Overview

This lecture covers the key anatomical regional terms for identifying various parts of the human body, dividing them into axial and appendicular regions.

Major Body Regions

  • The body is divided into the axial region (head, neck, trunk) and the appendicular region (upper and lower limbs).
  • Axial region includes head, neck, and trunk areas; appendicular region includes limbs and their attachments.

Axial Region: Head and Neck

  • Cephalic region: entire head.
  • Cranial region: skull.
  • Frontal region: forehead.
  • Ocular region: eyes.
  • Otic region: ears.
  • Nasal region: nose.
  • Buccal region: cheeks.
  • Oral region: mouth.
  • Mental region: chin.
  • Occipital region: back/base of the skull.
  • Cervical region: neck.

Axial Region: Trunk

  • Thoracic region: chest area between neck and abdomen.
  • Axillary region: armpits.
  • Mammary region: breasts.
  • Sternal region: area over the sternum.
  • Abdominal region: abdomen; can be divided into quadrants or regions.
  • Umbilical region: navel or belly button.
  • Pelvic region: area between hip bones.
  • Inguinal region: groin, site of inguinal hernias.
  • Pubic region: external genitalia area.
  • Perineal region: area between genitals and anus.
  • Dorsal region: back.
  • Vertebral region: along the spine.
  • Lumbar region: lower back.
  • Sacral region: near the sacrum bone.
  • Gluteal region: buttocks.

Appendicular Region: Upper Limbs

  • Acromial region: shoulder.
  • Brachial region: upper arm.
  • Antecubital region: front of the elbow.
  • Olecranal region: back of the elbow.
  • Antebrachial region: forearm.
  • Carpal region: wrist.
  • Manual region: hand.
  • Metacarpal region: area beyond the wrist.
  • Palmar region: palm.
  • Pollex region: thumb.
  • Digital region: fingers.

Appendicular Region: Lower Limbs

  • Coxal region: hip.
  • Femoral region: thigh.
  • Patellar region: kneecap/front of knee.
  • Popliteal region: back of knee.
  • Crural region: front of the leg (shin).
  • Sural region: calf/back of the leg.
  • Pedal region: foot.
  • Calcaneal region: heel.
  • Tarsal region: ankle.
  • Metatarsal region: area beyond the ankle.
  • Hallux region: big toe.
  • Digital region: toes.
  • Plantar region: sole of the foot.
