Lecture Notes: Post-Processing in Ansys Fluent

Overview

  • Results Tab: Used for post-processing SCFD simulation results.
    • Surface & Graphics Groups: For qualitative aspects.
    • Plots & Reports: For quantitative aspects.
  • Focus: Plots and reports in this lesson.
  • Learning Objectives: XY graphs, flux, force, surface integral, volume integral reports, generating detailed simulation reports.

Getting Started

  • Steps to Follow:
    1. Launch Ansys Fluent in solution mode.
    2. Load a simulated case.
    3. Navigate to the Results tab.

Plots Group

  • Function: Extract and plot numerical data from CFD simulation.
  • Features: XY plots, histograms, data combination, residual control.
  • Creating an XY Plot:
    1. Click XY Plot -> New.
    2. Configure in the Solution XY Plot dialog box.
    3. Use options to control node values, axis functions, file writing.
    4. Example Variable: Pressure (y-axis) vs. Direction Vector (x-axis).
    5. Create new surfaces if needed (e.g., line rake).
    6. Customize axes and curves if necessary.
    7. Save plot data.

Residuals Option

  • Same as in the Reports Group of the Solution tab.

Data Sources

  • Combine and plot data from multiple sources (XY plots, report plots, external data).

Reports Group

  • Reports Types:
    • Flux Reports: Computes mass flow rate, heat transfer, etc.
      • Example: Compute mass flow rate at Inlet and Outlet.
    • Force Reports: Computes forces, moments, center of pressure.
      • Example: Compute pressure and viscous forces on walls.
    • Surface Integrals: Computes various integrals over surfaces.
      • Example: Compute mass weighted average temperature at Outlet.
    • Volume Integrals: Similar to surface integrals but for cell zones.
      • Example: Compute volume average velocity in fluid zone.

Simulation Reports

  • Function: Generate customizable HTML/PDF reports.
  • Steps:
    1. Expand Simulation Reports in the outline view.
    2. Configure with Report Outline option.
    3. Generate and export report in desired format.

Summary

  • Quantitative post-processing with plots and reports in Ansys Fluent.
  • Main aspects covered: XY graphs, combining plot data, fluxes, forces, surface and volume integrals, simulation report generation.
