[Music] welcome to math with mr j [Music] in this video i'm going to cover how to multiply and divide fractions we'll go through one example each and i'll explain each step as we work through the problems let's jump into our examples starting with number one where we have seven ninths times two-thirds now when we multiply fractions we multiply straight across so numerator times numerator the top numbers in our fractions and then denominator times denominator the bottom numbers in our fractions so let's start with the numerators 7 times 2 that gives us 14. our denominators 9 times 3 that gives us 27 so our answer is 14 27. always look to see if you can simplify but in the case of number one the greatest common factor between 14 and 27 is one that means we are in simplest form and done with the problem so final answer for number one 14 27 and again when we multiply fractions multiply straight across let's move on to number two where we have three eighths divided by one fourth now when we divide fractions we keep switch flip you may also hear keep change flip they both mean the same thing so i'm going to rewrite the problem using these steps so keep always keep your first fraction so 3 8 then our next step is switch we are going to switch from division to multiplication so let's switch this to multiplication multiplication is the opposite of division so our last step is flip we are going to flip our second fraction this is called the reciprocal so the 4 is going to be our numerator now and the 1 is going to be our denominator so we flipped that second fraction now we can multiply straight across 3 times 4 is 12. 8 times 1 is 8. we get 12 8 which is an improper fraction so we want to convert this to a mixed number we do that by doing 12 divided by 8 so how many whole groups of 8 can we pull out of 12 1 whole group of 8 that's our whole number now we don't hit 12 exactly we have a remainder of 4 that's our numerator and we keep our denominator of eight the same so we get one and four-eighths now that can be simplified we have a common factor other than one between four and eight so we can put this into simplest form our greatest common factor is four let's divide both of these by four and we get one four divided by four is one and eight divided by four is two so we get one and a half for our final answer so there you have it there's how you multiply and divide fractions i hope that helped thanks so much for watching until next time peace [Music]
