Multifunction Device (MFD)

Overview

  • Abbreviated as MFD
  • Can perform multiple functions:
    • Printing
    • Scanning
    • Faxing
    • Network connectivity
    • Phone line connectivity
    • Printing from the web

Technical Perspective

  • Complex devices with many moving parts
  • Require maintenance
  • Larger enterprise devices: require proper installation location
    • Power

Driver Installation

  • Operating system-specific drivers are required (e.g., Windows 10)
  • Drivers must match OS version (32-bit or 64-bit)
  • Correct driver needed for specific functions (e.g., printing, faxing)

Printer Languages

  • PCL (Printer Command Language)
    • Created by Hewlett Packard
    • Common in laser printers
  • PostScript
    • Created by Adobe

    • Exists in many printers
