How I Write and Use Scripts for YouTube Videos

Initial Approach

  • No Teleprompter:

    • Personal choice not to use a teleprompter.
    • Comfortable recording without one.
    • Acknowledges it's fine to use one if preferred.
  • Full Script Writing:

    • Initially, wrote scripts for every video verbatim.
    • Scripts included natural spoken language (e.g., stop words, ums).
  • Memorization Method:

    • Had laptop with script in front.
    • Memorized a few sentences at a time, then reproduced for the camera.
    • Initially, sentences were reproduced exactly as written.
  • Issues Faced:

    • Pressure to avoid obvious jump cuts.
    • Conscious of body position (hands, head) to minimize visible cuts.

Current Approach

  • Simplified Script Writing:

    • Keywords for Spontaneity:

      • For less structured videos (e.g., rants), writes down keywords and topics.
      • Allows for more spontaneous content creation.
    • Detailed Scripts for Technical Topics:

      • Writes full scripts for specific or technical topics.
      • Helps with difficult or technical vocabulary.
  • Incorporating B-Roll:

    • Highlights parts of script for b-roll with yellow.
    • Memorizes small script parts up to a b-roll section.
    • Reduces pressure by allowing seamless integration of b-roll without visible cuts.
    • Allows complete segments without cuts until b-roll.

Benefits of Current Method

  • Reduces pressure during recording.
  • Scripts are not blank; highlighted sections offer peace of mind.
  • Balanced use of script and spontaneity based on video type.

Conclusion

  • Personal evolution of script usage over time.
  • Adapted techniques for efficiency and reduced stress.
  • Offers tips for others on how to handle scripting for videos.
