[Music] in book 12 Odysseus resumes his narrative in the past he returns with his men to Circe's Island to give al Panora proper burial as promised their Circe explains that he'll encounter the sirens beautiful singers whose voices have led many sailors to their demise crashing off course on the wandering rocks he instructs his men to put wax in their ears to keep from hearing the song of the sirens however has prone to temptation as Odysseus is he decides that he wants to hear their song but he comes up with a plan he has his men bind him to the mast so he can't escape but he can listen and hear what the sirens are singing he survives and he overcomes the odds in this way Odysseus is next trial is getting past the monsters Scylla and Charybdis Scylla a multi-headed beast eats a number of his men but they're able to get by and land on the island of the Sun God Helios there Odysseus warns his men not to eat the cattle but eventually they grow hungry and tired and they do it while Odysseus is asleep furious just like Odysseus had been warned helios reaches out to zeus demanding punishment for the men a storm rushes odysseus a ship leaving only him a wife clinging to a board of a raft and landing on Calypso's island where he has been all this time a major theme invoked here is that of loyalty with Odysseus returning to Circe's Island to give Alban or the proper burial he was promised we also see Odysseus overcoming some of his urges to be tempted by listening to the sirens but having a plan to keep him from falling victim to their song one other important theme is that of sharing information and trust one that Odysseus really needs to do to keep his men safe did he err by not giving them enough information did he reach out to them as much as he could have to prevent them from being killed by Helios you
