12 Ripoffs, Tourist Traps, Scams, and Mistakes on Oahu, Hawaii

in this video I'm going to give you 12 ripoffs tourist traps scams and mistakes on the island of aahu here in Hawaii next on [Music] J hey what's up JK shers welcome back to another video here in the aahu Hawaii Series today we are going to be doing 12 ripoffs tourist straps scams and mistakes that you should watch out for when you're visiting the entire island of aahu last year we gave you 12 ripoffs tourist traps and scams around Wy Ki which is just that one area the main tourist Hub of Oahu but this time around we're going to give you the entire Island so we're going to have a special guest today and he is a local here and he's going to give us four ripoffs tourist traps and scams so there are a lot of mainlanders I was a culprit of that last year when I went to Northshore for the first time one tourist trap that could happen is you thinking that if you go to Northshore you're going to see the famous gnarly pipeline waves year round well that's not true these waves are seasonal and it's really dependent on the tides and usually this happens in December so if you're trying to go to Northshore and see those Bodacious waves and people wiping out gnarly and crazy uh you're not going to see it year round like right now me and my parents we drove by Pipeline and the waves were just real chill and relaxing and I'm telling you it's still one of the most beautiful things you'll see the different colors of blue and aquinus that's going on around there but you're not going to see those waves and you're going to be disappointed different parts of the islands where the waves are crashing dependent on the type of year so make sure you're aware of that I don't want you to feel like you fell into a trap of going to Nord Shore not seeing those waves because it's not a trap norshore is beautiful you're going to want to eat there you're going to want to spend a day there but you're not going to see the waves you around for your next tip this is a ripoff that actually happened to me back in 2016 when I visited Oahu for the very first time so I was only here for one night and I was super excited and I thought everywhere you go you're going to get fresh Pokey but that is not the case I went to an ABC Store on Wy ke one of the many ABC Stores over there and I got frozen Pokey took it up to my room had it for lunch by dinner time I was in bed I felt like crap I was not feeling well if you come here to aahu weiki wherever on the island you are make sure you're reading fresh poke or quality Hawaiian poke authentic Hawaiian poke these places are the ones that you want to go to places like food Land are great and they will show you the more expensive is the fresh Pokey over on the Poke stands in Safeway or food land or times market and there's other spots in Wy key that you can check out don't get the Frozen and poke at a random place on Wy ke or somewhere on the island because you might end up like me with a really bad stomach ache and the next day I had to fly to Australia 16-hour flight and I was still recovering from that not good guys so on last year's tip video Felix and I did touch up on the parking fees on Wy key but this is not what I wanted to talk about in this tip video what I wanted to talk about is the parking spot themselves I've learned that the parking spots around Wy ke even Northshore even coalina they're very very thin and a lot of them can be difficult to get in and out of and I've also learned that a lot of people like to back their car into these spots if I become a pro at that that's exactly what I'm going to do I tried it a couple of times just know that the parking spots are a little Slim So when you're getting a rent a car don't get yourself an Excursion or an an expedition because that might actually be tough for you to park fullsize car like a Camry for me that I think that's big enough to park van is okay but just know that the design of these parking lots especially in W they were designed in the ' 50s and 60s so they're basically amazed and when you're turning Corners to go down ramps there's times you're going to Nick things and who knows what will happen maybe one of the rental car agencies will see that Ding and ding you for a little bit of a fine because you messed up the car your next rip off or even tourist trp it could be misconstrued as one of the two is the proximity of your hotel room in W keiki or your hotel itself to the beach just know that there are tons of hotels up and down the W Kei script but some hotels can be two blocks in some can be right closer to the Alaway Channel you're not beach front and there's really not very many hotels that have beachfront views uh you got the Royal Hawaiian Hilton Hawaiian Village and those hotels around that strip but those ones are super costly so if you're staying somewhere Inland just don't be surprised that you might have to walk a couple of blocks and it's only about a 5 to 8 minute walk to the beach in y Ki just make sure you do your due diligence and if you're staying off a kuio just know that you're probably not going to get a beach front view all right JK shers so for the next four tips I got to bring in a local right they got to have some amazing information so we're can I find one right here oh what's up dude how's it going how's it going Aloha I'm Sean K Pony my channel is the Hawaiian traveler and I have four tips to give you guys welcome to the channel brother thank you thank for having me first ever collab with this guy and I'm excited for him to do out four tips and you'll see him in another video as well so the next tip is a ripoff we talked about vehicle break-ins in part one but in part two I wanted to talk about the two main places where vehicle break-ins happen the most first one is tless Road where you look out through all of Honolulu you're at the very top of the hill and offers the best views but because you're on the top of the hill that's where your vehicle is the most vulnerable so please watch out for your vehicle being broken into and the second place is on the west side so when you go for a long hikes or beaches vehicle brakins happen a lot over there and the reason why vehicle breakings happen a lot in tantas and on the west side because you're an isolated area so please watch out for vehicle break-ins in those two areas and another tip is that when you guys first here I want you guys to go to Sam's Club Costco or Walmart and get these three items one get snorkeling gear I don't want you guys to rent out your snorkeling gear because the price of the rental and how much it costs is almost the same and I wouldn't want you guys to rent out snorkeling gear where someone's mouth was on it for a couple hours previously that sounds kind of disgusting to me and the second thing is please get your pineapples at Costco or Sam St or Walmart I'm all about supporting local but these vendors sell pineapples for 14 to $15 and that's a ripoff you can get them at Costco for $ 350 so please get your pineapples over there and the third thing is that please buy your water bottles and snacks and chips at those places because cuz if you're going to the ABC store and you're constantly buying snacks or Waters every day it adds up after a while so please save up load up when you go there I work at a hotel and I notice that's one of the first things gets do before they come to the hotel is that they all have their gear from S Club Costco or Walmart so check out those areas Sean man you are 150% right on the dot so we went to Costco the waters like you get a 40 pack of water for like 7 Bucks $6.99 that's true and then I got a $6.99 4 pack of Maui Brewing Beer and yeah at ABC Stores I paid $11.99 for two cut water Spirits the Maui chips are already $3 at ABC Stores but at Costco you get the super bag and it's $6.9 99 and I think it comes out to maybe around 75 cents per bag so yeah it all adds up after a while especially in Hawaii cuz it's kind of already expensive good call man if you're liking this video please subscribe to my channel Sean Kip Pony at Hawaiian traveler I cover food hikes and all things Wahoo and how about my boy J and subscribe to him he's almost at 100K so subscribe to him like this video and share with your family and friends and another tip is do not turn your back towards the ocean the Instagram pick isn't worth it the water is highly unpredictable and I see tourists they take their picture the water splashes then they get sucked out to see understand that mother nature is stronger than you it's stronger than me and if something happens to you in the ocean or to your loved ones you can't take the ocean to court so please don't underestimate the ocean if you do go out make sure that you're a strong swimmer and make sure to go with someone who's a strong swimmer if you're not a strong swimmer yourself and just like part one I agree with Felix if you if you're going to get your souvenirs please get them at the L Stadium swap meet but if you're looking for high-end Brands I wouldn't recommend you shopping at wiy ke because it costs a lot my favorite Choice Premium Outlets they have high-end brands for a good price and that's where I do majority of my shopping for Tommy Bahama Sketchers and they have name brands for the girls who want their bags and presses so go check that out instead and another tip is that most Excursion on aahu you could do on your own it's a small island it's familyfriendly and when I see a lot of these tour buses dropping off people at these sections they're all free or come at a minimal cost so please just go out on your own enjoy the time there you don't have to be rushed I also see that there's actually tours for easy hikes like diamond head and monola Falls I'm like why don't you just go there and Hike yourself there's a lot of people over there there's a small parking fee but uh you don't need anyone to guide you on those hikes and if you do go on a hard hike and you're worried about possibly getting lost go on the weekend during the daytime and you see a lot of people going to the same area as you stay away from most excursions but if you do go on an Excursion get it directly from the website itself I would recommend getting a guide only for the Iolani Palace or PE Harbor so you can get an expert telling you about the rich history there I actually almost booked a Hawaii 50 tour and it was about $199 to have lunch at McGarrett's house and you'd have lunch with an actor from the show one of the cousins that's still a lot you could do that on your own you won't have lunch with the cousin but unless you're a really big fan of Hawaii 5 do it on your own this next tour strap is going to be the most debated down in the comment section below make sure you're commenting down below tell me your thoughts about luow on Oahu now a lot of locals and people that live on the island will be like yo we're never going to go on a Lu and they live here they they live the lifestyle here but for people that are not living on Oahu and are coming to Hawaii for the first time they want to have that experience you want to have that fun vacation feel and I'll tell you what I love luow I am a tourist I'm no local Sean's a local I'm a tourist and I did have a great time and I think you just need to find the right luau the one that spreads the right type of History the right type of sto storytelling and the right type of drinks and food and for me I really did enjoy the Paradise Cove luau over at coalina they had a really nice show fire dancing hoola they had the Kua Pig coming out from the ground and they really had a great MC telling you stories about the Polynesian culture and the Hawaiian culture so I would definitely recommend going to luow I am on the positive side about attending luow just go to the right one because there are some on Wy ke you go there and it's just very very gimmicky if you're coming to Hawaii for the first time you just want to have that vacation Vibe and that feel make sure you go to luau and if you're a big Disney fan I recommend going to the luau at anani you see Mickey Minnie and Moana there I'm a big Disney head I'm going to have to try out the Alani Lua one of these days everything they do is amazing there at their Lua their food their performers and I already did mention that Mickey Minnie and Moana is there right I go check that out cool I'm going there right now dude all right your next tourist trap is something that happens over at Alamo Moana Shopping Center now that is one of the biggest if not the biggest outdoor shopping center in the state of Hawaii but maybe even around the globe I think it's a huge shopping center you can get lost easily over there and they do have an information booth right by the Alamo Moana center stage and I noticed this it says information right and you're like okay I'm going to go here to find out where theara is or unlo Macy's well honestly that information booth is actually fake news it is a time share Booth dressed up as an information booth so when you go there they're going to be selling you on Hilton time shares over across the street at Hilton Hawaiian Village and you know if you guys are ballers and you do want to get into a time share then I suggest checking out the time shares but for your regular Joe Schmo like me or a regular tourist that's coming over here they're going to try to get you to buy those time shares and just be careful and know that the information booth is really a time share Booth they do that in Vegas as well make sure you're aware of that over at Alamo Moana Shopping Center this Overlook reminds me of something from lost or Jurassic Park it's government property no trespassing all right guys we're always got to talk about the ATM fees now I've talked about it in past tip videos in Las Vegas but here in aahu just know there is only one Mainland bank that has an ATM and it's at Colina at Disney's Alani and that's the Chase Bank ATM now you're not going to find your Wills far goes your Bank of America's you're going to find a lot of Hawaiian banks around here and you're going to get charged ATM fees unless your bank is a partner with that Hawaiian Bank so make sure you know that you're going to get charged ATM fees and maybe just take out all the cash you need to take out for spending money because you're going to need it for places like the Salat meat or for tips and stuff like that make sure you have cash with you when you come from the mainland into Hawaii or if you have Chase go to Alani get your cash out there or just suck it up and pay the ATM fee all right Jers I hope those 12 tips will help you for ripoffs tourist stps scams and mistakes and special thanks to Shan the Hawaiian traveler thanks for having me J and make sure you subscribe to his channel he's got really great content here on the islands but also around the world so make sure you watch him
