General Information

  • Time of Attendance: July 2023, during summer months. Expect hot and humid weather at King Hall.
  • Location: King Hall, an older building without AC. Bring or buy fans early.
  • Packing: Important to check the ODS packing list online. Consider buying items like a black backpack beforehand to save money.

Arrival and Initial Setup

  • Week Zero/One: Busy schedule; preparation can ease stress.
  • 24-Hour Time: Used frequently; practice if unfamiliar.
  • Arrival: Aim to arrive early (around 6-6:30 PM) before official check-in at 1800 (6 PM) to settle in and access resources like Davey Jones's Locker.

Week One Experiences

  • First Impressions: Initial stress and nerves; prep work helps.
  • Packing Essentials: Black backpack, PT shirts (due to shortage), and fans from Davey Jones's Locker.
  • Room Setup: No inspections until Thursday or Friday.
  • Initial Check-In: Reach by 1300 (1 PM) on Sunday; last chance to move alone.
  • Introduction to RDCs (Recruit Division Commanders): Chiefs and Senior Chiefs who have operational authority during ODS.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Student Leadership Roles: Opportunities to practice leadership by signing up for roles like DVO, ADO, Company Commander, etc.
    • Sign up only if prepared for additional work.
  • Drill Officer: Involves making mistakes publicly.

Administrative and Initial Training

  • Orientation: Initial admin tasks, medical paperwork, etc.
  • Medical Check: Blood draw and urine analysis within the first few days.
  • Uniform Purchases: Buy required items; expect to spend up to a couple thousand dollars.

Physical and Practical Training

  • Swim Test: 50-yard swim and tower jump.
  • Chow Hall Procedures: Detailed rules and conduct outlined in the ODR manual.
  • Room and Rack Setup: Specific requirements for bed and room arrangements.

Weekly Schedule Highlights
