to make the sh sound put your teeth together and round your lips like this shh pull your tongue back toward the back of your mouth and be sure your voice is off because this is a quiet sound the sh sound is a continuous sound that can be stretched out watch me shh you try and then for the sound wall you would add the graphene card sh to the consonant grid under the sh picture card so that what i just modeled would have been the introduction articulatory gesture and sound wall portions of the new concept if the lesson plan includes letter formation you'll see a slide that looks like this let's write together as a prompt to practice letter formation next you'll see the reading and spelling portion of the new concept we always start with a watch me read slide which corresponds with the i do section of the uh word reading in the in the lesson plan the words will come up one at a time typically there's only one in some lessons there's more than one and this is where you as the teacher would model how to read this word for your students next the let's read together slide shows the we do words so these words will pop up one at a time and this is an opportunity for you to have your students practice reading these words together with your assistants as needed um so they'll pop up one at a time like this shop shut shell shock fish dish flash crash and shelf next you'll get to the watch me spell slide which is corresponding to the i do in the spelling section so this is where you would model you as the teacher would model spelling and for this lesson you would model how to spell the word ship nothing comes up on this slide so you would actually physically write the word either on an interactive whiteboard or on the board in front of your students and the same thing here this let's spell together this is prompting the we do spelling practice so this is where you would guide your students and practice spelling the words that are included on the lesson plan and that concludes the new concept step for day one and the new concept is the last step so now that you've gotten to your schedule with all of your check marks you are done with that day and you get to that we did it slide that is the signal that the lesson is over for the day we'll continue answering this last question how do i use these slide decks during instruction for the slides for day two you'll find the day two title slide about halfway through the slide deck and that's where the day two content begins like day one day two also starts with and maintains a visual schedule on day two you have four steps that you'll be completing these steps include a review of the new concept word work a regular word practice and connected text on day two the bulk of your instructional time will be devoted to the connected text step to begin we have this new concept review title slide and the note section here will again prompt you to go to step five in the lesson plan for the recommended teacher language and activities to introduce that new concept now in day one you would have spent about 15 minutes introducing the new concept on day two the new concept review is shortened to only about three minutes so all of the visuals from the day one slides are copied here for you but you're gonna go through them at a much quicker pace and just highlight the key points to jog your students memory about the new concept that they learned on the previous day the main difference here is that instead of the reading and spelling practice that you did on day one you'll just have a slide that looks like this this let's read together that will have about four to six words that you just read through very quickly with your students for that practice so on the sh lesson that looks like this you've got shop shut wish and fresh and for these condensed word lists we tried to highlight high frequency words as much as possible to give students that extra practice there when you finish that new concept review you'll get that check mark on your visual schedule and then you'll move on to your word work step you'll see the word work title slide and then in the notes on that title slide you'll be prompted to look at step six on the lesson plan for your word work activity just like the blending drill you'll notice the circular icon here that prompts you to leave the powerpoint and use a different resource for word work you can either use physical magnetic letters or dry erase board for this step or you can use the word work mat apps on the uf literacy website if you want to use the apps again those are found in our foundations toolbox that is linked here when you get to the toolbox you'll go to the ufly apps section just like you did for the blending drill app and then you'll scroll down until you find the virtual word work map section and then here you'll find both the beginner matte and the intermediate matte that you can launch again just like the blending drill we recommend that if you're going to use the app you launch it before you start the lesson so that when you get to this step you can just minimize your powerpoint screen and then open your browser and have the app ready to go for you once word work is done you'll get your check mark on that visual schedule and then you'll move on to your irregular words step the irregular words title slide is here and the notes section prompts you to look at step 7 on your lesson plan for your irregular words in this step there will typically always be words for you to review and to teach and you'll see those noted in their respective sections the icon here is reminding you that you can display these slides in editing view um so that you have the option to manipulate the visuals in real time and i'll show you what that looks like next you'll begin with your review words which you can see listed on your lesson plan and now i'll change into editing view so that you can see what their review slides look like from this perspective they're all listed in order on the slide deck here and when you click on each slide you'll see the word with the heart and square diagram and then in the notes section you'll see if you scroll that up you'll be able to read which lessons the irregular word is um included in and then you'll see an explanation of what makes the word irregular you'll also see this note that says the white rectangle under the word may be used in editing mode cover the heart and square icons then reveal them one at a time during instruction so that's referring to this box right here so it what you can do is just click and hold and you can cover these icons up and then reveal them one at a time just like this just for that extra visual isolation if you need that if you don't need that you can just leave the box at the bottom of the screen um and you don't need to use it like that um so every single word in this section will have the explanation of what makes it irregular and the lessons that it's included in we did our best to include variations for dialect um and regional accents um as applicable but if any of the words in the series if any of the explanations conflict with the way you and your students pronounce these words uh refer back to the way that you and your students pronounce them for ease of instruction so for the review words you're going to want to read as many words as you can um and then spell a handful and you'll want to just use your judgment based on students prior experience with these words to decide which ones to read and spell and how much time to spend on that review so this handwriting paper here is here for you to spell those review words now when you get to the teach section um you'll know that it's the teach section because you'll see this orange star in the top right corner of the page and you'll have your new words so for your new words these are words that your students have never seen before so you're going to spend a little bit more time on them you're going to do that introduction on to the words and then you're going to do that reading and spelling practice so you have this um let's spell together slide here after the teach words to do that spelling practice with those new words then once you get to the end of that section you can go back into that presentation view just like this and you'll see that check mark for word work and then that will lead you into the connected text title slide for the last step of day two the notes on the connected text title slide will prompt you to look at step eight on your lesson plan for the connected text activities these activities include reading and spelling sentences and then reading decodable text we begin with reading sentences you'll see this let's read together slide and each sentence that was included on the lesson plan will pop up one at a time so again you'll see that icon on the bottom right of your screen to show these slides in presenter view so that you can use the animations to just click through the sentences one at a time so that would look like this your first sentence she goes to the shop at 10 and then it goes away on one click and then on the next click your next sentence appears are we in a rush to get to the bash click for the sentence to disappear and then click again for the third sentence to appear which says jill says she wants to have fish sticks so for all of these sentences your students are reading them quarterly with your assistance and guidance as needed then we get to the let's spell together slide with the handwriting paper and so this is your prompt to go through the guided spelling practice spelling the sentences that you see on the lesson plan no other visuals will pop up here so you'll just physically write the sentences along with your students finally we get to the decodable text section you'll notice the little circular icon at the bottom there which prompts you to reference our decodable text guide um the decodable text guide has uh text from a variety of outside sources that are a lot that we've aligned to our u5 foundation's lesson plans but we've also written our own decodable text to align with every single lesson so those are what we call our u-fly decodables and the u-fly decodables are embedded in the powerpoint so if you'd like to use the ufly version it's already loaded here for you and you would just click again to advance the slide and the passage is here for you so you've got the title at the top and then it's in paragraph form so this is an opportunity for your students to practice quarterly reading connected text and you just advance through the slides to go one section at a time until you get to the end of the story once you get to the end of that decodable passage you get to that schedule um day two with all of your check marks which means that you've finished all of your steps for day two and then you get to that we did it slide again um to denote that you are finished with day two's lesson activities this concludes the lesson slide deck tutorial thanks so much for watching for more tutorials and
