Cricothyrotomy Procedure

Overview

  • Cricothyrotomy is an emergency procedure to secure an airway.

Steps in the Procedure

1. Initial Positioning

  • Non-Dominant Hand
    • Holds the neck.
    • Palpates the landmarks necessary for incision.

2. Making the Incision

  • Number 10 Blade
    • Used to make a vertical incision.
  • Landmarks
    • Confirmed before making the incision.

3. Stab Incision

  • Performed using the Number 10 blade.
  • Technique similar to using a shoehorn.

4. Insertion of Bougie

  • A bougie is inserted into the incision.
  • Preloading
    • The bougie is preloaded with a 6.0 ET (Endotracheal) tube.

5. Placement of ET Tube

  • Once the ET tube is in place:
    • The bougie is removed.
    • The cuff of the ET tube is inflated to secure it in position.

Important Points

  • Ensure landmarks are clearly palpated and confirmed.
  • Be cautious with the incision to avoid unnecessary injury.
  • Properly inflate the cuff to maintain airway security.
