Overview

Early Life

  • Born in Ireland to a pagan father (Damon) and a devout Christian mother.
  • At age 14, she consecrated herself to Christ and took a vow of chastity.
  • Following her mother's death, her father's mental health deteriorated.

Father's Proposal

  • Damon's counselors suggested he remarry to cope with his grief.
  • He sought a woman who resembled his late wife, but ultimately his advisors suggested marrying Dymphna.
  • Dymphna fled with her confessor, a priest named Gerebran, and a small group to Belgium.

Life in Belgium

  • They settled in Geel where Dymphna built a hospital for the poor and sick.
  • Damon discovered Dymphna's location and pursued her.
  • Captured her and the priest, Gerebran, and attempted to force Dymphna to return.

Martyrdom

  • Dymphna refused her father's advances, leading to Damon killing her at 15 years old.
  • Her remains were later collected and laid to rest by the townspeople.
  • She is recognized as a martyr and was given the title "Lily of Ireland."

Legacy

  • A church honoring St. Dymphna was built in Geel in 1349.
  • By 1480, it became a pilgrimage site for those suffering from mental illness.
  • The original church burned down in the 15th century, but a new church was consecrated in 1532.
  • Her shrine is known for numerous miracles.
  • National Shrine of St. Dymphna located at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Massillon, Ohio.
  • St. Dymphna's Special School is in Ballina, County Mayo, Ireland.

  • St. Dymphna is also a patroness against incest.
  • The priest, Gerebran, who aided her was canonized and his remains are in Xanten, Germany.
