Overview
This lecture introduces the eight parts of speech in English, defining each and explaining their grammatical functions with examples.
The Eight Parts of Speech
- There are eight parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection.
- Parts of speech describe how words function in sentences for meaning and grammar.
- A single word can serve as different parts of speech depending on context.
Noun
- A noun names a person, place, thing, or idea (e.g., girl, house, happiness).
- Nouns can be common or proper; singular or plural; concrete or abstract.
- Nouns show possession by adding 's and serve roles like subject, object, or complement in a sentence.
Pronoun
- A pronoun replaces a noun, called its antecedent (e.g., she, we, it).
- Types of pronouns include personal, possessive, reflexive, relative, and demonstrative.
Verb
- A verb expresses action or a state of being (e.g., jump, is, write).
- Verbs have main and helping forms; they must agree in number with their subjects and change form for tense.
Adjective
- An adjective modifies or describes a noun or pronoun (e.g., pretty, long, blue).
- Adjectives answer questions like which one, what kind, or how many.
- Articles (a, an, the) are usually classified as adjectives.
Adverb
- An adverb modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb, but not a noun (e.g., quickly, very, then).
- Adverbs often end in -ly and answer when, where, how, or to what degree.
Preposition
- A preposition is placed before a noun or pronoun to create a phrase modifying another word (e.g., by, with, about).
- Prepositional phrases often act as adjectives or adverbs.
Conjunction
- A conjunction joins words, phrases, or clauses and shows their relationship (e.g., and, but, because).
- Types include coordinating (and, or, but) and subordinating (because, although).
Interjection
- An interjection expresses emotion and is often followed by an exclamation point (e.g., Oh!, Wow!, Oops!).
