How to Write an Argumentative Essay

Structure of an Argumentative Essay

  • Most argumentative essays consist of five paragraphs:
    • Introduction
    • Three body paragraphs
    • Conclusion

Introduction

  • Hook: An attention-grabbing statement about the topic.
  • Background sentences: 2 to 3 sentences providing context about the topic.
  • Thesis statement (Claim):
    • Clearly states the writer's position.
    • Followed by reasons supporting the argument.

Body Paragraphs 1 and 2

  • Each of the first two paragraphs should:
    1. Begin with a transition word.
    2. State a reason supporting the thesis.
    3. Follow with credible evidence (examples, quotes, facts, statistics).
    4. Include in-text citations to credit the author:
      • Format: Author's last name + year of publication.
    5. Provide an example or explanation of what the evidence proves.

Body Paragraph 3

  • Counterargument and Rebuttal:
    • Present the counterargument (the opposing position) to add credibility.
    • Follow with a rebuttal to disprove the counterargument:
      • Should be supported with credible evidence and an explanation.

Conclusion

  • Final paragraph should:
    • Restate the thesis.
    • Summarize the supporting reasons.
    • End with a strong statement regarding the topic.
    • Do not introduce new reasons or evidence.

Reference List

  • A bibliography is included at the end:
    • References should be alphabetized by author name or article title.
    • Format:
      • First line left-aligned.
      • Following lines indented.
