Understanding BasicMed for Pilots

Overview

  • BasicMed is an alternative to holding an FAA medical certificate for pilots.
  • Pilots must meet specific requirements, including completing a medical examination and an online medical course.
  • Legislation passed on July 15, 2016, and modified in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024.

Steps to Fly Under BasicMed

  1. General Requirements
    • Possess a U.S. driver's license.
    • Previously held an FAA medical certificate after July 14, 2006.
  2. Medical Examination
    • Complete section 2 of the Comprehensive Medical Examination Checklist (CMEC).
    • Undergo a physical exam by a state-licensed physician who completes section 3.
  3. Online Medical Course
    • Complete a BasicMed medical education course.
    • Courses available:
      • AOPA's BasicMed Medical Self-Assessment
      • Mayo Clinic BasicMed Online Training Course
  4. Documentation
    • Keep the signed CMEC and course completion certificate.

Aircraft and Operating Requirements

  • Aircraft:
    • Must be authorized for no more than 7 occupants.
    • Maximum takeoff weight of 12,500 pounds.
  • Operation:
    • Carry up to six passengers.
    • Fly under VFR or IFR within the U.S., below 18,000 feet MSL, and under 250 knots.
    • Cannot be operated for compensation or hire.

Eligibility to Fly Under BasicMed

  • Private pilots, flight instructors, and pilot examiners under BasicMed.

Medical Conditions Requiring Special Issuance

  • Mental Health Disorders:
    • Severe personality disorders, psychosis, bipolar disorder, or recent substance dependence.
  • Neurological Disorders:
    • Epilepsy, unexplained consciousness disturbances, or central nervous system function loss.
  • Cardiovascular Conditions:
    • Myocardial infarction, coronary heart disease treated, cardiac valve, or heart replacement.
