hello students David in student administration and registration Services Manager for I am here in this short video I'm going to show some techniques for getting started in the creation of a posters so a poster just means an electronic poster and there are these some great software out there for making electronic posters and it varies in complexity and cost the software that I'm about to show you is free of charge or there's a free version there's a premium version as well but you don't need that to do what you're likely to know how to do for this course okay so let's get started I'm going to share my screen and I will open a web browser here's a web browser okay so if you do a Google search or similar for Pico chat pik OCH AR t you'll find this this great let's see if I can see if I can find the right search results see creating for graphics etc so go to the Pico chart website Pico chat calm and tells you about how free and easy to use it isn't all of that to get started you can click here start for free and it says you're already signed in in my case if it didn't say that what you could do is you could create an account by using here sign up so you're already signed it I'll log out to show you right sign out okay okay now the sign up page it lets you sign up you can either sign up with your Google account your Facebook account or you can create a login using your email address okay so those are all the options for signing up are you backup homepage here there we go so we're on here you click on sign up and you get a page here it says one step sign up this one this one or name email address and password password has complexity requirements and you'll get an email and you will need to verify your email address by clicking the link in that email usual routine for signing up for things okay once you've created your account you log in you'll see a page something like this okay now it'll have a dashboard it'll have templates and team templates or if you're working collaboratively with someone don't worry about that so a quick way to get started is with a template because that will give you some formatting and things too to begin with okay so under templates there are some categories of template this infographic template don't worry about presentation is probably not useful there is poster templates okay now because this is called Annie poster does not necessarily mean that you need to use a poster template most of the posters that they are showing here in these templates a lot of them are advertising poster type posters some of them are appropriate if you have a look at this this is probably a useful template here because it has lots of ways of displaying information in it that's a useful thing okay but some of them that are very simple they're probably not going to be useful you don't want to make like a happy happy holidays' poster like this or very happy holiday poster now you want something that's more complex that you can display texts and images in alright so choose your template carefully that's a great one that's a great one that's very appropriate as is that and that they have many areas for displaying texts in graphics but the infographic templates are probably even more useful because they have specifically designed around the idea that you will display complex data and things like that there 20 infographics are usually used for okay some of them are around a particular kind of hierarchy or relationship and some of them are not some of them are more flexible in terms of what you can do okay so think about what kinds of things you want to include in your poster before you choose template that's a good thing to do because if you find that your template is is very restrictive or it doesn't have very many different spaces and you want to put a lot of things in you're going to be doing a lot of extra work that's all all right so I'm going to choose this template here call it the yeah here use template I've got to sign in at the moment with my gmail account I've already I've already got a assigning so that was quick okay okay so I can customize this very easily anything that's text I should be able to double click in it like this and it it so it might be that I'm doing this I posted something about Nursing and you can give your sections their own little titles you can you can type whatever text all right if you text doesn't fit of course then you can either change the font or you can change the size of the of the space like this so say that and and you know you if you have a good sense of aesthetics then your formatting will be able to come pretty naturally but if you don't then you need to think about design principles okay and you can you can read up on those as well things that are a complex graphic like this you might choose to use directly so you might just enter these values and give descriptions and things like that all you might say oh that's too too specific for its purpose I can't use that I want to create my own alright and what are some ways you can create your own Oh one easy way is you can make it in Microsoft Word and then you can make it into an image and upload it I'll show you how to make and how to insert an image first alright these sorts of things can be great because they can you can actually change the values in them with your own data which you can either import from a spreadsheet or you can type your values in the cells here and it will change so for example your headings might not be apples and oranges but it could be a comparison of anything right so this is the the gray women versus the blue or women all right so you could you could put a seven there and it'll updation now you've got seven you see so it's very easy to easily change and customize these things you've got three of these these kind of washed out looking once maybe you only want to have two of them some change that to or two I think I say 32 by mistake whatever 32 okay as soon as you click outside the cell it updates outside the cell but it updates okay so that's great you can customize things like that if it's already got them in so if you pick a template that has something like that in you can customize it a great deal all right and you can put in your own descriptions of what you're comparing if you're comparing a number of something versus a number of something else it might be for example number of male nurses versus female nurses and then maybe the the gray ones I don't know student ones or something like that it's up to you how you use these things and how you display data but displaying and communicating data ideas and can be synthesizing them into different forms of communication is one of the abilities that at a QF level a students are expected to graduate with so you are learning something that's extremely valuable both as an employability skill and as a standard that is set by in the Australian qualifications frankly it's very important huh you can add in your own bits okay so if I want to lay the line I can go to lines and I can choose that so I just clicked it and I said okay here's a line I'd like to put my line here move it around I can resize it like that if I want it to be the other way I can use this little squishy arrow here thing and I can turn it around okay you're very free to move things around in all sorts of ways you can add photos when you're adding photos there are two ways you can add photos this little drop-down gives you the two ways aptly SH just lets you browse through a collection of free photos for the free figures you use and Peko charts own internal photos also has a collection like that but it has this little plus icon here and that lets you add your own so if you want to upload and use your own photo you just click this little plus and you could for example insert this this photo of a langur monkey and and it would upload here now you have a limit of 40 megabytes with the free version so you can't you can't just you can't just upload an infinite number of photos that one said that the photo image file size was too big what we don't want to do if I wanted to change the size of a photo well I'll show you how to do that as well very briefly okay so I'll find a random photo so was this this photo here right so firstly before you resize your photo you're probably wanting to make a copy of it because if you resize your original then you'll find that you can't make it big again okay so I've just copied that and I pasted it again and now it's got another copy that it's got the word copy at the end of the file name then I right-click and I click Edit this will open it in page and I can click resize you can either call it a percentage or you can call the number of pixels okay if you find that the file size was twice as big as the allowable size and you have the number of pixels to 60 and see this maintain aspect ratio is tipped that means that the size vertical relative to the size horizontal is going to remain the same so that's made it smaller okay now smaller doesn't mean that you won't be able to make it look big it just means that it has it's going to pixelate if it goes over a certain size alright let's see whether it lets us drag and drop ah does there we go see that it just uploaded it got added to the gallery there and anything that's added to the gallery there you can then place in your poster there we are and you can move around other things and make room for it whatever you like okay now all of these things usually they consist of a number of parts okay I'm moving them around one at a time which is probably a bit inefficient if I wanted to I could actually hold the shift key and I could select all the parts together you say I'm holding the shift key on the keyboard and selecting them and then when I move them they all move together all right they'll get I'll move this image up here perhaps okay and you have you have some cut and copy options as well if you right-click on something see so you can actually copy and you can taste control V on the keyboard works for paste as well Jackie it does another software even though this is online great okay so this is how you can delete that one this is how you can create your e posture you can add in apart from photos some other things in the graphics section that you can add you can add in which which outlines you can add shapes so if you wanted a so there are colored ones no monochrome ones only and then there are categories so for example you could find the food and drink shapes if you wanted to put in a shape of a pineapple I don't know why you would all right it's probably a little off-topic pineapple you could you could find a shape of something perhaps that was relevant maybe in the medical section you will find something useful sorry so for example of an injured foot okay that might be the sort of shape that you might want to add to represent something to communicate somehow okay all of those things you can move around you can resize you could have a little foot a Bigfoot Bigfoot I think that was a name for a Yeti or something wasn't it alright there we go so the shapes and icons the photos a photo frame what is the photo frame well it's a shape that you can add a photo into so for example if you wanted if you wanted your photo to appear inside a triangular thing and be a bit funny-looking right you can you can do that okay we're done then do that and then if you want to you can you can change what the photo is and various things in it okay so we photo frame I haven't used very much on that sure of the features very much okay this is enough to get you started it's got a safe button you can you can regularly save and it saves on the cloud it has a download button okay so you can download it as a PNG that's a portable Network graphic that's what PNG stands for that's the free type of file that you can download nothing wrong with that at all and it can be in normal or medium quality when you download are you going for medium okay now it's downloading it'll take a while because each of these things that you create these graphics and things the file size is going to end up quite big okay will probably take a long time and here it comes okay so now if there is an image file if you click show in folder you'll be able to see it there you can open it in edit like this and if you wanted to you could use these tools you could you could draw on a paint on it etc okay this is free software that comes with Windows you can preview it by clicking that preview okay you can zoom in to see how close she can get you can zoom out see it Broadview alright that is how you do it and once you've downloaded you can still go images in here more download another copy if you want to the other thing that you can do is this the share feature the share feature will okay please make sure that your visual is named correctly before publishing okay do you want to continue okay I'm going to do it because apparently you can't change that after it is it's up to you if you want to make the link public if you make the link public that means anybody can see it okay so then you can copy that you can share it on social media if you want to send it to your friend on Facebook that's up to you and this link that is something that you can then send to your lecturer okay making it public is is not going to be publishing it for Google searches and things like that it says anyone with this link will be able to view it so if you haven't sent this link to someone they're not going to randomly find this on the Internet so don't be afraid to to share it as a link and say yes make public it's okay if you did post that link on a website then people would be able to click it and see it or if you posted the link on your social media okay you can change background colors and patterns and things if you wanted the background to be all kind of starry like this that'd be okay you could do that I'll show how you apply it maybe you drag it and drop it or something oh that's how you do it okay I didn't do anything for that but when I did some of the others I did okay so you can change backgrounds you can delete parts of what's already there if you want to be really flexible about how you do this you can you can just instead of using a template you can make a blank one okay so you can you can do all that editing on it but it won't give you all of those parts to start with okay and the other thing that you'll probably want to do with this you'll probably want to resize it so to resize it you go to settings and here it's got width and height currently it's in pixels you can change that to centimeters and if you wanted to for example double that you could currently those dimensions were for a for size approximately I think but if you wanted to double the size you could do that it doesn't really matter because in something that people can zoom in and out they can print it in different sizes anyway but you might say I'm going to design it to be printed on a3 and that would be a good thing so you would go and you'd look up the dimensions okay a3 paper size is 11 by 17 inches see it's coming up in my search so I go back to here I'm resizing this I got a custom I go to inches and I say that it's I sorry 11 by 17 isn't it 11 by 17 11 by 17 all right and if you have this resized content ticked it'll anything you've already put in there it will try to adjust the size I don't know how well that's going to go let me try it here with this one that already has content 11 17 I don't know how this is okay yeah it actually adjusted very well I think the only thing that would probably have difficulty adjusting would be maybe if you had a photo show or that kind of thing but even that even the photo show in this case it's adjusted for me all right remember hold the shift key if you want to select more than one part so I did the text in the box set there we go okay so if you have any questions please send me questions in Microsoft teams and you can also email me with much going to be the most important consideration but how you how you effectively communicate that that content is also very important okay so I hope you enjoyed this video and that's it for now
