Essential Gear for Runners and Training

[Music] oh [Music] all right what is going on everyone welcome to the video Welcome to episode 2 today is going to be a great video because along with taking you through my training for the day I'm also throughout this video going to be giving all of my top running gear recommendations everything from shoes to shorts tights shirts hats watches supplements everything so if you're just getting into running and you want running gear recommendations from someone who's been running for a few years now and has tried a lot of gear this video is definitely for you it's also for anyone who's been running for a while and just looking for different gear to try out and lastly it's Christmas season so if you're just looking to get a gift gift for a runner in your life this video is also for you but with that being said I'm going to go through from head to toe actually toe to head cuz I'm starting with my shoes all the gear I recommend and all the gear I've been actively using throughout my Marathon prep and all the things I really have been loving um but with that being said going to finish up this coffee and going to go knock out some miles for the day all right so the first two items that I recommend um are going to be running shoes and running socks arguably two of the most important pieces of gear we're going to talk about all day um running socks are super important you don't want to be wearing crappy socks with nice shoes that just shouldn't happen so the two types of socks that I wear are firstly the Nike unicorn socks I absolutely love these they're just they've got like patches of sponginess all around them and I just discovered these like two months ago and they've quickly like become my favorite socks um they're just like weird and unique looking but I'm telling you you have to try them they just like they're amazing they're perfect they're uh my favorite socks I also used the DSG ankle socks um these are just like typical like running sock from Dicks um but both of these are great socks I only use ankle socks because I don't want to mess around with getting blisters or anything um but yeah those are my sock recommendations now let's move on to shoes which is the most exciting thing to talk about for sure when I think of running shoes I think of two different categories you have your daily training shoes these are shoes that typically last longer they're a little bit cheaper they're more comfortable more durable and you're going to be using them for the majority of your running then you have your race day and speed workout shoes these are more expensive shoes they don't last quite as long they're lighter maybe not as comfortable so they're both of those categories first we'll start with the daily trainers I've tried a ton of different daily trainers and this is my current favorite rotation starting off with the new balance 1080s these are the version 13s I also have the version 14s I recommend both of them they're both extremely cushioned comfortable and durable shoes I literally can't recommend them higher um I've been loving them and they've been my go-to the last couple months here now um along with the New Balance 1080s I also recommend the Nike Invincible run 3s this is also another Max cushion very comfortable daily trainer that I've used for the past couple years they've been really tried true and yeah I love them and the last daily trainers I'll recommend for today are the New Balance SC Trainer version 3s another very comfortable shoe they also are pretty responsive because they have a plate in them uh I love using those specifically for my really long easy runs now let's move on to speed workout and race day shoes so the four shoes I recommend are the Adidas Boston 12 for one really good shoe to get speed workouts done in um then I recommend the New Balance SC Elite great shoe really comfortable really fast shoe and my two top dogs are the Nike vaporflies and the Nike Alpha flies two absolutely amazing shoes that I've raced in and I I love they're very expensive but they're amazing and you're going to want to fly when you put them on so those are all of my running shoe recommendations currently um and yeah you should definitely go try them out and see if they work for you all right today on the schedule I have eight miles so here's my pre-run FIT check on feet as I said New Balance 1080 version 13s um which brings us upward to my next recommendation which are running shorts and running tights these are crucial um just for comfortability on your run um I prefer running tights I've worn running shorts before but running tights have a have a side pocket that you can put your phone in and it doesn't like bounce around and so I just have preferred to wear running ties for the majority of my runs um so as as far as running tight recommendations go there are two different running tights that are in my opinion way Above the Rest the first being the Lululemon fast and free running tights they are the most comfortable and the best running tights on the market they are also the hardest to get your hands on they're never in stock um maybe you can find them on eBay I got lucky cuz they came in stock and I immediately bought them um but if you can get them they're next level like way better than any other running tights out there the second best in my opinion are the Walo half tights which are what I'm wearing right now they make a 6in version and an 8 in version depends on how much leg you want to show these are great they have a really solid phone pocket um really secure and yeah I mean running tights are just the goat but if you're looking for running shorts um Nike makes a really good 5-in trail short New Balance makes really good 5-in running shorts a lot of Brands make really good running shorts so honestly in my opinion just whatever brand you prefer try their running shorts and they're probably going to be great so those are my shorts and tight recommendation of the day all right now we'll go up um I have a new balance windbreaker but I'm actually going to be wearing this New Balance t-shirt and then I'm wearing an aloe hat which I'll talk more about later I'll talk about all this a little bit later um choros Pace Pro yeah different I've been wearing the pace 3 and this just came out so I'll talk about this later as well so stay tuned um but this is going to be my first run with this watch so that right there is a pre8 mile fit check not bad huh um but yeah we're going to go knock out some bils and I'll talk to you about some more recommendations in a second so one of the cool features of this new watch is the OLED screen so it looks very bright the old watch was kind of dim um so now you got that bright screen and to start your run you just start like that um but I'm already liking that screen that screen is pretty sick I feel uh I feel high class all right eight easy miles that's kind of the standard pretty much every day I run eight easy miles with the exception of a long run and a workout so that's what we're doing today let's [Music] get I've been searching for sense I've been searching for proof every dime that I find I have thrown in the Fountain Of You the Fountain of you I've been running through something I've been running on fumes I've been running for nothing and I am nothing without you without you hey how you do it's been a minute since I spoke to you look who you talking to you should boy you ain't got nothing to wo between the county lines in theway Street all right so running shirts that's my next article of clothing um honestly there are so many good brands that make so many good running shirts so as long as you have a really light moisture wicking and breathable shirt that's what I recommend all all I can do is recommend not using a full cotton shirt so yeah I mean new Balan Adidas Nike on they all make great running t-shirts uh my personal favorite is the Lululemon fast and free running t-shirt or running tank top but any of those are great options just make sure it's light breathable and moisture wicking ah feels so good to be back to this back to that structured training with a purpose um yeah it's just exciting I love marathon training in fact my younger brother is running his first marathon with me in the Mesa marathon and I'm helping coach him and get him ready and it's been getting me so pumped up and excited to see his excitement going into this training block his first marathon ever there's something to be said about sharing the joy of running with other people and not just keeping it to yourself at the end of the day part of why we run is for the community and how it brings people together so I'm having a great time sending my brother training schedule cuz it wasn't that long ago that I ran my first marathon and so I'm just taking what I've learned throughout my training giving it to him and it's given me this whole new energy and excitement about it so I'm really pumped to run Mesa with him it'll be his first marathon and your first first marathon you'll never forget it it's the most incredible feeling stepping over that finish line after putting in months of hard work so I'm back baby and I'm excited I talked about this in my last video but switching up your running routes is a really great way to keep running fresh marathon training can get very repetitive so if you run part of your run through a neighborhood part of it through a trail part of it next to a road just switch it up and it makes it more fun between the county lines in the oneway streets wo between contagious open my unbel never in a game of hide and seek you find me you find boom we got 8.41 miles at an 825 Pace took me an hour 10 minutes and 47 seconds I don't know why but that may have been the easiest 8mile run I've ever done like I'm barely breathing I'm not sweating that much and I feel like I could run eight more right now so that's a good sign I mean it was just easy pace and I know it was easy Pace cuz it was easy that felt great that's always oh man when you have runs that feel like that it just kind of like reinforces your Fitness level and so average heart rate was like 148 or so at an 825 page face feeling really really really smooth that's a really good sign I'm pretty happy with that so 8 Miles for the day done and uh yeah I'm hype about that hype okay the next piece of gear that I'm going to recommend are hats hats are super important uh for me specifically because I have long hair and like there I just can't run without a hat um so for me I have two hats that I highly recommend the first being the aloe hat you see me wearing this in most of my videos um but it's just like a an amazing perfect fitting hat I have really poofy hair so this hat really like stretches nicely and fits my head really well and it's just really lightweight so when you're looking for a running hat make sure it's light breathable and stretchy those are the three things and so I recommend the aloe performance hat I think it's called um and then also the CLA running hat the CLA running hat is probably the like hat I've ever worn um yeah it's is very flexible great running hat bpn has done a couple collaborations with CLA so you can get some bpn CLA hats those are the ones I wear personally um and you can also get them discounted you can use my code and you'll get them for a discounted price but those are the two hats I highly recommend lightweight stretchy breathable the real name of the game with training for marathons is like just getting used to high mileage every every day so right now like I was talking about earlier my daily mileage is literally no less than 8 Miles so on Monday I have an 8 Mile Run Tuesday 8 Mile Run Wednesday at least 8 miles but sometimes more and it's a workout Thursday 8 Mile Run Friday 8 Mile Run Saturday long run and it's just getting used to Big miles and doing that over and over if you can get used to that you're going to be golden and if you can keep yourself injury free um that's just that that's all it takes is really just like that dedication to the boring and if you can be committed and disciplined you'll find success months down the road during your race it'll pay off but it doesn't feel like it's paying off for a while because you get in this cycle of like just boring miles after boring miles um but trust me just trust the process seriously it will pay off and you'll be glad that you stayed committed uh for sure [Music] all right just pulled up to the park going to get an 8 mile run in again today um but I wanted to talk about my next piece of gear I recommend these are called beats Power Beats they are the greatest running headphones in my opinion um like I said I tried the airpods but they like would always slip out of my ear so I found that these are the best cuz obviously they have that ear hook right there but yeah I listen to music probably on half of my runs maybe a little more sometimes um I just think music is a really great way to kind of get your mind right get your mind in the zone and just make running more fun sometimes there's nothing better in my mind than like throwing on like some Han Zimmer or like a cinematic soundtrack as you're running makes you feel like you're in a movie um I absolutely love that feeling so yeah I definitely recommend listening to music um I wouldn't say do it on all your runs like don't become dependent on music um in fact like most of my long runs and speed workouts I'm not listening to music just so I'm really like focused and like really in tune with how I'm feeling and my Paces my breathing um but I do think it can be a great tool to use use throughout your training um just to make it a little more fun and more enjoyable so I'm going to go knock out an 8 Mile come back and then we're going to talk about watches all right my Running Fit of the day got the New Balance 1080 version 14s on that I've got the Lululemon half tights on running t-shirt and then going more hat and then the choros pace Pro I'm also trying out this arm uh heart rate monitor I've never tried it before so that's not going to be on my recommendation for the day um but I'll let you know if I like it so let's do this all right just wrapped up an 8 Mile easy run felt really good I did that at an 826 Pace it's just a beautiful day I'm here chilling at the park now I love this place um but I wanted to talk about running watches running watches are an extremely important piece of running gear um and there's just so many options out there like so many different watches it's crazy so hopefully this will help kind of narrow down some of those options um but the running watches I could not recommend higher I'll recommend them till the day I die are the choros watches specifically the choros pace series um and there's a few different reasons why I think they're just the greatest watches ever but my first running watch Ever Was the coral Space 2 and I absolutely loved it um but then the coral Space 3 came out and I ended up getting that and if you watch my videos you know that this right here is the watch that I've done literally every single run in over the past 2 years and it's been a super reliable amazing watch and the reason I recommend the pace watches are for a few reasons number one the price uh it's like $200 something doll which if you look at all the other watches out there that are similar quality they are much more expensive so the price is very affordable for such a great watch it's also extremely lightweight I think it's the lightest if not one of the lightest um running watches on the market which you can really tell when you put it on your wrist it's just nice to not have something like big and bulky on your wrist just something really light that you forget you're even wearing um it's extremely accurate the GPS is extremely accurate it's been tested a lot um by a lot of different people um and it's just been proven to be very accurate um I also love the choros app that goes along with this thing so after you run you're able to really like look at the data of your run and it's just like the layout is really good and helpful information and then of course the other thing that is amazing about this watch is just the battery life this thing lasts forever uh I mean it's been like a week and a half and it's still at 60% so you don't really have to worry about this thing running out of battery I've never had it run out of battery or even really come close um so those are all the reasons I love the choros um there are a lot of great watches out there of course but I just know that these are amazing reliable watches I actually just got the pace Pro um it's a little bit too early for me to like recommend it but after two runs with it it is an amazing watch it's got the OLED screen really bright screen it's very quick it's a little bit bigger but still a great watch so if you're looking at running watches try out the core Pace model um it will not let you down I promise also I told you I'd talk about this little arm uh heart rate monitor I don't think I did it right so it actually like wasn't on that whole run so I can't give you an actual review on the thing but it looked kind of cool not going to lie um but yeah those are my running watch recommendations so it's time for lunch I'm super hungry um but I wanted to take this time to talk about supplements although it's not technically running gear I'm just throwing it in there anyways um but the most important thing like when you're running all these miles is to like make sure you're eating enough so the majority of my diet and the things I eat on a daily basis are eggs fruit yogurt chicken rice ground beef um pasta things like that that makes up the majority of what I eat occasionally Chipotle will make its way into the mixx Cava might make its way into the mix and then on the weekends I might go get some pizza or a burger but 80% of what I eat looks like this so that is the most important aspect of your nutrition but especially as a runner it can be very helpful to supplement with different things um the supplements I personally take that I really enjoy and really help me in my running performance would be go bars um sometimes if I'm not that hungry in the morning I'll have a go bar before my rung go gels are Absol Ely crucial especially for long runs um they're easily inestable and easily digestable and they taste really good so go bars go gels I also love electrolytes um g1m sport which is electrolytes and carbs um I take a multivitamin a strong Omega and greens and reds so those are my main supplements um that I take and they're really helpful and really beneficial um for my training block if you want to try any of those supplements yourself you can use my code and get a discount um I highly recommend bpn products they just make the best supplements in my opinion all right to wrap up the video I want to give my three honorable mentions and they're honestly only honorable mentions cuz I forgot about them until now there's so much running gear out there like there's so much I like couldn't think of everything but I have three things that I forgot number one a Thea gun mini this thing is absolutely amazing to have especially for traveling it's really small but it does the job a lot of people ask me me what I do for recovery and honestly I don't do that much like my number one priority is sleep sleep nutrition and hydration are going to be the greatest things for your recovery as a runner but along with that it can be helpful to kind of have a massage gun and work out your muscles especially because they get really really tight the more you run so having a theun mini has been super helpful for me um number two you may have seen me using those nasal strips um I'm not going to act like I know the science behind it and if it actually works but for me what it does is expand my nostrils when I'm running and it makes me feel like I'm breathing in more air so if you kind of have like a deviated septum or one of your nostrils doesn't breathe quite as well try out some nasal strips they might help you the ones I use are from Numa Numa nasal strips they sent them to me but you can honestly just get any nasal strips from like CVS or just over the counter and then my last recommendation is a handheld water bottle specifically the Nathan soft flask that in my opinion is the greatest handheld water bottle um mostly because as you sip it it drinks and size and other water bottles are just like a firm set size and so even when you're finished drinking it you still have to like hold it and it's still like big and bulky but the Nathan soft flask as you drink it it gets smaller and smaller and smaller and then once you're done with your drink you can just like Palm it and it's not like annoying to carry the rest of your run um anyways so those are all of my recommendations if I missed anything or if you have a recommendation drop it in the comments below um let me know what your favorite running gear is whether it's shoes shirts watches anything anything drop it in the comments below I love reading through all the comments and responding to as many of you as I can if you enjoyed the video drop a like uh make sure subscribed as well um but that wraps up another 52 53 mile week we are steadily building in the next few weeks should be closer to 70 m a week so we're in it now and I'm excited and I'm thankful for all of you um supporting me and following the journey so with that being said I will see you all in episode 3
