Plant Cell Structure and Function

Introduction

  • The aim is to label a diagram of a plant cell and describe the functions of its parts.
  • Unlike animal cells, plant cells can perform photosynthesis.

Key Differences between Plant and Animal Cells

  • Shape: Plant cells have a regular shape, unlike the flexible shape of animal cells.
  • Color: Plant cells contain green structures.

Common Structures in Plant and Animal Cells

  • Nucleus: Contains genetic material and controls cell activities.
  • Cytoplasm: Site of chemical reactions.
  • Cell Membrane: Regulates entry and exit of molecules.
  • Mitochondria: Site of aerobic respiration.
  • Ribosomes: Site of protein synthesis.

Unique Structures in Plant Cells

  1. Chloroplasts
    • Contain chlorophyll, the site of photosynthesis.
    • Key distinction as animal cells lack chloroplasts.
  2. Cell Wall
    • Made of cellulose, providing strength and structure.
    • Present in algae as well as higher plant life.
  3. Large Permanent Vacuole
    • Filled with cell sap, helps maintain cell shape.

Additional Notes

  • Algae, as a simple plant form, also possess cellulose cell walls.
  • Further study on photosynthesis will be covered in later lessons.
  • Study materials and revision workbooks are available for further practice.
