Structure of an Argumentative Essay
Most argumentative essays consist of
five paragraphs
:
Introduction
Three body paragraphs
Conclusion
Introduction
Hook
: An attention-grabbing statement about the topic.
Background sentences
: 2 to 3 sentences providing context about the topic.
Thesis statement (Claim)
:
Clearly states the writer's position.
Followed by reasons supporting the argument.
Body Paragraphs 1 and 2
Each of the first two paragraphs should:
Begin with a
transition word
.
State a
reason
supporting the thesis.
Follow with
credible evidence
(examples, quotes, facts, statistics).
Include
in-text citations
to credit the author:
Format: Author's last name + year of publication.
Provide an
example or explanation
of what the evidence proves.
Body Paragraph 3
Counterargument and Rebuttal
:
Present the
counterargument
(the opposing position) to add credibility.
Follow with a
rebuttal
to disprove the counterargument:
Should be supported with credible evidence and an explanation.
Conclusion
Final paragraph
should:
Restate the
thesis

Summarize the
supporting reasons

End with a strong statement regarding the topic.
Do not introduce new reasons or evidence

Reference List
A bibliography is included at the end:
References should be
alphabetized
by author name or article title.
