Printmaking Techniques

Overview

Printmaking involves creating an image on one surface and transferring it to paper. There are three major types of printmaking, each based on different techniques of image creation and transfer:

  1. Relief Printmaking

    • Technique:
      • Carving away the whites of the image.
      • The image is left in relief (raised up).
      • Raised areas accept ink.
      • Ink is transferred to a piece of paper.
  2. Intaglio Process (Etching)

    • Technique:
      • Image area is removed from the surface.
      • Ink is placed in the recesses.
      • Ink in the recesses is transferred to the paper.
  3. Lithography

    • Technique:
      • Image and non-image areas are on the same surface.
      • Relies on chemical treatment and the principle that grease and water resist each other.

Printmaking and Reproduction

  • Printmaking processes allow for the reproduction of existing images.
  • Examples of everyday prints include money, newspapers, magazines, and posters.

Fine Art Printmaking

    • Video
