Back to Basics: Installing and Configuring DDR4 RAM

Overview

  • Objective: Install DDR4 RAM in a motherboard and configure it properly.
  • Example Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming Wi-Fi.

DIMM Slots and Configuration

  • DIMM Slots: Dual Inline Memory Module slots.
    • Slots labeled as B1, B2, A1, and A2.
    • Common configuration: B2 and A2 (one channel), B1 and A1 (another channel).

Installation Steps

  1. Unlocking DIMM Slots:
    • Push the slots outward to unlock.
    • Typically involves B2 and A2 slots.
  2. Aligning and Inserting RAM:
    • Align the notch on the RAM module with the slot.
    • Insert the RAM carefully, ensuring it snaps into place.
    • Avoid forcing the RAM to prevent damage.

Special Configurations

  • Single Module:
    • Install in B2 slot.
  • Four Modules:
    • Ensure the modules match by date and lot code.
    • Distribute as: matching pairs in B2/A2 and B1/A1.

BIOS Configuration

  • Accessing BIOS: Press Delete or F2 key during boot.
  • Using XMP (Extreme Memory Profile):
    • Go to AI Tweaker in Advanced Mode
    • Select XMP profile (1 or 2)
    • Automatically sets the RAM frequency and timings.
    • Example: XMP DDR4 3603 MHz with CL 16-19-39-1.
  • Manual Settings: Access DRAM Timing Control to adjust timings if needed.
  • Command Rate: Can be left on Auto or manually set.
  • Save and Exit: Hit F10.

Troubleshooting

  • CMOS Battery Reset:
    • Turn off the power supply.
    • Remove CMOS battery and wait 30 seconds.
    • Reinsert battery and reset BIOS settings.

Verifying Installation

  • In Windows:
    • Open Task Manager -> Performance -> Memory.
    • Verify RAM speed and slot usage.
