thank you if you ask anyone what the best two things to come out of the Eastern United States in the early 2000s are I guarantee you their answers would be My Chemical Romance and me that isn't a joke go ask anyone I Love My Chemical Romance like a lot with such a unique method of Storytelling beautiful compositions and some of the coolest Rock videos you will ever see MCR have become a pop culture staple it's gotten to the point that this will have an effect on any MCR fan sorry about that I appreciate every member of the band and everything that they do I mean I want to grow up to be just like Gerard Way like so so bad and with how much of a fan I Am Naturally I am part of the My Chemical Romance subreddit thousands of fans from all over the world are also part of this group and they're posting Around the Clock all day every day one of the posts that really caught my eye won chili Valentine's Day it was two weeks ago was this one by a user Minecraft God 69420 love the name this my chemical romance iceberg is one of a few that I've seen but this one really stuck out to me so I figured it would be fun to dive into each entry and explain them for anyone who is not aware of the iceberg Trend the higher up on the iceberg in entry is the more well-known you know the saying the tip of the iceberg that's essentially what this is but the lower you go the more obscure the information tends to become I'll be explaining each entry using only the wealth of my finite knowledge of the band so if there's something here I get wrong or I miss please just let me know these Iceberg videos are all learning experiences and we're just here to have a good time and get a little smarter one more thing even with as chill as I want this video to be I will be diving into some heavier societal topics I'll be giving a heads up before I discuss them so anyone who isn't comfortable can skip them with all that being said here is an in-depth exploration of the My Chemical Romance iceberg [Music] foreign [Music] album story lines My Chemical Romance loves their concept albums with the black parade probably being the prime example of all of them something many don't know is that each album follows a particular storyline of its own not every album makes its Concepts as clear as the Black Parade so it's easy to see how they can go over a passing listener's head their debut album I brought you my bullets you brought me your love follows a pair of demolition loving admirers as they do crime and end up doing time probably in hell because spoiler alert they die at the end three cheers for Sweet Revenge would continue this story seeing one of the lovers ending up in purgatory making a deal with the devil to take the souls of a thousand evil men in order to save his love from an eternity in hell then there's the Crown Jewel The Black Parade a rock opera that follows the story of a young man dying of cancer in a hospital Reminiscing on his life and whether or not his fight for continuing to live is even worth it finally we have Danger Days an action-packed Thrill Ride featuring The lives and deaths of the fabulous killjoys in a post-apocalyptic California in the distant year of 2019. oh how times have changed I highly recommend each of these albums so you can check out the stories for yourselves and see how they culminate I promise you they are all worth it [Music] true lives of fabulous killjoys we just talked about it but danger day is the true lives of the fabulous killjoys is mcr's fourth widely released record even though this is the subtitle of the album this entry is actually in reference to the tie-in six issue comic book miniseries that ran from June 12 2013 to January 1st 2014 serving as a sequel to the album's continuity the comics were published by Dark Horse and written by Gerard Way and Sean Simon fun fact Sean Simon was the keyboardist for penty prep Frankie arrows band that inevitably broke up to make way for MCR these Comics are really interesting and well written and the art style is super slick and cool so if you haven't had the chance to check them out please do they are super easy to find online life on the murder scene released in March of 2006 life on the murder scene is an album compiled of various live performances video diaries and music videos with it being released just before the Black Parade it only featured songs from the band's first two albums as well as a demo version of I never told you what I do for a living and two unreleased tracks bury me in black and the ever heartbreaking Desert Song the video diaries are kind of a behind the scenes look at mcr's history their lives on tour their love for comic books and storytelling and where the band would be going next in terms of their sound they can be found on YouTube and I'll be sure to link them in the description if you want to give them a watch it's easy peasy pumpkin peasy Conventional Weapons it's so hard for me to pick my favorite MCR album but I always find myself coming back to this one but Conventional Weapons isn't so much an album as it is a collection of five singles of two songs a piece released from October 30th 2012 to February 5th 2013. it often goes under the radar when people talk about MCR and I think it's super underrated it's streaming everywhere right now and it is exceptional [Music] foreign b-sides there are five B-side tracks that were cut from the official release of the Black Parade but were given their own separate release the same year these five tracks are my way home is through you kill all your friends and Heaven Help Us along with live versions of Welcome to the Black Parade and famous last words I might as well just say it here so I don't sound repetitive but everything on this Iceberg for the most part is worth looking into so if you're interested check out all of this stuff at the end of the video mcrx living with ghosts for the 10th anniversary of the Black Parade the band re-released the album in 2016 under the name mcrx living with ghosts it featured every track from the album's original release along with previously unreleased demos and live tracks including two different versions of House of wolves and songs we'd never even heard before like Emily all the Angels party at the end of the world a demo for what would later become Welcome to the Black Parade the five of us are dying and not that kind of girl one of my personal favorites this is also streaming everywhere so if you want to give it a listen when the video is over you know where to look [Music] 9 11. this is one of those heavier topics I was talking about at the beginning of the video I won't be showing any footage of the attacks themselves or even the aftermath but if you would still prefer to skip this entry go to the time stamp on screen to skip to the next one on September 11 2001 Gerard Way was on a train from Hoboken to the World Trade Center in New York City for a meeting with Cartoon Network when in a moment of horror he watched as the South Tower collapsed it's like being in a in a science fiction film you know or like a or some kind of like a disaster film it was exactly that kind of feeling you didn't believe it like it felt like you were an independent day or something like it made no sense your brain couldn't process it so when that first building went like it was like a it was like an A-bomb went off of like just this emotion and it was like it made you nauseous you know I was more upset for the people around me than for myself you know um I was just I think one of the first thoughts that went in my head when I went down and so what does this mean like what does this mean for the world like how's this going to change everything after seeing what unfolded Gerard wanted to do the second best thing behind saving the world making it a better place he wanted to make a human connection that spanned further than himself the attacks on the World Trade Center were a wake-up call for a lot of people including Gerard who went home wrote what would later become skylines and turn Styles and began reaching out to people to ask if they wanted to make a difference with him and start a band the rest fell into place perfectly for the band to become the cultural phenomenon that it remains today in all seriousness I know discussing the attacks can be difficult but it's important to acknowledge them as a part of History we still feel the effects of 9 11 on modern society but it's comforting to me at least that even one person looked at all the damage stepped forward and wanted to make a difference The Black Parade characters I mentioned earlier how the black parade is a concept album following a young man dying of cancer and his journey into the Afterlife this entry references the man himself and some of the characters he encounters on his journey the patient our main character along with fear regret and mother War representing the parts of his life the patient looks back on as he passes away [Music] Watchmen influence Alan Moore released personally my favorite graphic novel of all time Watchmen in September of 1986 and it seems Gerard Way feels the same Gerard says Watchman influenced his career and what he wanted to do with his life this remains pretty clear when you look at G today with his more inspired comic series Umbrella Academy turning into a hugely successful Netflix series and MCR having actually performed a cover of Bob Dylan's Desolation Row for the soundtrack of Zack Snyder's film adaptation of Watchmen it's clear the graphic novel has had a major effect on Gerard Way and the band as a whole [Music] solo projects after mcr's breakup in early 2013 and even before MCR existed each member was off creating their own projects Mikey was largely silent outside of what he was doing with MCR but Frankie arrow created many other groups Frankie arrow and the patients Frank Iero and the celebration leather mouth and the aforementioned pensy prep to name a few Ray Toro recorded his own album Remember the laughter and Gerard went to conjure up one of my favorite records of all time hesitant alien an album his brother Mikey Way also had a hand in recording Gerard also continued his work in the comics industry finding a home in DC's young animal division known primarily for his work on Cave Carson has a cybernetic eye and Doom Patrol and of course he saw success with the umbrella Academy's Netflix adaptation in 2019. he even recorded some new songs for the series including covers of Hazy Shade of Winter and happy together both tracks actually featuring Ray Toro among several other new tracks [Music] Colleen Atwood designed the Black Parade costumes oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood known for her work on several Tim Burton projects also designed the marching band uniforms worn by the band in the music video for Welcome to the Black Parade and all of the promotional material it definitely makes sense seeing her track record and her designs remain synonymous with the band to this day my feelings on Tim Burton on the other hand are for another time violence against emos in Mexico another major trigger warning here abuse violence and homophobia are incoming if you wish to skip this entry as well go to the time stamp on screen right now [Music] in March 2008 a large group of emo kids were being harassed repeatedly near Tijuana Mexico they were threatened beaten and bullied on multiple occasions until finally reaching out to the police for protection many anti-emo Gatherings were formed in retaliation but the emo Community always stood their ground the police believed that the violence that broke out had to do simply with homophobic teens trying to keep the emo culture out of their City a month later My Chemical Romance while on the Black Parade tour played a show in Mexico City where they spoke to the crowd calling for an end to the violence Gerard on stage said I want to say something today before we continue recently we've been hearing a lot of stuff about some violence here in your country having to do with kids who want to wear black t-shirts or some kind of like that we don't want to see any violence we came here for one reason and that's to be at the rock show this coming from a band that didn't consider themselves emo in the first place mad gear and missile kid released the same day as Danger Days mad gear and missile kid is the first and only EP ever released by My Chemical Romance it features three tracks ftww standing for the whole wide world masters of ravencroft and black dragon fighting Society it isn't currently streaming on any major services but the tracks all exist online and I'll be sure to link them in the description this song is about sucking dick for cocaine before playing honey this mirror isn't big enough for the two of us at a live show Gerard had this to say [Applause] so if you ever wondered what this mirror isn't big enough is all about there you go [Music] inhaler signings as an asthmatic myself I I enjoyed this entry quite a bit this entry is in reference to the myth that Mikey is asthmatic due to his appearance in the I'm not okay I promise video he is not actually asthmatic but he has had a number of fans approach him asking him to autograph their inhalers even though he isn't actually asthmatic I love that Mikey is such a good sport and kept it up and I really wish that I had had him sign an inhaler of mine at some point in my life he seems like a really sweet dude respect Yo Gabba Gabba these entries are getting funnier and funnier MCR made an appearance on kids show Yo Gabba Gabba in the 2007 episode Christmas special performing an entirely new song every snowflake is different just like you [Music] I love this song it might as well be a demo for scarecrow [Music] [Music] Famous Last Words injuries okay this one's not quite as funny the sort of finale of The Black Parade has an insane music video so insane in fact that a few band members if not all of them sustain some kind of physical injury Frank jumped on Gerard during filming tearing a ligament in Gerard's ankle Frank Rey and Mikey all sprained their fingers and the band's former drummer Bob Breyer received second and third degree burns on his leg from the background pyrotechnics but he wanted to keep the shoot going before getting any kind of medical attention this would cause Bob to catch gangrene but he would later recover and stay with the band until 2010. we'll talk more about him later Matt palacier was the first member one of Gerard's close friends at the time of the band's formation was drummer Matt palacier after Gerard witnessed the attacks on September 11th one of the first people he reached out to when wanting to start a band was policier who didn't stay the advanced percussionist for very long as and correct me if I'm wrong here he was asked to leave after setting the band's first van that Gerard had gotten from his grandmother on fire he was technically the first member of MCR outside of Gerard foreign lessons curse going into the black parade era MCR removed their song drowning lessons the fourth track from their debut album from their live setlist this is believed to be because every time they perform the song technical difficulties and issues would always follow sadly I wouldn't expect to hear drowning lessons live anytime soon paper Kingdom following the release of Danger Days MCR immediately began work on their next album unsurprisingly this new record was also going to be a concept album focusing on a support group of parents who had all tragically lost their children Gerard's heart wasn't fully in the story or the album in general and from the three fully recorded songs the band had completed he claims his lack of passion in the project showed regardless anyone at the recording sessions came out saying it was some of the darkest music MCR had ever written ultimately this album wouldn't see the light of day but it is known that fake your death the single released alongside mcr's greatest hits album May death never stop you was originally planned to be featured on this scrapped album if you want more information on this discarded record Blockbuster garbage on YouTube has made a wonderful video explaining it which I will have Linked In the description Daily Mail protests in 2008 the UK news publisher Daily Mail released a statement that linked mcr's music to the Asus of a 13 year old girl calling the group azus occult band in response nearly 100 My Chemical Romance fans protested in the band's name with even more boycotting the publisher entirely [Applause] [Applause] Mama features the band's mothers the theatrical track Mama From the Black Parade not only features Liza Minnelli but also the mothers of Gerard and Mikey Way and Frank Iero themselves serving as backing vocals for the track nine volt heart another piece of scrapped MCR work nine volt heart is a song that the band wrote and even performed in their earlier days while the lyrics can be found floating around online recordings of the song are nowhere to be seen I'll link the lyrics for you to check out if that sort of thing interests you track 4 of XO one of Frankie Arrow's many solo projects leathermouth released their first and only album EXO in 2009. this entry is in reference to the record's fourth track I'm going to little the president of the United States nope I am not making that up the song caused a lot of trouble for Frank as the United States Secret Service visited him threatening him with five years in prison should his band ever play or re-release the song again only the members of My Chemical Romance [Music] Desolation Row is Canon to The Watchmen film this entry is more of a theory than anything else I talked about it earlier but MCR covered Bob Dylan's Desolation Row for the soundtrack of Zack Snyder's Watchman film and Snyder himself even directed the music video but the film being set in an alternate version of the 1980s Gerard says they wanted their cover to seem like an 80s New Wave rock song that the teens in that Universe would listen to and of course we actually see the famous Rorschach mask and the smiley face button of the comedian in the video so yeah if you ask me and lots of other fans the film and the music video are supposed to be connected The Black Parade written in a haunted house My Chemical Romance wanted their third album to set an eerie cinematic atmosphere and what better to create this spooky mood than by writing the album entirely within a haunted house the Paramore Mansion no relation in La is a supposedly haunted estate and now Taurus trap but MCR saw the Mansion as a perfect opportunity to find the chilling Vibe they wanted for their third album that would eventually become the Black Parade as excited as they all initially were their anticipation turned to fear as Mikey suffered some kind of emotional distress while inside the house that caused him to temporarily leave the band entirely in fact the opening monologue of the record's 10th track sleep is Gerard talking about the night terrors he suffered while staying in the manor [Music] [Applause] [Music] sometimes it's weird that the band doesn't talk about the black Parade's actual production very often until you consider the strange happenings they dealt with while staying inside the Paramore mansion again no relation that I know of honey this mirror isn't big enough for the two of us music video I genuinely have no words for this this music video is essentially a retelling of the Japanese film audition in which a middle-aged man uses an audition to find a new wife only for the perfect girl to not be so perfect I if you want to watch the video I'll link it in the description just a heads up it is a little weird thank you MCR is partly responsible for Twilight Stephanie Meyer author of The insanely popular book turned film series Twilight used My Chemical Romance as inspiration when writing her books she even wanted Gerard to play Edward when casting was underway for the films MCR was also asked to record an entirely new song for the movie but ended up turning it down on the right side if MCR wrote a song for Twilight we may have never gotten decode personally my favorite Paramore song the breakfast monkey one of Gerard's cartoons he planned on pitching to Cartoon Network was called The Breakfast monkeys seemingly a show in which the titular breakfast monkey gets into hijinks that really have very little to do with breakfast at all [Music] this individual is truly a gift from God I love you Gerard MCR vs Hannah Montana in November of 2006 the soundtrack for arguably the poster child of Disney Channel shows Hannah Montana stole the billboard number one debut from the Black Parade MCR almost stole the win but Disney's Star child Reigns Supreme that's really all there is to it we cannot escape the grasp of Hannah Montana Bob Breyer controversy I talked about Bob a little while ago and he's not exactly a great guy he's racially insensitive makes very inappropriate jokes harasses the band members on social media takes pictures of strangers without their consent the list goes on I'll link a blog post with screenshots of Bob's inappropriate tweets and the sort because it's just way too much to get into here and I want to keep this video as upbeat as possible after the second layer just know that this guy is an absolute scumbag and his being ejected from the band is definitely a good thing The Chemical Brothers I will be fully honest I'm not entirely sure what this entry is in reference to the only thing I could find regarding The Chemical Brothers is a mashup of My Chemical romances I don't love you and The Isley Brothers Between the Sheets by one board Jew mashup [Music] I [Music] don't love you [Music] it's admittedly pretty good I'll leave a link to the full video in the description [Music] Gerard and Mikey are Joe Rogan's second cousins here's a sentence I never thought I'd say but watch this snippet from Joe Rogan's podcast your grandmother yes named Josie yes Gerard Way yes lead singer of My Chemical Romance yes yeah we're related that's what he said I was like I'm going to Joe Rogan he goes I don't have 100 confirmation on this but I'm pretty sure Joe Rogan is my cousin yeah because my aunt Josie was his grandmother yeah I don't know him but we're cousins how great yep that's pretty much all there is to it Joe Rogan's grandmother is Gerard Way's aunt [Music] what a small random little world we live in Freddy versus Jason 2003's Freddy versus Jason is a slasher battle between Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees I think I've never seen it the film's soundtrack however featured a number of punk and metal bands like Seether Lamb of God and Slipknot with a lineup like that it's not necessarily a surprise that My Chemical Romance was asked to write a song for the movie as well unfortunately this is another piece of MCR lost media titled sister to sleep the track wasn't completed in time for the movie's release but that didn't stop the band from performing it live audio recordings of the song do exist online and even though we don't have the studio version it's cool that we still have some kind of glimpse into an MCR song that basically doesn't exist [Music] the pancake Report with Gerard Way this video is one of the few short boosts of Serotonin that helped me through High School for context pancake mountain is essentially a public access Rock dance party show that was hosted by a number of popular groups and artists at the time including but not limited to Gerard Way Katy Perry The White Stripes Eddie Vedder the B-52's Kings of Leon bright eyes and Billy Idol the show itself features obviously kid-friendly humor and seeing Gerard sit and make terrible pancake based puns is such a left turn and I love it so much in other news Woody Woodpecker cameo in dead I'm gonna play you two quick clips and by the end of these two clips you will understand what this means if you don't already fair warning once you hear this you can't unhear it first clip laughs second clip I'm sorry to end this video on such a painful note so here's more of the pancake report video what I'm saying is it's not Pancake Day for six months and there's flour energy syrup and there's batter and it's at it's Madness it's way too commercial Yeah Yeah well yeah let's toss it let's toss it to Maddie and just like that we have conquered the My Chemical Romance Iceberg first things first I want to say thank you guys so much for checking this video out and sitting through I don't know how long this video is however long this video is going to be's worth of time of just me telling bad jokes and you know that thank you means a lot this video was a ton of fun to make and research and I hope that you all liked watching it as much as I did making it it's cliche to say at this point but that is that's just how I feel so there we go funny story uh before I was even working on this Iceberg I was working on another totally separate iceberg that had nothing to do with this at all um but it's a lot of fun to do and as soon as I'm finished here I'm gonna get back onto that other one so if you are a Disney fan if you are a video game fan this next Iceberg should be pretty interesting and the only way that you're gonna get notified that it's out is if you subscribe so do that hit the Subscribe button hit the like button do all the things so you can stay up to date on anything that I put out because I love getting to do this and I hope that you want to see what's next all the things that I said throughout the video I will have Linked In the description will be linked in the description uh so as soon as we're done here you can go check all that out and you can also go follow all of my socials Instagram Twitter all of the social hosts will be in the description as well well you can see what my day-to-day life is like outside of this check out all of my regular has inspired you to want to check all that out or whatever but with all that being said I'm Evan thank you all so much for watching and sleep tight [Music] foreign [Music]
