Hi everyone! I'm back today and I want to talk to you just briefly about needles. I'm not sure how well you're going to be able to actually see the needle, but I'm going to show it to you today and then we'll look at it again in a few more days using an actual sewing machine, right?
And hopefully we can go back through this all when we're back in the shop. But some things to know. Needles. There are different sizes of needles and there are different types of needles and what kind of needle you need is based on what project you're working on, right? So we're going to look at a couple of different types.
This is the universal ballpoint needle. These are used for knit fabrics. Knit fabrics are things like your t-shirt, if you have like a fleece robe or something that's double knit, let's hope you don't have any double knit in your closet.
Jersey, those are knit fabrics. Things that are like spandex, that's a knit fabric. You want this type of needle for those types. All right, so a ball point needle, they usually have a yellow top to them, and then they come in different sizes.
So there's a size 11, size 14, and size 16 in this pack, and I'll talk to you about that in just a moment. Next up, the woven needles, right? So this particular pack here, these are the red needles, and they are for various weight of woven. Again, you'll notice there's different sizes. Size 9 is for very sheer fabric.
Size 11 is for lightweight or woven fabrics. Size 14 is normally what we keep on our machines that's a medium weight. Things like poplin or linen.
Size 16 is for your heavyweights like your denim, right? So why are these weights important? So the size 11, if I was sewing silk, If you've ever seen one of our dance shows, you see all this silk Like Palazzo pants that we made in the shop.
Those are going to be sewn with very lightweight needles Otherwise, it's going to pick the fibers of the silk. Now if I use the size 11 needle on Say denim, denim calls for the size 16 needle, right? So if I use the size 11 and I sew, it might let me sew a couple of stitches before it breaks my needle But it's gonna break due to the size of the needle. It's too small, too lightweight to go through that denim.
So your denims need a size 16. For most of the things in the shop, you're going to be able to use a size 14. It just depends on that fabric, right? For most of the things in the shop, we're working with woven fabric. Again, the two different types are needles that are for ballpoint, meaning that the end of the needle is kind of more like a ball.
than a very sharp. So these are a lot sharper and pointier than these are. And that's because if this goes through on these knits, a lot of times it'll pick your knit and it'll damage the fabric.
So that is why the needles are important. Types of needles, sizes of needles are important. One more thing I just want to mention, and we might not be able to see it, but I'm going to show it to you anyway. There are two sides to the needle.
So There's a flat side. If you can kind of see, the flat side has writing on it, and then there is a rounded side to the needle with no writing on it. The flat side of the needle always goes to the back of the machine on the commercial machines. I'll show you in another video how we will put in a needle into a machine in case you break a needle.
All right, have a great day. Bye!
